    This was a great review/test! It's VERY important to understand what these wonderful little amps can do and just as importantly, what they cannot do. My Fosi TB10D in my office does a fantastic job at powering my Wharfedale D310 small-ish bookshelf speakers. I think I'm getting pretty much all they can do. What's most impressive, and important to me, is that they sound really great at low volume listening, which is what I do at work. The volume does break up at really loud volume levels but I'm never listening at volume levels that hurt my ears. Super happy with this little Fosi amp, however, I understand its limitations. For $60, I'm overjoyed with the the TB10D. I'm excited about bringing in the V3 to compare. It's just that the TB10D sounds soo good, the itch to try the V3 with this system is just not there. Seriously, that's how good the TB10D is!!!!! (Using a Marantz NR-1403 as my pre-amp).

    A great comparison and helpful head-to-head. I wish the SMSL had pre-outs to use as pre-amp for a power amp to get the processing, but I think you mentioned that already. I was always a Yamaha amp/receiver in the past, but I have grown to love Pioneer Elite and Marantz separates, so no updates right now. Thanks fir your time, efforts, and sharing this with us all. Sorry about the fallen soldier. I hope you are able to resurrect him.

    Hey Randy. Great vid. One question. I totally get why for the purpose of comparison you’d run all three amps “flat”. I’d love to know your impressions of the three when you dial them in a bit more to find the sweet spot in each for your taste. For instance, if you roll the bass of a notch or two on the T9, did some of the wooly bass calm down and did things open up a bit? Sounds like all 3 are great value and it really comes down to what works for the listener from all the standpoints - budget, size, speaker pairing etc.

    I have the A-S301 paired with Klipsch RP 600Ms (first gen) and it's a great combo. The slightly scooped mids of the RP 600s with the more forward mids of the Yamaha works very well.

    Just received the RSL iA2551. I'm not an "audiophile". Music lover for over 50 years though. This thing sounds great to me. Very quiet.
    I learned quickly not to switch the frequency toggle under power. Horrific noise if you do. It will disable the toggle if you do this. Power cycle gets back to normal.
    It's like many welding machines. DO NOT SWITCH UNDER LOAD.

    I own the SMSL DA9 thanks to this channel. I was interested since I live in Shenzhen China for the last 10 years. I also bought the Topping e50 DAC and I really love the pair with some 20 years old used Energy C6s I found here. I am curious if this AL200 is any kind of an upgrade to my DA9? I like the sound stage of the DA9 but at the upper end of my listening level preference I find it breaks up a bit so I am trying to find an affordable power upgrade whilst keeping the sound stage and sound quality as the DA9 is a baseline for me. Would never want to go below this. Love you content!

    Randy, my Yamaha CA 1000 (vintage mid '70s) has a variable loudness control and for those naysayers who doubt you are wrong. This is how I use my Yamaha. Right on. Folks he's telling the truth. Nice video.

    • @eddents
      @eddents Год назад +1

      Perhaps Yamaha's design is to open the lungs of the amp, so to speak, then the listener dials it back down through attenuation (loudness control)? Perhaps the designers desired the A/B status of amplification to be in play at all times and this is why they instruct to crank the volume up and then dampen back down the listening level via attenuation. This gives a more robust signal to add more impact at lower listening levels?

    Great Video Randy! Hey, I’m happy that I’ve kept my Yamaha 801 in the stable. We’re you ever going to review the Audiolab 6000a? It’s a popular 60w option. Keep up the content you’re on fire this week!

    • @GaMeR11sHoT

      I could get the Yamaha A-S801 or Audiolab 6000A Play at around roughly the same price. Would you still recommend the A-S801 still? I plan to pair them with the KEF Q150 but it's not set in stone. I heared the KEF's need a powerful amp to sound their best and I'm afraid the Audiolab would fall a little short in that regard.

    • @4thewinir344
      @4thewinir344 Год назад +1

      @@GaMeR11sHoT The Audiolab may fall short with your KEF if you play at loud volumes. The Audiolab’s design has larger power reserves in high quality capacitance, making it sound authoritative with high dynamic range music. The Yamaha will have more power available for louder listening, but you’ll have to crank it to unleash its potential unless you tinker with the tone controls. I guess what I’m saying is the quality of the watt is important, and it’s higher in the Audiolab-but you have no tone adjustments if you don’t like it. The Yamaha’s tone adjustments and loudness will allow you endless possibilities and the 100w is always on tap. I’d go 801 if space is not a concern and you are OK with tone adjustments. Both have their advantages and my Audiolab is currently paired with my Klipsch RP600M which are higher sensitivity. I don’t need the power and can appreciate the quality of the watts. Hope this helps!

    Randy! I need your advice regarding speaker placement/setup….so later this year I will be moving into an apartment and will need to move my system into a different arrangement. Currently I have a set of Cerwin Vega towers in my A channel of my silver face Pioneer from the 70s and I have the Emotiva B1+s in the B channel. The Vegas are furthest from the listener while the Emotivas are closest. In my apartment I’ll have a pretty standard setup, couch on one wall and TV/Entertainment stand on the opposite. My question is, which speakers should I use and where should I put them? I know this is a loaded question. I figured the Vegas would be good beside the entertainment stand being they’re bigger and have a more “full” low end, but I just can’t seem to not use the Emotivas! I don’t even know how I could run all four, if it were possible. I appreciate the feedback and your time! Thanks!

    Would be great if you could compare the a300 also from smsl that uses the same chip as the al200. It's an amplifier only but has sw output, high pass filter and the monoblock option. (so maybe you coud try 2 😀) Also, you could test the new aiyima dac-a1. Really cheap dac/preamp/hp amp/bluetooth receiver with a remote that could be a great option to pair with all the good 3255 amplifier options that don't have a remote. (and also maybe a good cheap alternative to the smsl su-1) Keep up the good work Randy!

    I seem to recall another BS 41 owner having a similar or the same issue I don’t remember what the details were but whatever it was, he fixed it and it wasn’t a big deal. I would unscrew the black plate and see if you can figure out what happened; If you’re handy with tools and a soldering iron, it may not be so terrible.👨🏻
    Edit: make sure you let us know if you killed the woofer or something, and how much power you were running or whatever.. I’ve been running those with 100W per channel AB amp, sometimes pretty loud, and I haven’t had any issues “yet.”Edit2: OK I just finally saw the second half of this video. I think that you’re pretty sure you blew the woofer, so I guess the next question would be what is your honest assessment as to why; anyway, I think they were rated if I’m not mistaken at only 80 watts, but I don’t know if that’s RMS or program, and obviously speakers always handle a little more than what they’re rated at but not sure what what kind of a low end power are you were actually putting into those things when you blew it, or for how long.

  • @joelcarson4602
    @joelcarson4602 Год назад +3

    Running an amplifier into clipping can definitely kill speakers, once the waveform clips, it starts generating all sorts of hash and spurious noise, one of the things that can do that is bass transients that suck the power supply dry at high volume levels. The harmonics can reach into the treble and beyond. Harmonic distortion suddenly becomes immense as the signal clips the amp. Something to watch for even with a higher voltage power brick.

    • @mattholland315
      @mattholland315 11 месяцев назад

      A clipping amp is putting DC out which heats drive unit coils QUICK. Some class d amps quickly ramp up THD to 10% or more way before their “max” rated outputs.

      I can highly recommend both of those. I have them and run with a series of different amps. Yamaha a4a for home theater system, and a few different Fosi amps in my secondary music room. I am waiting for my Cayin MT-45MK3 to show up and see how that goes. As for bluetooth, I would highly recommend getting a cheap streamer and bypass the bluetooth if you can. i have tried the audiocast M5 for about $40 and it is fine. Way better than bluetooth, and accepts most music platforms direct. The WIIM pro for a bit more money is even better, and with an additional phono stage can cover the whole thing for not a lot of money. If you are on a tight budget to start I suggest looking at the low price class D amps to start out. It gets your system off the ground at a low price. And sounds great.

    The Yamaha is a mainstream, 'old school' amp and lovely with it. I wonder how similarly priced, entry level so called 'audiophile' amps such as the Cambridge AXA 35 and the NAD C316 BEE V2 would compare to the Yamaha; from your sound description, I'd say they'd be closer in sound to the SMSL amp you tested.

  • @sepg5084

    Just bought an Aiyima T9 Pro, paired them with Sony SSCS5. The right speaker plug sockets are kinda "loose" even if it is properly screwed down and does not really feel loose, but a bit of movement causes signal to be cut. It has a very very slight buzz in that right speaker, which can be heard if you place your head 1 foot from the speaker at 50% volume. I tried swapping the right and left speakers and cables and it still won't go away. Maybe it is caused by the "loose" socket.
    It also gets warm to the touch at 50% volume after an hour of listening, though not enough to trigger "limp mode".
    Not disappointed since i only paid $125 for it, though not 100% happy because of that right speaker plug socket issue. Maybe i'd upgrade to a $500 Denon in the future when i feel like it.

    For Yamaha, is the A-S301 @60 watts better than the R-S202 @ 100 watts? I question the quality of the output of the cheaper 202 despite the higher rating.

      They seem to have listened because the brand-new SMSL AO-300 (not A-300 or AO-200) has the same chipsets as the AL-200 and a subwoofer output plus a dedicated headphone amp chipset.

    I Have A Yamaha A-S501 Integrated Amplifier, Technics SL-1900 Direct Drive Turntable and Klipsch K9 three way Speakers. My question is : Ever since I bought the Yamaha Amplifier and hooked it up… The sound is flat. I’ve had this Amplifier Since 2020. Is there anyway I can boost up the power or something to have more Definition in sound. I previously had a Marantz Receiver 2230. I know there’s no comparison to vintage but is there anyway to improve my sound. Thank you.

    Shame we lost a brother 😢. The T9 pro probably gets hotter to the touch due to the valve (tube) heaters more than from the output devices?

  • @shiva_MMIV
    @shiva_MMIV Год назад +5

    The Yamaha 60W are at a 0.19% distorsion, which is VERY conservative. At 10%, the rate most cheap amps use, probably gives more than 200W. Since I still use a lot of analog inputs the Yamaha will be my choice if I decided to retire my Onkyo (which also is lower rated but offers more real power compared to chi-fi amps).

    • @shiva_MMIV
      @shiva_MMIV Год назад

      @@francescotenti193 Yeah, the small cheap amps are good if your connectivity requeriments are low, in fact I use one with a pair of compact speakers in my TV instead of a soundbar, but once things start to get complicated and you need to add a phono preamp, an input switch and a headphone amp it's better to go back to the classics and use a big integrated amp instead ;-)

    I have a Yamaha AS301 and it is a good value for the money. I prefer its musical sound over most of the Class D Integrated amps I have heard. In my house i can only turn it up about 1/3 of the way max. It is a 60 watt per channel unit. I think 20 watts would be more than enough.

    To my ears, the Aiyima is well-suited for near-field and low-to-mid SPL applications and with smallish loudspeakers also meant for such operation. That's OK because I have big amps and big speakers for filling a big room. The SMSL could be a sort of bridge amp, pretty good at both. But then, my big amps and big speakers sound really good playing softly; they're just too physically bulky for near-field use.

    Would love to know your thoughts on amps between about 1000-2000. Seems like there is a lot less innovation in this space than the sub 1000 space where all these Chinese companies are putting out amazing stuff. The 1000-2000 range seems to add features and build quality but not necessarily power or fidelity. No exactly cheapaudioman territory, but not super expensive in the realm of audio.

    In order to really judge their hifi chops these low price amps should also be compared via their analog inputs, fed by a superior DAC. A Deafrips perhaps. It's a messy issue, mixing cheap components and premium ones but as Randy says, "the Ares II is magical."
    Maybe a sub channel. The not so cheap audioman. I have a hunch these sub $200 amps can deliver really great hifi so that if one thinks you might upgrade eventually then you can upgrade the amp last. DAC first, and speakers second.

    Whenever you make these comparisons of “cheap” audio amps and receivers…it makes me wonder WHY you never compare them to the Sony STR DH190? Yes, it’s a couple years old, but it can still be had for around $150 is a basic unit, but loaded with a lot of features, drives 2 speaker systems easily, with 100 watts per channel, Bluetooth, HI Def, accepts turntable etc. And here’s the best part: it sounds really good! Still a bargain. (I saw it on sale for $99 a couple weeks ago) I’m not complaining, your reviews are excellent, but I’m asking for a comparison and value judgment. I bought my Sony on your recommendation. To fill in while my old Mac had to go in the shop….and does it sound better than a 40 year old MAC? No. But it is shockingly close.
