  • Today I look at alternatives to 3 of the most iconic watches ever made. The conditions are simple. They must NOT be homages and have their own style from brands I respect to deliver a quality alternative. With the aviation classic Breitling Navitimer, I recommend the Seiko Flighmaster and the Hamilton X-Patrol. Also worth a mention here is the Citizen Nighthawk, Promaster Sky and the Sinn 903. For the racing classic Omega Speedmaster, I recommend the Swatch Irony and the Oris Artix. Also worth checking out is the Tissot V8. And finally for the iconic Rolex Submariner my choices are the Tudor Submariners and the Tudor Pelagos. What are you favourite alternatives?

@@theurbangentry do you think it is worth it to save money to buy a Tudor since it doesnt have as much history or reputation as other brands, and it practically a copy on design of Rolex, with even some of the same exterior parts?

Tudor watches is a Swiss manufacturer of high-quality wristwatches based in Geneva. Registered in 1926 at the request of Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex SA, it was positioned as a more affordable alternative. Today the brand remains a sister company to the parent company Rolex, both of which are owned by the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation.

Re the Omega Speedmaster: Have you come across the Bulova moonwatch? OK, it's a quartz movement, but it's an in-house movement and a million times more accurate than the Omega speedy. It comes with a carbon-fibre look strap, and also a fabric strap with leather trim. I believe the one-off watch on which it was based sold recently for about $1,600,000.

Another great watch, alternative to the Rolex Submariner, is the Casio Duro Marlin (MDV106-1A), it costs about $40.00 - $65.00 in Amazon and it has his own unique style, is 200m water resistant with a screw-down crown, screw-lock back, 44mm wide, date display, unidirectional bezel.
Great video by the way, as always. Keep up the great work.

My personal recommendation for those on a budget around $50 are the Vostok Amphibia for a true military diver. I chose the 120512 and it has been great. For a pilot/chronograph, I went with the Casio mtp4500. Both are 40mm black dials with no dates like real tool watches. The nice thing about a slide rule is that you can turn it into a tachymetre like the speedmaster has by rotating the 36 on the outer scale over the number of seconds you measured with the chronograph on the inner scale. The speed then can be read next to the 10 on the inner scale. For example if you timed 45 seconds you would line up 36 over 45 and then read 80 next to the 10. This gives you the same functionality of a tachymeter. Thanks for the video TGV!

that blue pelagos! mmmmmmmm. I was checking one out at the mall and I love it. The fact you can pick it up for half the price of the subby and get in titanium is fantastic. Plus the clasp is genius how it stretches as you move

My personal recommendations are watches that I have around the $50 range for ultimate bang per buck. For a real military diver that has seen action, the Vostok Amphibia. I chose the timeless space dial version 120512. For a pilot/chrono I chose the Casio MTP4500 which is a 12 hour chronograph with a slide rule. Both watches are strict 40mm black dial tool watches with no dates. If you need a tachymeter for speed calculation like the speedmaster, you can use the slide rule. Just take 36 on the outer scale and line it up with the seconds you measured on the inner scale. Now you can read the speed on the outer scale next to 10 on the inner scale. For example, lets say you measured 45 seconds between mile markers in your car. You line up 36 with 45 and read 80 next to 10 which means you went 80 mph. It is a nice backup if your speedometer is broken or want to check if it is right. Thanks for the video TGV!

Something I've mentioned before, that's irritated me before were the like/dislike ratio for TGV's videos. I always thought there were too many dislikes (sometimes around 10%). Thoroughly Enjoy Your videos! Thanks so much for your attention to details! I own several of your alternatives. I have several Seikos and Citizens which are in my opinion very high quality and affordable timepieces. One Particular Timepiece I love is the Bulova Lunar Pilot! Citizen now owns Bulova and this Timepiece has a “Tri-Tuning Fork Movement” operating at 262 kHz a very accurate Movement. This watch has an excellent History being a Replica of Bulova’s Special designed watch to operate in Space. During the 1971 Apollo 15 Mission The Crystal fell out of the NASA Issued Omega Speedmaster and Astronaut David Scott put on his specially designed and engineered for Space Bulova Lunar (which he had as a Backup). He completed the mission with the Bulova. The Original sold at auction for $1,600,000.00 in 2015. This new Watch Movement has the UHF Quartz Movement which operates at a frequency 8 times more than the average quartz movement with an accuracy of approximately 10 seconds per year. The watch is large, however very comfortable. It also comes with two straps, leather and a NATO Strap. Like the Omega, it has a Beautiful black dial with white hands making it very legible! This watch is very affordable and is a very high quality Timepiece!

Here's a lesson for all people who think "Fake", "Replica" watches are for losers. I have a real Rolex Two Tone DateJust. I'm on my fourth crystal because they made it in plastic and it always looks scratched in between changes. The gold in the Jubilee bracelet has stretched so the band sags when held horizontally. I have a Breitling Two Tone Chronomat that will not wind enough to keep time. The "Bullet" bracelet clasp won't stay closed if the slightest pressure is applied while wearing it. I have a Breitling Aerospace Emergency watch that Breitling won't even change the batteries for less than $500 which includes cleaning.
I have a 1974 Seiko Self Winding Chronomat Day Date that starts working the very second I pick it up, will continue working all through the day and long after I take it off. All the features work and it's never been cleaned. It probably cost $150 and hasn't cost me a dime more for more than 42 years.
I look at my expensive "Original" watches and I feel ill. With the quality of today's replicas, I would never consider buying another "Real" one. If they look great and tell time.....

I wouldn't generalize, but we ARE taking about Seiko here. If anything, the most enduring and desirable trait of a Seiko is the robustness and reliability of its movement. From experience, Seikos don't need servicing for at least a decade compared to my watches with Swiss movements. My Swiss watches have a 3 to 5 year service interval, depending on make and a trip to the service center can easily cost more than a brand new mid-range Seiko with a 6R15 movement. But such is the cost of owning a luxury watch -- the operative word being 'luxury'.
Most replicas use cheap Chinese movements that imitate ETA movements and their reliability is highly questionable. Homage watches, or pieces with distinctly similar designs, with quality Japanese or Swiss movements are an entirely different thing.

My Seiko Orange Knight is approaching 10-years of regular wear and it is absolutely flawless. I love the Rolex Sea Dweller and the Submariner, but I am not sure I could ever make the jump to a watch that is around 20-times the price. Like most people with dive watches, I don't dive...still, I can beat the crap out of a watch like no one else. Seiko's just keep on going...

    • @JB91710
      @JB91710 8 лет назад

Michael Martin InTime has a special on the Deep Sea black and blue Sea Dwellers for $308 with a Asian 2836. They are V5 which I have heard is better that V7. If you wear it out in 4 years, throw it away and buy another. It will be cheaper than servicing the real watch.

***** Be careful, your ignorance is showing. Keep in mind, when you open your mouth and say stupid, you are showing the world your level of intelligence..
I couldn't care less what anybody thinks about me, period, let alone what watch I'm wearing. I happen to have worked very hard in my life and own a two tone Rolex, a two tone Breitling and a Breitling Aerospace Emergency. I also know from this experience what a rip off these companies are. I have Seiko's that are more reliable and have never needed service. Change the battery on a Seiko, $15. On the Aerospace, $500. I have my Breitling Chronomat in for service at the moment because it stopped self winding. The bill? $1,100. I am so going to make my next purchase the watch I described previously as it will Tell Time, look great to ME and if it breaks, I can just admire it's beauty and buy another one, maybe even a different model, for a fraction of maintaining a real one.

    My personal thoughts-
•That Swatch looks sharp for a Swatch.
•Really dig the red bar on the left of the dial on that Oris in place of a third sub-seconds dial, very unique.
•To me, "Affordable" is anything $500 or less. Anything above that to me is more mid-range, and anything over like $750 is high-end. I know there are watches that go for tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars. But I'm using an average, blue collar worker type brain here. I'd have to save for easily an entire year, without buying any other watches, just to get myself a used Seamaster or Speedmaster.

A which is the real thing, is the Seiko 5, produced since more than fifty years, many versions and a good, automatic, mechanical watch way below $500. And here is the brand i wanted to mention: Pulsar, a Seiko-Brand, very nice watches, many versions an even cheaper than the Seiko 5. I' m the proud owner of Seiko 5. I think a good Rolex Submariner alternative is the Sinn EZM3. It's 40mm, just over 12mm thick, sapphire crystal, bead-blasted case, 500m water resistance, and an ETA 2824-2 movement. Plus Sinn technologies like an Argon filled case and a Copper Sulphate dehumidification capsule. Sells new for right at $2k on a stainless bracelet. I think it's a lot of watch for the money.
Don't often see them used though, and for $2k you could just as easily pick up a used Omega Seamaster 300m diver too.

Dear TGV, great Video indeed,as always.
Personally the SKX, as good as it is, for me it is not really an alternative for the sub. Regarding Seiko I would put the Shogun and the Marinemaster on the list. Especially the Marinemaster is a stunner and you get a high value for money.
For the Navitimer I also like this watch a lot, but it is out of my price range. The Hamilton X-Patrol is an interesting choice, I also discovered this watch and it is now on my list for a certain time. After your Video, I will have a closer look now since a Chrono Flighty is still missing in my collection.
Wish you all the best. Greetings from Shanghai.

    Hi TGV,
    Greetings from England!
I do enjoy your vids, my only small gripe is the lack of TAG's reviewed. I appreciate that you can only review what you can get your hands on, and also that you did say in the past you had a somewhat sniffy attitude to the brand, but that changed when you got your GMT. Hopefully that will inspire you to look again. I have an Aquagraph 500m, an F1 Kirium and an old Aquaracer as a beater watch for everyday, and I love them.

May I suggest a budget non-homage alternative for the Omega Speedmaster is the "Casio 2328". It is very affordable, usually under 100 USD. The Casio has a Japanese quartz movement and is of course cased in China. It has a water resistance of 100m.

Another cool alternative to the Submariner is a Seiko again and a SKX again...
But is the Seiko SKX031! It looks nice and it's a cheaper option than Tudor.

Skx009 is now an official hipster watch. I've run into 6 people at a Starbucks with this watch.
It's unusual that omegas don't keep their resell value especially the iconic speedmaster. That Oris does look beautiful. Thanks for recommending.

The Urban Gentry 1) protest in Santa Monica, ca...a man with a sign wearing one. 2 and 3) right next to a Starbucks in Burbank, ca farmer's market one buying organic eggs (idk) another selling sage. 4) Montebello, ca starbucks guy with full-on laptop "I'm going to be here for hours" type. 5) coffee bean northridge mall reading a New Yorker...in CA. 6) China town, Ca during Chinese New Year. Photographer with an amazing 35mm vintage camera.
Skx007 is iconic but just by size alone you can tell the difference between the 007 and 009 plus the position of the crown at 4 o'clock. There were more occasions, however these 6 were litterly within 4 months of each other.

I am a Fortis, Oris and Tissot fan. While none of these can be called "high-end" timepieces, I like them, they keep good time and they can last generations as all timepieces can with proper care. I think that's all that matters is that the owner & wearer likes them and takes care of them. Right?

I had been looking at $500 homages to the submariner--after watching the vid and doing some research I pulled the trigger on the Hamilton Khaki Navy Scuba. Great video. I used to own a 1995 Omega Seamaster Quartz 2221.80 and miss it every day, but as an alternative to the Speedmaster, I would like to suggest the Tissot V8 Chronograph T36.1.316.72. I have had mine since 2003 and it is a tank! Beautifully made, polished stainless steel, Swiss movement, the face has an "old school" look to it, can be picked up for around the $200 range. I have mine on a leather NATO strap. Perhaps not an alternative to the Rolex, but a Seamaster on a budget, I love my Seiko 5 Sea Urchin on the Spectre NATO strap. Looks beautiful, and at a bit of a distance can easily pass for a Rolex or Omega. That said, I count down the days until I can get another Seamaster. Cheers!

As an alternative to the Tudor Ranger and Rolex Explorer, I like the Seiko SARG009. TGV just unboxed one (a SARG011 which is essentially the same) so I'm sure a review is on the way. It has that field watch aesthetic and is a nice solid watch but it isn't a copy of anything- it definitely has it's own style/design. I had a little trouble with the 6R15 movement but I got that sorted and now I love it. At ten percent of the cost of Rangers/Explorers you can't go wrong.

I Can't believe that someone LOVES WATCHES as much as I do. Since I was a little fellow have always had eyes on the finer things in life,(when it comes to watches) contrary to that mind set that belief - still with me, however, we all struggle in life no matter how some puddle along and we all can still come home smelling of high heaven no matter what we do, buses driver, carpenter, personal assistant, bartender, share trader, to a sweep cleaner even the brick layer doesn't matter they all have a WATCH on their wrist. From time to time you could see the wonder of all of them asking themselves, "What time is it"? That is one of the many things I would notice as that little chap, "The WATCH" was always worn with extreme love no matter the person or the WATCH, no matter what they did in life. As I grew up, you tend to actually pay more attention to the minutes of your day, with every sweep of the hand shake of a friendship I'd look at the TIME. your channel I've subscribed keep on ticking...

Hello sir, I am a big fan of your videos. I would like to mention 2 more watches that are nice alternatives in my opinion, but for a much lower price. Longines Hydroconquest Automatic for the Sub and Tissot V8 (Quartz) for the Speedmaster. A racing and a diver watch, pretty similar looking to the originals. Both respectable brands with their own identity and not trying to copy. Swiss made with all the same main features, maybe you don't agree, but thats just my 2 cents. I actually own both by myself because of these reasons and I am very happy with them!
    Cheers!

Jaragar Navitimer which is pretty close to the Breitling B01 with a domed glass, circular slide rule and display caseback with automatic movement and three working dials (day, date, 24hr) £16, Eaglemoss NASA chronograph missing the Omega logo and rotating bezel but aesthetically the same thing £9 and I am re-markedly impressed with the Chinese Military Royale which is an automatic and looks quite good for the pocket friendly price of £13.88 for the subbie looks. If I need a diver I go for the pro being the Vostok Amphibia, tested to destruction at 800m during a staged submarine rescue, its rated 200m is good enuff for me.

The SNA411 and X-Patrol I agree with you on. The Swatch Irony is a cool watch, but you missed the boat by ignoring the Bulova Lunar Pilot. The Oris Artix seems OK, but over priced. Something in the 1K range would be better, like a Tissot PRS516 or something... The SKX made sense, though I prefer the Citizen Promaster, but the Tudor was a ridiculous idea. Its way to expensive. The Oris Aquis is a much better watch for the price point. My recomendations/agreements give us a watch arround $250 and another at about $1,000 for all 3...

The Borealis Estoril. 300m Diver. Takes small design cues from the very early 60's Omega Seamaster. However, it is its own thing, and here's the thing! I have a Rolex Sub, It's nice, the bezel is smooth, but the Estoril! OMG! It is the coolest most beautiful watch. No date Sapphire , Miyota movement, accurate. The Bezel...Have to say...the best I have ever encountered. Smooth, no play at all. better than my Rolex Sub..seriously, this is my go to watch when I just want a 40mm classic and original design. Looks fantastic on a mesh but comes with a very nice Nato. It's about £300. Best bang for buck I have ever had, and I am serious collector, in other words, I have watch disease :) The lesser known boutique watches offer amazing value and superb movements and really must be included in the round if true value for money is going to be shared with your fellow subscribers. PS Love the channel .
