He was playing in constant and severe pain during this stage of his career due to a degenerative back disorder. Whatever the moronic, ignorant bottom feeders have said on this thread, that takes a lot of guts, which Athers had more than anyone.
He and Alec Stewart deserved the success they had late in their careers with England (I'm thinking of this series win, the 2-1 win in Sri Lanka and the regaining of the Wisden Trophy in 2000) for all the hard knocks they suffered early in their Test careers.
people whining about how slow it was should appreciate the fact that his innings was the platform of a test and series winning victory. this sort of innings is so much more valuable that a mindless afridi style 30 off 15 then hole out.
What seems not to be widely known is that towards the end of his career while batting he suffered a hell of a lot of pain from a serious, chronic back problem. So a brave innings as well as a damn professional one. Detractors and lovers of sloggers, please note.
i remember this inns jee he batted for ages for 120 odd it was a very concentrating and battling inns. too bad for athers he had to come up against the likes of mcgrath and warnie otherwise he would have been englands greatest ever batsman
The amount of runs he scored pits Atherton up there with England's best ever batsman. Unlike the likes of KP he didnt have an ego and would definitly have retired England's highest ever run scorer had his dodgy back not finished him at the relivitly young age of 33. Athers is an England legend.
We could use a player that focused these days. I'd like to see a video of his big century in SA though - I have a hazy memory of him getting something like 185 to save a test accompanied by Jack Russell. Very unsure as to details
It's called being an opener. Atherton really didn't have the greatest squad to captain during his tenure and it was commonly though by the opposition at the time that if you get Athers then the team will collapse. Not Athertons fault he was an excellent and brave opener, even the Aussis named him the Cockroach because he was so difficult to stamp out.
He sure had guts. And lovely to see a man make a ton and acknowledge it with some dignity - not something you see too often these days.
Look how David Warner carries on. Total wanker.
Indeed - so much courage and made the very most of the ability he had. Good bloke is Athers.

love Michael Atherton,
He was amazing throughout the test series and England won it 1-0 . (2 test drawn)
M. ATHERTON BATTING LEGEND 🌹🌺

579 balls for 125!!!!!!!!, now that is slow. Great innings though
No. He took 430 balls to score 125. 579 was the minutes he took to score this.

Was this the test match that finished in the dark because of Pakistan's delaying tactics?
The start of this vid is what we call in the trade, smelling the leather, always preferable to eating the leather.

best momment for him in pakistan where england end pakistan unbeat run
Quite right. People should watch Athers (and I say athers as opposed to England quite deliberately) vs Donald.
england won this test genius.
wow
Even Boycott woulda done it from 400 balls!
Atherton averaged a paltry 29.68 in 33 Tests against Australia. In his final 16 Ashes Tests, the average plummeted to 19.35 as Glenn McGrath ran amok.
125 frm 500 odd balls WTH was he sleeping
a blocker
it was a very SLOW innings.
