England v Pakistan, 3rd Test, Karachi, December 2000

  • The famous 'Win in the Dark'. Requested by myjkyz87.
    The azaan had already sounded, and the sun had sunk far beneath the Karachi horizon, when Graham Thorpe played the chinese cut off Saqlain Mushtaq, triggering mass jubilation from England's cricketers, not to mention the small knot of fans - all 12 of them - who had clung on in the fast-fading light.
    It had been an astonishing sprint to the finish, in a series that England - under the emotional, attritional leadership of Nasser Hussain - had paced to perfection. With the side in a transitional phase after the serial failures of the 1990s, Hussain's mantra was "stay in the contest at all costs". He realised that, before England could learn how to win, they first had to learn how to not lose.
    Consequently the series was a drudge for 14 days out of 15. Thorpe epitomised England's approach with a century in Lahore, which contained just two boundaries, but their refusal to buckle put the pressure back on the hosts. On the final morning in Karachi they capitulated, losing their last seven wickets for 80, leaving England needing 176 to win in a minimum of 44 overs.

    Here after the devastating news of Graham Thorpe’s death this morning. He was such a great player under pressure and his 50 in the second innings was the reason why we won the game and the series. RIP Thorpey

  • @gerarddugdill3411
    @gerarddugdill3411 3 года назад +5

    No doubt, my favourite test match ever. I sneaked out of the office - I was the joint "boss" after all - at about 10.30 on a Monday morning to find a pub that was open down London Bridge. I thought I''ll sneak in for a quiet pint, there'll be no-one there and It'll be Ok. Think it was queens something in the next alley down from the George. I couldn't get in the door, never mind get served, cos of the suits that were doing the same and were all "popping in for a sneaky one". What a win. Players going mental, everyone in pub going nuts. So funny as Pakistan had gone so slow to play for time with England batting last, but it didn't matter cos as long as the batsmen didn't complain, the umpires wouldn't take them off. First time loss for Pakistan in Karachi, first time England winning in Pakistan maybe ever; camera caught fat English in empty stand as after Thorpe and co came screaming off; bloke just stood there with a mad English face, thinking, you can play in the dark, you can make me drink Coke, you can have the best spinner (Saqlan) you can prove unbeaten. Well, that's all gone, we've won now!

    Pakistan's unbeaten record of 45 years in Karachi was broken 😂

      Not broken...sold off! The match was drying in to a bore draw, but a dramatic collapse on a dead wicket handed England an incredibly unlikely series win over Pakistan in subcontinent.

    To lose a test match after being 292/3 on the close of day 1,happens once in a thousand times.

      Who knows may be match fixing!
      And very poor thinking by the coach, Javed Miandad & Moin Khan.

      Fix test match! Pakistan 292-3 on day 1, then start 5th day in hefty position and suffer dramatic collapse on flat track offering bowlers nothing.
