Zakaria Zainal I have long and much thought, why LKY and Dr Goh didn't want to nationalize SPF Gurkhas or their descendants. Neutrality may be the key consideration. Once they are allowed to sink the family root here, or to further extend their own future, they might emotionally take side due to whatever might happened, or any hijacked situatiion.

It is extremely appalling and disturbing how Gurkha's offspring and families are being treated in Singapore. And this is coming from a Singaporean. For decades, the Singapore government systemically segregated the Gurkha's community and attempt to minimise their contact with Singaporean public. Gurkha and their families are deported to Nepal when they completed their services or when they can no longer serve. I have several Nepalese friends who's father is a Gurkha. They are true blue Singaporeans, born and grew up here, went to local schools, polytechnics and they all had Singaporean accent. Their distinguished fathers put their lives on the line, serve and protected Singapore's institutions . But all had their birth certificates doctored - stating that they are born in JB, Malaysia - they are all born at KK hospital. They are put on perpetual special visas and their rights to live, study and work in Singapore are terminated and deported back to Nepal when their fathers retires from the Gurkha contingent. In short, their offsprings are left stateless. Many fell into depression and developed mental illness when they are deported back to Nepal - for some this is too much to bear and committed suicides. This is not the way to treat the Gurkha - why are we doctoring Gurkha's offspring birth certificates and not offering them a pathway to citizenship if their sons are more than happy to serve national service? Many are overachievers and excel academically. And because they cannot adapt to life in Nepal, their families emptied their lifelong savings to send their kids to Australia, hoping that somehow they can earn and find a pathway to Australian residency. This is their true story - so screw this romantic Singaporean view on the Gurkha - they deserve much than better! Human tragedies - why don't you photograph this instead and truly commemorate and honour the Gurkhas!

what's the rationale behind identifying them by numbers? If you found their name too long, why not just their photo alone?
