Just looking for a stove to buy and come across your channel, only clocked who you were like a minute in. Thank you for the review, I'm considering buying this :) take care mate
Nice that you ran across this video, Becky! Yes, these little stoves are great. They don't weigh very much, they pack down very small, and they work very well. MSR now makes a "Pocket Rocket Deluxe" model which has a pressure regulator and a piezo igniter. The igniter is great, but I'm not sure if the pressure regulator really matters much. The Deluxe model weighs a tiny bit more than the Pocket Rocket 2 (about the weight of coin). I actually bought the Deluxe stove this past spring and have been using it for a while. I need to make a review video for it as well. MSR makes some great gear. I've owned an MSR white gas stove for 22 years now, and have been quite happy with it. If you are looking for a little "ultra lightweight" cook system, getting just the Pocket Rocket stove, and then a small titanium pot/mug would probably be a bit lighter than the aluminium pot that comes with this cookset. Happy stove shopping mate! -Gareth
Thanks! Yeah, it's too bad that it's no longer spring bird singing season anymore. (I actually made a couple of "videos"...more like audio videos...this spring with dawn bird songs, and some owl hooting) The Pocket Rocket 2 is a nice little stove, that's had to go wrong with getting one.
Couldn't agree more!...i use my Pocket rocket for backpacking trips...or sometimes on a day hike when its to dry or windy for building fires.................Dang good job on the review Garret...atb...woods
thanks for the good review. i have been debating picking this pot set up (already have the pocket rocket 2) but I don't think its really necessary for me because I already have the windburner set which is more efficient and doesn't really offer anything more other than being SLIGHTLY smaller.
Thanks, I'm glad you found it useful! I hear you about the efficiency factor.....late next month I'm planning a little backpacking trip up into the mountains in what ought to be fairly winter-like conditions. I think that I'll bring this MSR cookset with me, if for no other reason than the fact that I haven't taken it with me on a full-blown wilderness trek. Meanwhile part of me knows that my old 14-year-old Jetboil would certainly be more efficient, and would heat at least twice the amount of water! Yeah, so how important is having a somewhat smaller cookset most of the time?
One thing I dislike about the pocket rocket 2 is that with a small pot its not full supported by the arms. You need a wider diameter pot with that stove, roughly 4 1/2- 5" wide for the pot to fully sit on the 3 arms
Yeah, a wider pot definitely has a broader, fully supported stance on the stove....especially compared to the little mini pot that come with this cookset.
I bought this set and couldnt wait to get it. Kinda bummed though i think ems sold me a lemon?? I got it home and noticed right away there was a few chips out of the pot itself..? Not too big a deal they may have showed it off in store? My complaint with my particular stove is when i screw it on to the fuel canister it sprays severe?? I thought it may be just the little msr cans fault? I always make sure the valve is turned off when i screw it on aswell but it still happens. I'm not talking just a little either it sprays pretty bad until i get it tight. I noticed with yours it doesnt do that? I upgraded from a brs stove and i used to buy the fuel cans you have here in your video and i never got spray with that setup. The brs is a great canister stove especially for the money. Did i get a lemon? Is it just the msr canisters? Really bummed about it especially for $80! I should have probably taken it back first day i purchased it! Oh well thats life i guess. It does boil water fast as far as that goes. Be careful screwing the msr rocket 2 on your msr canisters i will say that. My original pocket rocket never had this problem either. Thanks for the review! Hike on!!
Wow, it does sound like something might be wrong with your stove. Does the o-ring at the bottom look intact? That would be my only guess as to why it leaks so much when screwing it on. Then again, maybe MSR canisters have a touchier valve that doesn't take much to open, whereas with other canisters you have to screw it on further before they open and start releasing fuel? I'm not sure what might be going on, but those are my guesses. I do wonder if EMS sold you a display model...I'd think that it would take a lot of banging around in order to actually chip the pot. Glad you liked the video!
The set is sold as one retailer puts it: "A complete cook-and-eat solution for solo backpackers..." Well, yes, if all you want to do is cook with boiling water. The pot is too small to do a very good job of warming larger MRE meal component pouches. You can cook eggs....if you want to boil them. The set works great for coffee and tea. I used the set a few weeks ago in the mountains to heat water for a freeze dried meal. This definitely is not a set to use for most cooking tasks! It's just a small pot with a canister gas stove. However, you certainly can use the stove with other cookware to cook a wide variety of foods. I think that it is a good setup if you want something compact and light, and all you need to do is heat water or very simple foods like soup. That said, I'm sure that a Jetboil-type stove is able to heat water a bit more efficiently in most outdoor conditions, although it is a bit bigger when packed.

Thanks..mellow vibes..chilled out pidgeon/dove. Oh, and no brainer to just add a small frying pan to that set up.
title is cook set and you say it's great to boil water; is this good for cooking or not ? warm up MRE, coffee, eggs , tea, etc

If you can boil water with it, you can cook with it. Duh!
