    "What about Mr. Sheldrake?" "We'll send him a fruitcake every Christmas." The genius of Billy Wilder understood, "I love you," would not have the impact of the fruitcake line. It goes beyond love. It's a lifetime commitment. Perfect ending.

      Right up there with the last lines of *Some Like it Hot*, or *The Lady Eve*, or*The Professionals*... sheer genius.

      It's good but I think the last line in caddyshack is more powerful and moving.

    I saw this movie for the first time a couple weeks ago. It happened to come on a humble broadcast TV channel, and I fell for Shirley MacLaine in about four seconds. What's sweet about this final scene for Baxter is that at last he can say how he feels. What's sweet about it for Miss Kubelik is that she has just walked away from a relationship where she was weak and is now in one where she's holding all the cards.

    • @pjrosello
      @pjrosello 8 лет назад +1

      +Jerry Walsh No, Baxter is the one holding the cards. Ant he alternative end is with her getting pregnant and kicking Baxter away. But this was a Hollywood movie and we need happy endings, right?

    The champagne bottle popping like a gun going off is so genius. You experience shock and confusion and then seeing the spewing champagne bottle you immediately feel comfort and humour. Arguably the main tones of this movie. This is such a good movie.

    Billy Wilder made Sunset Blvd, Some Like It Hot, Double Indemnity, Stalag 17 and this masterpiece among many other classic fllms. Shirley MacLaine and Jack Lemmon are simply magnficent. Both early in their careers they were nominated but overlooked for the Oscar. Seen today a mistake...in career's of fine acting nothing they did topped their work here in The Apartment.
    Bravo to Wilder, MacMurray, Lemmon and MacLaine

    Jack Lemmon was truly an under appreciated actor of his time, even though he made such classic movies. I want a guy to look at me the way that he looks at Shirley MacLaine near the end :)

    "I love you Miss Kubelik, did you hear what I said ?" :I simply adore you Miss Kubelik "
    She smiles at him,.. then "Shut up & deal" adorable & very sweet. Love this film since my Mom introduced me to it, but always liked Jack Lemmon. He portrays in most of his movies the good guy everyman that is often overlooked. He is one of my favorite everyman, the other is Jimmy Stewart.

    There isn't a purer moment in any film anywhere than the shot at :32 when MacLaine realizes who she really loves; she's transcendent, and she flies right to the ending she and Lemmon richly deserve. I watch only this much of the film and "I'm fine all over." OK, I'll shut up and deal now.

    As cinema, this, like the ending of *The Age Of innocence*, or the casting of the great bell of Kiev in *Andrei Rublev* or the Indian attack in *Stagecoach*, or the fight between John Wayne and Victor McLaglen, in *The Quiet Man* or Henry Jones' testimony in *Vertigo* , or the battle in the rain in *Seven Samurai* or Ali's entrance in *Lawrence of Arabia* or the assassination of Don Fanucci in *Godfather 2*, or the 'harem" sequence in 8 and a Half, is the work of a God. One can admire; one cannot hope to surpass or even equal.

      There is no way she fancied him, but i'll bet from this scene on they were the closest of friends. And it shows that you can have the strength to leave a bad relationship if you have a true friend ready to catch you.

    • @steph13326ify
      @steph13326ify 6 лет назад +2

      Actually, the beauty of the ending, is that we don't know if he got out of the friendzone. Interestingly, its the same way in Billy Wilder's Some Like it Hot, but Jack Lemmon is Fran and Joe E Brown is C.C. We don't know if love will blossom between the characters, and we don't have to know, because its a beautiful ending nonetheless.

      You don't abandon the person that you felt that you were in love with. In order to dash all the way to the apartment of another man that you still consider friendzone material. Miss Kubelik sought to be loved and Baxter genuinely offered his love to her. At the end, Baxter did get out of the friendzone.
