- Mayor Muriel Bowser, Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice Kevin Donahue, Metropolitan Police Department Chief Cathy Lanier, and Director of the Department of Consumer of Regulatory Affairs Melinda Bolling announced proposed changes to the training requirements for all commissioned special police officers (SPOs) in the District.
I believe the public should know the authority of the SPO's..... I think these properties along with the company and district govt. should do more to educate the public on who they really are, the responsibilities and consequences involved when dealing with an SPO. The public obviously doesn't know that they are commissioned police, and have the same powers on a specific property. Make those tenants aware that breaking the law on property in the presence of an SPO is the same as an MPD officer and are subject to arrest. There should also be some level of accountability for these companies, there are too many. Most are running a terrible SPO program, while leaving their officers unequipped with the proper utensils to do the job effectively.
some of the points you raise are correct. Special police officers have the full and complete authority of metropolitan police officers. And in other ways, they lack some of the basic tools to do their job. For example, due to their authority, special police officers should be able to write tickets to vehicles and have them towed. Unfortunately, MPD does not allow that, and instead, one of their units has to be taken out of service to have that happened. SPOs are an amazing asset and do an excellent job, but there are some agencies, like archangel, that give the rest a bad name
How did that training work out?

This woman is one of the problems with this city. I would trust a three year old blind toddler to run the city over her any day.
