Guys some of you might think this is cool but it isn't cool at all. These kids don't ask for money they come with an intention to rob, so let's share and let others know. It gets extremely bad in the summer, especially in Batumi and Tbilisi. My female friend lost $500, a passport, and things of sentimental value when they robbed her. I have seen how these kids operates and it is very bad

Well they are not Georgians .. they are Roma people … the best way to avoid them is not make any eye contact and not show any kindness .. they have no birth certificates or id,s so it’s difficult for police to locate them.

Thanks for sharing your experience. It mirrors the unfortunate experiences of others and should NOT be censored. We (travellers) fully support those in need, and we don't deserve violence/assault. It's unfortunate, but sometimes, it's the safest alternative to keep them from robbing/assaulting you. They are trained to do this. Period. Nonetheless, it's important to bring awareness of reality. So, thanks for sharing the good and bad. It helps others. Peace and love!

    • @RJinspire

Thank you brother for helping to highlight what we face as travellers. There's a big difference between asking for money and robbing tourists intentionally as thee kids are trained for that and they do turn violent at times. I don't make these kind of videos but when a friend of mine gets assaulted, robbed of $500, passport etc then I will make such a video to warn others; robbery is robbery and there's no other way of sugarcoating it👍

Tell your niece to avoid entertaining any kids approaching her and asking for money, they are normally backed up by a group of many kids and the parents usually pick the victim. They came and tried to hug me and then all of together were holding me from my leg and putting their hands in my pockets to grad cell phone, wallet and other belongings. I had to use all the pressure to push them and then run away. This happened in the evening with several people around. My taxi driver ( Georgian guy) informed that these are gypsy people in Georgia. The police in Georgia needs to check this immediately else tourists won’t visit this place. Guys trust me this is very dangerous and a unique kind of way where in kids try to rob you in this manner.

These people seem to be pariahs all over Europe and now even Central Asia too. I don't really get it as they're pretty assimilated in North America, or at least you never see sh*t like this in Canadian or American cities. The cities in Georgia look beautiful; it's too bad there are people like this there ruining it for everyone. Big problem in cities in Europe as well. It seems these children are confident nothing bad will happen to them no matter what they do, even physically assaulting people to get their money; in the past most people wouldn't have hesitated to hit or kick them, so the fear of pain was generally a good enough deterrent. I had a co-worker in China, a big American guy, who said that he routinely pushed aggressive beggars away, even children, sometimes hard enough to make them fall over. I thought that was a bit extreme, but they really can be unbearable, physically blocking your path or surrounding you. Once they know a certain person won't put up with it, word goes around and they all leave him alone, because the chance at getting money is not worth getting hurt.

The same type of kids are in Istanbul. Some months ago, before the quake, an older kid walked up to a lady who had taken out a money note to pay a vendor. The kid tried to snatch the money from the side approach & amazingly, the lady was quick enough to move her hand up from the snatch. Wow. Very fast reflex. Usually in Istanbul, the kids just walk around & sneak into malls (but are chased out by security guards), but that one example, I saw one of them actually try to snatch money.

Yes; I've never been to South America but have heard this kind of thing isn't a big problem in all countries. It doesn't seem to have that much to do with levels of poverty or homelessness, but with culture. I lived in China for four years and there are a lot of beggars there, including children, but you never saw anything like this level of aggression.I got robbed only once (wallet stolen by a pickpocket on a bus) the whole time I was there. I traveled in Xinjiang, one of the poorest parts of China, and the people were lovely: kind, dignified, and gracious. The kids would come up and say hello to us, but we never got the sense they were just trying to get something out of us or possibly rob us. They were just curious and friendly.

Don't hit kids! There is a very good method (I learned it in the Balkans, and then again in Russia, it works everywhere against gypsy beggars). You just need to swear at them in the most rude way. The gypsies perceive this as dangerous sorcery and run away. What words to say - ask the Georgians, Armenians or Russians. Local gypsies will understand all options :)

As georgian, I can tell you that people think that you have money because they see that you are a tourist (We can tell because black people aren't usually georgian residents) and tourists mostly have a lot of money, but crime rate of course depends on place for example, in the most overcrowded places crime rate is pretty high so tourists better avoid those places and it is just better in any way to visit undercrowded places of Georgia (The places with nature and old architecture are at the same time safe and beutiful).

Exact thing happened to me on 2nd Dec on Freedom Square near Spar Market (I guess the location is the same as in the video). 2-3 kids are the same as in the video as well.
They came out of nowhere and two of them clinged to my leg. I was holding in to my wallet as I realised they might do something. Whereas the other 2-3 kids tried to snatch my wife's purse. And in the process my wife stumbled and I rushed to pick her up, and in that very instant one of the kids took out my wallet from my back pocket and then stood behind another girl and took out the entire money and then threw the wallet and ran away. I called the police and reported everything to them and they told me these are gypsy kids and it's a problem for them as well since they do not have any address and don't know where they live and above all kids under 14 cannot be punished by the law, but they will try their best to help us.
Please be careful if you visit Georgia. Whatever you hear about the country can be different as well.

Well, the fact that kids under 14 can't be punished by law is obviously what's causing the problem. Here in Canada children under 12 can't be arrested or charged, but if they commit criminal offences, their parents can be charged, and the consequences are serious. We have no child beggars or crooks in Canadian cities, or gangs using children to commit their dirty work for them, because the law just doesn't tolerate it; if children are found living on the streets they go into the foster care system and their parents are charged with neglect.

The police are always there and these kids are so brave they will rob people in front of the police because they know there's no juvenile facilities in Georgia. They are lawless, please watch your pockets and your bags if you plan on visiting Georgia. Try walking with a bottle of cold water so you can spray water at them, it does help

The kids doing this aren't Georgian kids. They're foreigner kids who have no documents. Because of this, the police don't do anything since even if they catch the kids they don't have any paperwork so they can't really do that much. What this also means is that they don't really care what you do to the kids. If you want to get aggressive to defend your property they won't do anything about that either.
This also happens to Georgian natives by the way, men and women. You need to be careful of these kids near the touristy areas, especially tavisuplebis moedani and also in/near the metros. Just keep an eye on the kids when you're out especially the foreign ones. Don't put your phone or wallet somewhere where they can easily grab it. Use zipper/button pockets and try to use pockets on the inside of your coat instead of on the outside.

Happened to me hours ago. It was my last few hours in Georgia after 4 days of a wonderful trip.
The location is the same as this. Right in front of freedom square. They tried their best to snatch my wallet but luckily my jeans were tight and they could not reach it. They tried for some time and gave up. My wife was scared and crying the whole time. She was literally kicking them off me like a guardian angel. I was scared to harm them as they were kids. It was in the middle of the christmas crowd. there were a 100 people watching. Not one thing person raised a voice or stepped forward to help. That was kinda sad.
And yes, i am brown skinned.

A commenter in the video said the kids in this video are Armenian kids. Do you think he meant Roma (Gypsy) kids from Armenia? Other commenters have said they're Gypsies. I followed a Romanian RUclipsr for a few years. He said that they are a huge problem in Romania, and Romanians in particular despise them because they constantly get confused with them (many of his followers jokingly called him a "Gypsy" even though they knew he wasn't). Native Romanians are not Gypsies and are nothing like them. I don't know why Gypsies call themselves Roma, but they have for a long time and I guess that's just become the politically correct term for them. They actually originate from India.
