Good to see Victoria active again and nursing her knee, and you’ve encouraged me to take a tarp' on our 3-dayer up the Travers tomorrow. Tents can be a bit confining, if not claustrophobic, and Victoria's cooking tips were great.

I finally relented a few years ago to poles and find they really help plus very good for poles for the fly.

I've seen a whole chicken cooked on the BBQ with the BBQ lid over it using a can of beer. You drink half the beer, then shove the can with half the beer in it up the bottom of the chook & cook it. This keeps the chook sitting upright with arms and legs lol. Thought this would be right up your ally with the can of beer & been something a bit different. You may wish to coat the chicken with oil first and season with spices etc. Maybe you could find a way to cook in your billy over an open fire or sit on a frying pan over the fire and putting the billy upside down over the top. There are youtube videos on this also. Good luck, cant wait to see how you cook the chook 🙂

They are called weka. They are a native species to New Zealand. They cannot fly but they are rapidly taking over the ecosystem. They seem to have no fear of anything. I don’t really like them. New Zealand also has a bird called Kiwi which is somewhat similar but far more endangered. Have yet to see a kiwi but I hear then calling out sometimes.
