3ds Max 2024 is out! and is one of the biggest updates that I remember. We have improvements in modeling, animation, UI, materials, performance, rendering, color management, and more!
The star of this new version is provably the new boolean modifier, that has been turbo charged, will work when the old booleans will fail, multiple modes, and workflows to accelerate your boolean game. Even a VDB boolean has been implemented!
We have also improvements on array with a new philotaxis metode, and other improvements.
The internal triangulation system has been improved to work better in difficult situations, and improvements on material ID modifier.
On animation we have a new list controller and improvements in CAT.
We have a new modifier list based on QT, its faster than ever, and a new search filter, its easier to found the modifier you are looking for.
A new material editor has been introduced, totally based on QT, its snappier than before, allow for color customization, different areas has been enhanced, and now is possible to do compounds from your maps, an dock the material editor.
A new material switcher has been introduced.
A new color management system affects lots of different areas in 3dsmax, from color picking, importing or exporting images, viewport, rendering etc...
And not to forget improvements in maxscript, USD, Arnold and even more!

This is the response to blender development... That's why I think open source software should always be there so they remains competitive because until blender was not there, Autodesk was just sleeping.
Not everything is about Blender. This feature was on the to do list since many many years ago.
@@changsooeun whatever helps you sleep at night bro.
@@changsooeun poor Blenderinos still fool themselves into thinking Blender is a threat to any PRO software LMAO
I agree absolutely we need competition. Should it be "free" and open source? I disagree. There should just be competition, and blender shouldnt be free, it think it has subscription now. Yeah, cause that dought gotta come from somwhere, those commie ideas can only go so far.
Thanks for this summary! 👍Very helpful! Can't wait to try it out!
So glad to see non-destructive booleans in 3ds Max now, so cool!
It's all thanks to the pressure masterxeon1001 put on the industry 😂
@@jamy6431 absolutely said and so true, shoutout to boxcutter
I mean, you did have non-destructive booleans before, it just usually destroyed 3ds max stability :D
@@MajomHus yeah, the hard-ops suite brought so much attention to blender and it's capacity for booleans that everyone else needed to step their game up and this looks so good, what I'm most surprised is that in those operations I didnt see any artifacts or shading issues.
@@jamy6431 booleans are a hit and miss with every software. Some models I had to try 3ds, blender and houdini to get a good result. Hopefully this will eliminate the need for that :)
Thanks Blender for making this happen. I would also love some new features, not just updated old ones.
This is the most accurate comment I've read- Blender is making everyone move forward to stay relevant

Oh my goodness! So much cool stuff. Docking the material editor. My life starts anew!
Wow amazing. You made my day. Didn't see any notifications yet in the autodesk apps..just waiting for it 👏👏👏👍 these updates are gonna really make a huge impact in workflows..wow
Greetings Eloi. Thank you for the good news and intro to the new features! I'm installing the new version. Just last week I upgraded from my perpetual licence 2016 to 2023 and now even more new features! I have a lot to catch up on!
perpetual license can still update?
@@lawrencepun2483 Hi Lawrence. The 2016 version of 3DS Max was the last edition that was released before updated releases went on a subscription basis. If you have 2016, you can use it indefinitely. More recent versions have to paid monthly or yearly. Unfortunately there is no support for 2016. It has some bugs and of course does not have all the new features that more recent versions have. That’s the reason I went with the 2023 subscription which was recently upgraded to 2024. All updates for the subscription model are included at no additional cost. I love it. It’s so much better than 2016.
Solid update. Thank you for your videos Eloi ! Keep going !
This is a pretty cool update. The material editor does seems impressive.
Thanks for the overview! Very helpful!
Awesome update! These are all excellent and needed improvements but I especially love that the animation system in Max is getting some attention. Great presentation as always Eloi!
Awesome!,Thanks again for the updates!🙏
Nice. Keep the updates coming😎
thank you for the breakdown Eloi!
Finally material editor 2.0!!! Thank you for this video! Still hope to see some new modeling nodes!
The improvements in the material editor are excellent, it would be good if comments could be added to a group of selected nodes for better organization.
Like small notes. Yeah. That would help to organize it better.
Agreed! make sure to add this on the max ideas section. On this update the heavy lifting has been done (porting everything to QT) but I belive/hope, that more updates now will come.
like nuke
That new boolean workflow looks great.
Lots of fantastic improvements across the board! Good job!
I'm not even half way trough the video and have to say DAMN! That's an awesome update!
I can see some of these improvements have been standard feature in blender for few years already. Competition is good for healthy pressure on devs to make new features in their software.
Yes specially from open-source softwares. Otherwise corporates just shake hands to target their own niche, c4d for motion graphics, max for modelling, Maya for character and everybody just don't hinder other's space. Don't care about the users problem and what can be improved and added with every new release.
It's not pressure on devs, it's pressure on Autodesk head. The devs always want to do the better software, but businessmen forbid them to make good software. The bosses only want enough done to make the money enter their accounts.
This is the first time I've been excited for an update, the booleans especially!!
Amazing update!
This was a very nice improvement, especially the booleans
Very nice UI changes, good to see them using QT more and more in very useful places. 5:48 That material editor theme looks more modern, but I see they still haven't thought of a better way to change values than have that half-empty sidebar which I forgot it was there back in the old editor days.
I lost a bit track of 3D advancements in Max (and even blender wich is the program I use, bc I already have most of my needs covered), good to see people using max have their experience improved.
Thanks Eloi, the new version looks nice.
I'm here, like every year, thanks Eloi...
I've been playing with the new booleans for hours, its so cool.
Now these are nice updates!
Lots of very polished tools !
Very Informative. Thanks for sharing your review.
The new material editor has so much potencial!
Now it's good, last one was very outdated comparing it to other softwares
Been wanting compounds and the ability to save them for a long time - love it.
@@SanOcelotl Have you used Maya Hypershade?
@X D Grow up. Blender just very recently got proper PBR materials - years after evry other 3D program.
Toxic blender cultists are the worst of all the fanbois - proven by almost every one of their comments. I know many people that would like to learn Blender, but see how toxic and arrogant their user base and communities are and are just like - "no thanks". Don't blame them.
@X D Ok, I might be thinking of an Eevee add-on. Here's my point. For what I do, Blender doesn't cut it. Blender doesn't have Tyflow, Cycles doesn't have the material and rendering features of Corona, Blender doesn't have maxscript, it doesn't have the same levels of retopology tools, its smart extrude isn't as good - and various other modelling tools - don't get me wrong, Blender has some great tools, and I admit I am not expert with it, but for me, and having used Max for years and know it very well, despite some of its shortcomings, it's what I need, and I can do things with it that just aren't possible in Blender.
Every software has its strengths and shortcomings. There is one difference though ... you won't see fanbois for max, maya, C4D or whatever running to all the Blender channels to try to sh!t and troll all over them. You won't see the toxicity and arrogance in the user base and in the communities. Why? I don't know but I'd chalk it up to some sort of maturity that is perhaps gained from working at pro studios or being able to afford your own software, perhaps. Other than that I have no good explanation.
I have heard of people actually quit learning blender because they can't take the arrogant toxicity of it user groups. You don't see that anywhere else in the world.
I won't paint all Blender users with that brush, many of you do that job quite well enough on your own. Just read through this comment thread and you can easily see my point.
Hence ... grow up.
thanks you are the first who give information.
Powerful new features, thnx! 👍👍👍
Great new update ! Wow 🥰
This is a solid release! My favorite new features are the boolean modifier, and the long overdue animation updates.
Amazing Updates.
I believe there are more things to add with soon to release patches... 2024.1 --- 2024.5 with more modifiers and improvement in like cloth and viewport... They opened VDB doors... so that's a great news. Late but great! Your news video is always a popcorn time! Thank you Eloi!
Till last year they only gave updates till 2023.3; has there been any statement from autodesk about 5 patches? cuz that would be great!!!
@@MrQuantumCodes no statement... just a way to say.
@@FXPearStudio oh alright... but you got me super excited right there...
@@MrQuantumCodes I was writing a rant and decide to rewrite with a positive view, but can be read also as "For a full new release, I was expecting more big news than 2 modifies (array?! come on...)" And what's up with "2024 version" if we are now in April of 2023! Marketing & Dev are hand-in-hand here. :)
WoW! Awesome!
Thanx Eloi
I was dissapointed when I reviewed the oficial release notes and then I saw your video and I am super exited.
cool update!!! this is very serious tools...
Way better presentation of new features than what Autodesk did on official channel. This is how it is done.
Yeah seriously it's the same with Sir Wade's video on Maya updates - on Autodesk's video people were complaining that Maya got very few updates, but his video showed that actually this is a pretty big update. Same with this video.
nice review :)
About time STL import improved. Now I just hope they fix their FBX exporter
Awesome stuff
impressive!) thank you)
Awesome!
Been waiting for more robust booleans since 1998 ;-)
Only took them like 20 years
Thanks to boxcutter (blender hard surface addon) that pushed this game otherwise it will still not happened 😭😭😭
@@rajendrameena150 ah yes, a paid addon is what pressured a multi-millionaire company into implementing something lol
Great video Eloi, I think this is a solid release, specially considering this is only the first release of updates of the year.
At the end of the video, those shaders that seem to detect shapes are OSL or what its that?
thats the new distance shader in arnold 7.2
@@andvfx Nice, didn't know about that, thank you!
I would love to see an Ocean Shader added to max so Arnold can leverage it. All of the tutorials for Arnold Oceans are for Maya because it has a native ocean shader.
But I love these optimization updates. The biggest issues we have are always about max performance. I hope these updates come to the UV Editor someday, as it's straight up broken and terrible :(
Wow that new boolean modifier has my mind spinning
One of the best updates, opens up even more procedural workflows. Congratulations to the Max team! Looking forward to future improvements on the animation front.
@@gnom_anonim 🤣🤣🤣
@@gnom_anonim Autodesk updates 3ds Max only as needed by its architecture users. They haven't added anything to animation for 10 years, just minor improvements. No one writes about animation or rig plugin. We don't even have a ready face rig. We don't have an easy rig system either. CAT hasn't received any updates other than bug fixes for 10 years. And for 3ds max, autodesk doesn't make a single tutorial series. See the Pluralsight skillshare max tutorials on both Udemi and Lynda, all in the field of architecture. You won't find a single decent start after human animation tutorial. He shamelessly calls himself an animation program. There really is no training in animation as in maya. The fact that it is only used for architectural visualization and modeling all over the world does not change just because a few old users did some good vfx work. Frankly, I haven't seen any progress in 8 years. You keep saying TYFLOW, it's not part of the program. If particle flow was developed like tyflow, we would say that autodesk has developed. As they don't even get comments on the official 3ds max RUclips channel. They don't even tell about their new features. I'm sure they left the program to die. If you want to use Autodesk, switch to Maya. I don't think the blender is enough. With hundreds of plugins, it only comes to a max level.
There is so many new cool features
Bravo!
Wonderful
It's amazing !
Improved material editor - finally!
that filter for the modifier stack and faster slate editor 😍
that distance/sine wave shader used on the visuals at the end of the vid - does that shader come with max 2024?
Yes, is a shader for arnold
Hello, thank you
When do they put a tool that makes the body radiate?
Material switcher....nice 🙌
Importing a 16m tris .stl model into Blender only took 9s on my ryzen 2700x , you were probably using the old legacy stl importer, the new c++ based importer for Blender is the fastest stl importer of any 3d software I tried so far.
I tested with 3.2.1 it was slower.
@@changsooeun The new C++ stl importer for Blender was released last year in Blender 3.3
@@TopmotionsFilms I checked with 3.5. Max is still a little bit faster or close. But, Max importer has AutoSmooth on by default. If you turn off that since Blender doesn't do it, Max is even faster.
Ah, made my day. I didn't know watching 3ds Max updates can light up my soul. 😂
Biggest update ever, really amazing stuff
fur and hair 3ds max 2024.1 😉
I wish when it capped it would intelligently connect any edge flow and intersect the edges automatically
Wow, CAT got updated :) .
One year waiting just for this? Nice one!!!!🥓🥓
Best update ever, great news!
wow! i like it!
YAY!
What is going on at 1:27? Is it actually modifying the mesh or is the action being applied to the material as a normal map?
this has a chamfer modifier in top of the boolean. And is set to smooth all the object, so as I am doing changes you see small changes on the smooth. If I turn chamfer off, or only smooth the chamfer areas, this would not be visible.
Boolean is major update, great.
I love to 3ds max 2024 learning.
As far as modifier searching goes, does anyone use the global search? I use it almost exclusively now. I barely touch the ui.
11:29 - what renderer is it?
Material switcher is awesome. Now just need label/decal system like in keyshot.
I came for the video, but i stayed for the Blender comments, and they did not disappoint.
I am wondering, if we can still ---- DRAG & DROP multiple texture maps from Folder into the Material Editor???
Array as an active modifier is nice.
Thanks for the video! I'm a Max user for 18 years now and I have to say Autodesk upped their game quite a lot the last couple of years. They very well listened to the existeial threats from other companies and responded really well. I'd only be happier if I saw perpetual license again, but I know it's almost impossible.
Thanks anyway!
Now count how much time out of 18 years have you spent waiting for the 3dsmax window to open? I think at least six months
Thanks to blender development as Autodesk was seeing to loose the game.
@@hemzabomb ouch.
@@rajendrameena150 Blender and Rhino. I remember T-Splines back in the day and how Autodesk responded by simply buying the company and killing it, then adding it natively to Alias. McNeel responded by reinventing the whole Sub-D system into Rhino and needing no plug-in anymore. I think those moments and similar made Autodesk realize it's not only about the money and they have to actually listen to people.
@@samurai2150 yes I am also started learning rhino after frustrating from 3ds max and now I see how cunningly 3ds max copied the features of rhino. I am 3d archviz artist and I say max is a pain when we want to finally prepare working drawing but in rhino it just one command make2d and you are done. I use 3ds max just because more models are available in max format.
@9:53, been away from Max for a while, any guidance/keywords where to go to learn this kind of animations?
Thanks, great content on your channel!
This is using the new distance shader in arnold. I covered it on my patreon, and you can found tutorials on arnold channel
Looks like a great update. Are you able to shed any light on the cliff that you show at the beginning of the video? (around 0:14)
its an array mod over a simple box. Then boolean in top with vdb to get the organic look. Done by changsoo I think.
@@andvfx thanks!
I was really hoping to hear something about Viewport canvas maybe next time
5 mins ago i saw a blender video about ai mapping ! yes with promts.
is there any update in 3ds max including ai issues?
On the 3dsmax news video last month I covered a free script to create anything via maxscript or python using chatgpt
Not sure it was commented before but on the old material list you could always type the letters of the modifier you want and will take you there. Not sure if the new search is better. I want to try it.
If you move your mouse over the list, you still have the old behaviour. If you just start typing you get the searchbox that is muuuch better
After all these years, the boolean finally WORKS!!!!!
did they fix the UVW modifier packing feature?
I was hoping they add "smart extrude" in edit poly so I can precisely smart extrude a face to a certain length
I snap it to something
OCIO & new material editor, hell yeah.
can anyone suggest a good 3d modelling course for advanced modeller, but on new features starting 3ds max 2020 and beyond, thanks
Just wish there was a way to easily transfer custom setups like scripts/plugins, its possible but always a hassle to move to a new version
how did do the 1:26 object? the scifi effect
3ds max team is on fire with these updates since last year!
Can't install it, Used both ways (install or download installation). It reaches %8 then goes back to 0% and giving Error1.
My Windows is up to date, TMP and Temp folders are in default locations but I am using Windows 10. I hope it is not Win11 only!
could anyone tell me what is presented in 0:14 ? Video is not mentioning about such setup but it looks veeery nice. Anyone please ? :)
Thats an array of multiple boxs and then boolean set to vdb to create an organic mesh.
@@andvfx thanks.
They feeling the pressure
Finally, they have reworked the modifier dropdown!!
