Drinking game: take a shot every time Russ says "unfortunately" in this review.
The problem seems to be that by the time the community has helped these machines reach their full potential, they are hard to find or expensive as the manufacturer moves onto the newer models. Thanks to everyone that buys in early and helps a good system be great!
foreals i just paid $105 for a Miyoo mini. and they are on ebay for $140 currently lol
@@deleted72636 FFS!!! really!!? i thought they were $40!!!????
@antwango They WERE $54 plus shipping. Now they're over $90 plus shipping. It's always best to buy before it becomes popular and price goes up lol
@@deleted72636 The problem is you can never tell which ones will get picked up by the community to improve. Most of these cheap rigs aren't great out of the box. Guess I have to BUY THEM ALL!
I just have to say I love your intro graphics and the music you use for it, It's just so nice together. Plus your reviews are so thorough, so thanks for helping me make decisions on things to buy 👍
Not having "R2 and L2" buttons really limits the amount of ps1 games you can play. Seems like this will do alright for a lot of other systems. Screen is a bit too small for me, but I'm sure some people will love this handheld. Custom firmware could really help this one.
...and if it cost $50
You wouldn't want to play any 3D game on a crap ass tiny screen like that.
@@the_dietcam I just got mine for $60 CAD on ali so what is that $40usd? Hopefully by the time I get it we’ll have community support to make it even better. And for retro gaming (gbc, snes, genesis, gba..) in a Gameboy micro-like form factor with good software it will be incredible. Can’t wait!
@@fredisyoga873 hopefully. I have 351p that is better and got it cheaper than 80 dollar
@@jobearesto9746 I was thinking about that but didn’t want to go full out Russ because I already have the rg351v. I waited too long on the miyoo mini and now it’s hard to find and a lot more. I like the idea of a Gameboy micro-like travel piece. 🤞🙏
Like, literally before any purchase I look the device up on RUclips and watch your review. You have saved me so much money it's crazy
I was hoping for my horizontal brothers out there, that they would get their Horizontyoo Mini! I think a few of its issues could be fixed through custom firmware/OS. WiFi could be an awesome feature, too. Honestly though, I preferred the look of that other TrimUI device you brought out, it looked so much more solid.
Another great review russ! I plan on picking up the purple one!
-Needs an r1/r2 l1/l2
-a volume rocker
- to cost $50 or less
I don't really care for wi fi or bluetooth much. I'll wait for the landscape miyoo mini
Great video! Can you make a video on best devices for holiday gifts? Keep up the great work!
I’ve been looking forward to this, for some reason. ;) I’d think the miyoo mini v2/3 is better but we shall see.
I don't see $80 worth of a gaming console myself. The noise from those clicky buttons would drive me crazy.
Looking forward to seeing how the horizontal miyoo mini turns out. This is ok, but seems to have a lot of "but"s and the screen is a little bit too small
There was a custom firmware called Tomato OS that has added 66 systems and and disabled the LED light also as well as some configuration changes. Would be interesting if you examined the CFW and see how it changes your impressions of the device.
Oh thank you!! Just in time because I just bought this lol. It looks more comfortable than the Miyoo Mini and it has Bluetooth audio!! And good buttons?! The small screen size and low res doesn’t deter me at all because all I need something like this for is snes, genesis, gbc, and gba which I pixelate and degrade using shaders anyways to get the retro feels.
Great video, as always!
I've had one for a few weeks now and it's not too bad as an alternative to the Miyoo Mini. There are some bug bears such as not being able to change controls for specific emulators. There also seems to be a huge oversight in that there seems to be no way of changing discs on PlayStation games. I haven't tried a game yet that prompts you to change discs (perhaps the option only becomes available then?) but something like Resident Evil 2 for example is stuck on disc 1.
My Keepretro unit is "in the mail" somewhere as well. I can't wait to get my hands on it! Community dev is coming :)
What have you heard? Who’s working on it?
Thanks for bringing this console to my attention! Looks very promising for a pocketable alternative to miyoo mini (prefer landscape to miyoo mini vertical for ergonomics), and yet the weight is still similar to miyoo mini.
I feel that you really overlooked a killer feature regarding wifi and bluetooth. Being able to carry 2 of these and play retro games with friends is a HUGE killer feature, but does it actually work? Also, you didn't test whether or not a 8bitdo zero 2 controller could be paired with this for mobile two player game play. Both of these are totally unique and killer features which only are possible on first party handhelds for the most part as far as I know. And about the annoying music, turn off the volume, and bright light just put gorilla tape over the light. Sure, mindblowingly horrendous design decisions but not too hard to fix.
Dang dude, I thought the background music was pretty catchy lol
I wish the screen was a bit bigger. Just a bit too small.
Wayyyy too small. 4 inch or nope
Agreed, just a tad bigger (maybe 3 inches) would make this just about perfect.
@@Dracossaint thats what she said
@@kinghoju thats what she said
Kind of defeats the point
Ah man, had I known that the Miyoo Mini was coming out with a landscape model I would have held off. I kept checking the official store and finally got it when it was in stock. I guess I'll need to upgrade when it comes out.
I'll buy your mini from you. I'll pay shipping. Reply to this and I'll negotiate further
Netplay works fantastic, provided you connect to the Internet and update retroarch completely on both devices on both the standard and the trimUI versions, then use Hotspot to connect device to device via wifi and start the games on both devices. You will then load the menu on each with the game running, host Netplay on one and search LAN then join on the other.
I just may pick one up!
Just got mine, surprised just how small it is in person, but it has so many games I've been wanting to replay. Much cheaper than buying the games individually!
I saw this device was on Ali Express going for a heavily discounted price right now. I just picked one up with free shipping for around $43.
I wonder if you ever notice any backlight bleed on any of the screens you see? The one Ambernic device I purchased had it pretty bad. I wonder if I was very unlucky or if it's so common you don't think it's noteworthy or maybe just don't care about it. In the end, I decided it's too much to ask for everything to be perfect on these kinds of devices and am living with it.
I ordered this unit (on the way) specifically because there is no L2 R2.
I have plenty of play-it-all handhelds and wanted this specifically for snes/Genesis and under.
Hi Russ. I do appreciate your videos. A question though. I hope you can respond at some point.
Is there any chance you could disassemble these devices, when you are doing your reviews? Give us a look at the “guts”. But more importantly show us how easy it is to change the batteries. Is the battery easily accessible? Also, if any of these devices could run off of the ac. If it even comes w/ a plug.
I’m aware these ARE handhelds and most people would be using these on the go. But, still, maybe a video compilation of a teardown video of your various handhelds. If you are looking for additional content. Just a thought or two.
I still like thr credit card sized one more, but good to see they're focusing on tactile features.
It's so cute and smol! I love tiny things, absolutely adore my FunkeyS, so I think I'll be picking this one up too!
I'm waiting on a miyoo mini, I got lucky and got one on AliExpress for $60 a couple weeks back. This device looks sweet, tho. I might pick one up for my kid. The LED issue could be solved by a software update
The compelling thing about this handheld is it solves the size problem of the RG300X, while solving the lack of power problem of the Trimui Model S and the Powkiddy Q20. The RG300X looks as if it should compete in this category of small game boy micro like devices but it's surprisingly large, as big as the RG351P and the like. The benefit of the RG300X is that it has R2 and L2 though. But there are better options in its size category.
It's like the Genie's lamp. Incredible Pow-ah! Itty-bitty viewing space.
"Miyoo is working on a horizontal device"
That's enough reason for me to wait.
Thanks for the review, this one looks it's a good device but the price is way too steep for something less powerful than a RG351P, costing around the same. It's definitely the biggest drawback imho.
Sucks that the miyoo a30 is bad
@@Varaldar it's curious that basically 1 year later I bought the TrimUI Smart Pro... Lol
What Miyoo offers up until now is weak compared to every other Emulation Device from every other company, which is really sad. Their build quality was always really good, the hardware not that much.
@@mardukas13 yeah I actually ended up going for an Rgb30 for my every day emulation on the job and everything and a trimui smart for my lightweight throw in the pocket games. It was retro game corps' later review of the smart that made me think of it as a good tiny option. (I would have preferred the GDK pixel but it's a bit pricier and not good enough to be my only device, might get in the future)
Since I could get the smart for 37 and the rgb30 for 67 i did. And i was able to get both in the pretty purple :3.
The price reductions on these things recently is nuts. Everything that's not the high end or brand new is soooo cheap
Just what my day needed! I love the first one.
Should be at least half this price D:
If i didn't already have the Powkiddy A66 / TrimUI S, I would buy this. If CFW is created and you can find this cheaper or more available than a Miyoo Mini It's worth a purchase if you're interested in a SBC for retro gaming.
Now that mine has arrived I have to say it's a lot easier on my hands than the Miyoo Mini
I really hope that this can get Onion OS or similar because it would really be fantastic
So I'd love to hear your opinion. If I already have a modded Vita, is there any reason to pick this up other than the obvious feature of this being more pocket friendly?
I love the formfactor of the device. Hope we can see Onion OS in the future.
Cheers Russ, not one for my old eyes but very cute all the same. $50 seems more like it though.
I stand by what I said in a Taki video. This is the V-Tech of retro handhelds
you are the best man. regards
That thing personally would be way to small for me personally. If I'd want such a small device, I'd rather get the Miyoo Mini, even if I had to wait a bit for it.
Also, will you make a review to the Logitech G Cloud? Yesterday I already saw Retro Dodos Review, but I'd like to hear your opinion on it.
Mine just arrived in the mail, so I'll start working on it immediately.
@@RetroGameCorps Awesome! I looking forward to it 😄
As of August 2023, this is my favorite (chinese) portable console, because it is actually portable, fits in my pocket and only weighs 100g. And it plays cps3 games and has the best dpad on any chinese console I have ever tested, excep the trsimui model s has an equally good dpad. There is nothing else remotely comparable to this device on the market now or even in the past, unless you count the gameboy micro, which I also have. If I have the space/weight (which is rarely do in my pockets), I would take a ps vita slim or a new 3ds of course, but who has that kind of space/weight allowance in their pockets?
I wish they’d kept the barebones electronics design of their earlier model. It was much more unique looking and cool with that metal back.
Miyuu mini AliExpress page must be getting the hug of death everytime Russ drops a video.
maybe it's different for others, but imho it's always better when the buttons have a "soft" click, when you still can feel the click, but it is not a plastic hitting plastic sound
Can y’all imagine when steamdecks are this small?!
Hey Russ, any chance you plan on doing an updated review of this device with TomatoOS? Its much more desirable to have a device in this form factor that can run RetroAchievements.
Please do a review on this when the community churns out a custom firmware for this little device. It's performance does have some potential with its performance. The super mario world Yoshi island test was really impressive. Good job
I want to see it as a stand-in for the forgotten Gameboy Micro and would use it as such, keeping to NES, SNES, GB/GBC and GBA.
The pastel blue and purple ❤️, hopefully there will be custom firmware for it in the future and the price decreases. Wonderful review!
That screen could easily be bigger and no R2 L2
Oh I hope he compares to the gameboy micro! Those fetch a pretty penny these days if in good condition.
The screen/device is a bit small for my use case. I'd need mag glasses on to use this. :)
No one as of yet has achieved perfection (which would be the Gameboy Micro without the need for cartrages) but so far this thing seems the closest. I'll find out in a few weeks when mine arrives.
Really wish it came in silver, or dark grey though. Not a fan of the candy colours and white plastic doesn't age well.
Hopefully this things D-pad is smoother than the A66's. That's the biggest flaw I've noticed in that device,...other than not playing my Activision Collection roms that is.
I just got my Miyoo Mini. If this thing performs as well as the Miyoo Mini with Wifi to support multiplayer gaming, I'm going to be pissed. And it even has a lanyard connection, so that's another advantage it has over the Miyoo Mini.
It looks like this is close but falling a little short of the Miyoo Mini. Even with an upgraded user provided OS, it's still going to be held back by the hardware limitations: smaller screen, lack of shoulder buttons, and unreliable wifi/blutooth. But I would expect the next iteration of this device to solve those problems.
this device is old but it's really good for the design so yeah, I'll buy it, since I literally have nothing to do.
When people say pocketable this is the size that I've always think of RP3 anything else goes in a backpack or a bag for me anyways
I can't play on such small devices, but I really want to grab a Miyoo Mini and an RG280V at some point because they look so darn nice!
You should :) I have both, they are so pocketable. I never go anywhere without grabbing one.
@@ruffark Nice!
I keep thinking the same thing, i just think it would be so awkward to use for most games. I do kind of like the idea of playing rpgs one handed like he has mentioned he can do with a vertical device like that.
That's a shame, I was kind of looking forward to this one, mostly based on the aesthetic. If it gets decent CFW, I'll still grab one probably, but if Miyoo does come out with a horizontal device, ESPECIALLY if it is compatible with onion, then who are we kidding here?
I wonder if the firmware will work with the Powkiddy A30 which used a modded version of the original TrimUI consoles.
Does the text to speech in the accessibility options work on this device ?
Reminds me of the Dingoo A380
when is the miyoo mini horizontal coming out then???
The original PocketGo should have been added to the comparisons.
Seems like a cool handheld, just disappointed in how small the screen is as others mentioned
I couldn't imagine playing a game on this tiny screen
I had a *Dingoo a320* when they first came out, it was possible but not that good.
Once I hit 40 my ageing eyes couldn't deal with a DS Lite so I just use a DSi XL/3DS XL.
Wait a minute it can run SF 3rd strike smoothly? And can run other CPS3? And has Wifi? With that form factor. Damn I was thinking getting A66 but you peek my interest
Será que vai ter custom firmware como o MinUI por exemplo?
As soon as you mentioned the menu music issue it was just a straight no. I just can't think of a reason to put that on a device at all?
I'm surprised you seem to like this better than the Ambernic rg300x. I bought one of those and I don't really see anything about this device that is better. Although I haven't had one of these in my hand, and it sounds like the dpad could be better. The ambernic has a bigger screen, and r2 and l2 buttons, although they feel awkward to use , and it seems to play even 3d playstation games well. Also it runs the adam image you like and while the price was too high initially it seems to have come down.
Can you not use bilinear filters to balance the pixels out?
is there any atari 2600 emulator?
hi thank you
my trimui smart
After menu button, save ok.
But load can not.
you same?
I'm not one to brag, but the TrimUI isn't the only thing with a tiny but effective package.
Do you think I should get this or the powkiddy v90?
no headphone jack?
Which of these devices can also function as a bluetooth controller for my pc?
I thought they did produce a Anbernic RG280p but I must have a "false memory" because I can't find it anywhere on line!
Looks like a battery bank 🙏🏽👍🏾
I think this device would be perfect for my kid, she's about to turn 2 and I'd like her to experience the games that I've played as a kid. I still hold my wife's RG300 dear bc of the lack of L2 R2, it makes small handhelds very cramp and uncomfortable like how it feels on my RG351V. I personally don't buy these low powered handhelds for PS1, I use them for the old gameboys and a couple of 16 bit consoles.
What they need to do is a device that costs less than 60 USD and being able to emulate link cable connection on GB, GBC and GBA.
Have you met the Powkiddy V90? Might be just what you're looking for.
@@lumorowenamooncaller9811
Or even the Powkiddy Q90 if you prefer the horizontal chassis.
I just one a board, not a system, a board that can be put inside a GBA shells, reproductions of GG or wanderswan.
The Anbernic RG300X is what you need!
@@lumorowenamooncaller9811 can you trade Pokémon on a V90?
Is there a biger version beasuce ihave big hands
Hey I bought one of these tiny devices and I love it, but I can't play back-to-back games without having to turn it off and turn it back on! Anyone else having this problem
Hypothetically, would it have been acceptable if this design had six face buttons instead of four shoulder buttons? I don't think four shoulder buttons would have been good for this small form factor, those buttons would be liable to break in some way
Six button layout would be better for Sega Genesis and many arcade games too
Cheeky title
Im too old for this screen 😂
I would think that playing in the dark could be easily fixed by putting an opaque sticker over the LED. No need to open the case...
I'm not seeing a $80 value. $50 at most.
Can I take a moment to complain about how easy Russ makes it look to remove the micro SD card? If I don't let my fingernails grow out further than usual I absolutely HAVE to use a tool to click them in and out 😅
A penny works just fine for me.
This doesnt have to be connected to the net all the time right
Are you getting the Trimui Smart Pro? I'd like to see a video on that.
Yes, I'm wrapping up my review of it now.
@@RetroGameCorps sweet
