    Warm in winter and cool in summer - with today's energy prices, we should all be living in caves. I like that you can expand the rooms unless you have a neighbour too close lol.

      Whilst staying in Mojarca, Spain we went on a coach trip to Grenada. On the way back we stopped at a tiny hamlet, where inhabitants lived in caves and earned an income from making garden pots etc from local clay.
      One old man rode up to the tiny bar on a donkey. He then entertained customers telling his family history of living in the caves for generations. Apparently when a young couple wanted to set up home the parents just allowed them to dig out another room in their cave and they all lived together. He enjoyed the tips and drinks the tourists treated him to.🍷🍷
      A final amusing twist as we drove away was to see tv ariels poking out of the grassy mounds above the caves.😄

      @@throughlucyslens the canal side shelters were not far from the cave houses, I will ask my mum where it was. Sadly my parents gave up thier canal boat around 5 years ago, it was based in Gailey, the canals around there are wonderful and we saw places easily missed by road. Lots of interesting houses and buildings open to the public. We found the cave houses by accident. If you get a chance get out on the canal.

      @@throughlucyslens Our homes are in Missouri, a place with a lot of karst caves (geologic term). It is also possible to build earth sheltered homes on private land because many counties don't have building codes.
      My own family were Native American settlers in Oklahoma, prior to the forced removal labeled "The Trail of Tears". People would often build a "soddy" into a hillside because on the plains there was a lack of trees to build a log cabin. My family's old soddy from the early 1800s is still in use as a food cellar on the original homestead.

    I’m sure other commenters have said the same, but this reminds me so much of the underground houses of Coober Pedy in Australia. Some really fascinating Coober Pedy homes show up on real estate sites from time to time, which were owned by elderly people who barely altered them over the decades. They are often even sold with assorted furniture and household objects still in place, so it is a real pleasure to look through the images, like a time capsule. Similar to the homes in your video, they are generally owner-excavated, so there is a lot of personality and individuality to each room.

    Lovely to see the rock houses, used to go quite often with my late husband. I can remember when people still lived in them. The town of Kinver is lovely to visit too. A few years ago Grand Designs tv featured a rock house that someone renovated to live in, i believe it's at Habberley, not far from Kinver. There were a few places.like this with cave houses cut into sandstone cliffs. Very interesting, thank you ☺️

    My husbands great uncle owned a mountain in Tennessee and it had a cave in it. His dad explored it when he first got the property. He found huge bones in it (maybe giant sloth bones), indian artifacts, and during the civil war the Confederacy stored gunpowder in this cave. To transport the gunpowder there was a wooden rail in the cave. The uncle's father decided to explore the cave and see how far it went. After three days of exploring he had not found the end of the cave. They thought it migh be connected to the cave system in the Cumberland Gap, which would make it huge. When his great uncle was still alive we went to visit him. The cave looked like a little hole in the side of the mountain but when you went in it opened up into a huge room, big enough to build a two story house inside it. My husband thought about asking his great uncle if he could buy it from him, but he never did. When the great uncle died his daughters sold the cave and land it was in to the state. The state said it wanted to turn it into a tourist attraction, but around 25 years later nothing had been done with it.

    • @throughlucyslens
      @throughlucyslens  3 месяца назад

      What a shame! But you had me at GIANT SLOTH BONES! Woah! Thats absolutely incredible and sounds like it does need to be an attraction and saved. States (or councils as we call them here) rarely return on their promises so they, mores the pity!

    • @susanfarley1332
      @susanfarley1332 3 месяца назад

      @@throughlucyslens my husband visited there when he was a kid and found a bow and a quiver full of arrows made by some Indian tribe. But since he was a kid and the adults around thought he had junk they let him destroy them. Horrible. I visited that cave with my husband later and got as far as the area where the gunpowder was stored. The little rails on the floor of the cave were wooden ( no sparks to set off the gunpowder) seemed in good condition. It was a dry cave. That is as far as I went.
      Those giant sloth bones may be around somewhere on that mountain. The uneducated adults just let the kids play with them.
