We have Judy Blume on a tree painted outside the children’s library. On the same tree is Enid Bloom, a woman my Mom worked hard for. It amazes me how much things can shape and change our lives, even in just a book that the library bought.
Something I really love about Amanda is that her voice isn't the "perfect" voice that you hear on the radio. It's raw, powerful and adds a lot of character to her music.

I'm a 59 year old tradesman who's done rough work since I was twelve. Jail a million times yet this stuff makes me cry too. Amanda makes me relate to the struggles of women in general. I was always very progressive but I sobbed when I voicemail for Jill. I guess my life was hard and scary and I can better feel the hardships of women and girls based on my past relationships and understanding that we all felt scared and alone etc.

Blume is an excellent writer, who is frequently overlooked/forgotten. I was actually exposed to her writing while taking a class in college on Creative writing for Young Readers. So it never dawned on me that I was a man reading "female" literature. I've never been one to feel bound up by genre definitions.
I can remember reading that one of her adult novels, "Wifey" was on the proposed banned book list for the Gainesville (or maybe it is known as the Alachua County) Library. So, naturally, I had to read it. It was a smart, sassy, funny, and compelling read.
After reading it, I remember writing a letter to the editor of the Gainesville Sun, defending the First Amendment, and pointing out the hypocrisy of politicians who scream for less government interfering with that amendment. I finished the letter thanking them for the reading suggestion. Not long after the letter was published, I got a phone call on a Saturday morning, and it was a local commissioner, Mac MacEachern, wanting to discuss my letter and why he proposed putting the book on the list. I don't remember too much about the conversation, other than it was cordial, and neither of us changed our position.
So, yeah, read some Judy Blume.

Same here. Thankfully no one told me that a guy shouldn't read books written by women. Certainly librarians and bookstore owners and employees never did. Which meant I got exposed to many female authors (they range from very good to excellent, but I'm not listing them here in that order): Jo Clayton, Andre Norton, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Judy Blume, Rosemary Cleary (? author of "The Mouse on a Motorcycle"), C.J. Cherryh, Anne McCaffrey, George Eliot, Emily Bronte, Charlotte Bronte, Anne Bronte, Ursula K. LeGuin, Louise Cooper, Patricia McKillip, Katherine Kurtz, Sharon Green, the author of "I Never Promised You a Rose Garden (I can't remember her name right now), Truddi Chase, J.K. Rowling, Diana Wynne Jones, and Stephenie Meyer, to name a few. The world would be a far less interesting place to be in if all the books one were allowed to read were written only by men.

I love how some of the readers are in the weird contorted positions you try when you've been reading for hours and will do anything to be comfortable, except put down the book.
It never fails. If I play this song it makes me cry with nostalgia and longing. This is why Amanda Palmer is one of my favorite artists. Her lyrics are so raw and it never fails to bring me to my knees

The details are likely not comparable, but that line touches me deeply. For reasons I'll not go into, I don't remember many details, either. And what I do recall of my time in seventh grade is fearful. My home life was, in a word, torturous and the rest wasn't much better. I didn't have any real friends.
But I had my books. And I had music.

There is magic in the worlds created in books. The ones I’ve loved have taught me so many lessons, even about myself, and I never really stopped to think until just now that yeah....when you connect with a character in a book, you’re not just having a connection with a character, you’re having a secret and direct connection to another real human being who HAS thought the same things as you and found a way to say them. I’ve never read any Judy Blume, but this makes me want to. Thank you to every author, artist, songwriter, screenplay writer, animator, and beyond who’ve helped us find ways to connect and to grow. Maybe while we didn’t even know that’s what we were doing.
Judy Blume, btw, is the original agony aunt writer. She set the mould for authors like Divorce books ("It's Not The End of The World" compared to "The Suitcase Kid"), bullying books ("Blubber" compared to "Bad Girls"), and much more. Blume's are more pessimistic, but there are some similarities. Karen's parents don't get back together, and nor do Andy's. Wendy and Kim both lose their friends, but don't get punished in any other way for their bullying.
There is magic in belief, in thought, in idea. Plant the right idea in fertile ground, and a forest will grow.
What a great ode to the fantastic author that helped so many of us feel not alone. I miss those days of hanging out in the library. Haven't read a physical book in months.
After "Half Jack", this is the one song that I cannot hear enough when you perform live. Both of these songs have helped me to come to terms with myself and who I am and realize that "You will not be alone with your thoughts, well you will, but you won't in a way" can be such a tremendous comfort. It's the writers, musicians, dancers, actors, and artists that put themselves out there, as you do, who allow vulnerability to be a strength that get us all through the day and teach us all to cope with that horrendous nagging sense of doubt, insecurity, and self-imposed isolation. We're all in this together. Thank you for being one of the people who helps the world to remember.

I was introduced to Judy Blume when I was about seven or eight, and I think all her books have a feeling of timelessness. Teens always have and always will observe bullying, worry about their body shape, lie to fit in, take the wrong risks, have problems with their friends, and experience life. I really identified with Deenie. She hates that she's being treated like she's seriously ill and to be pitied. My problems aren't visible like hers, but it's the same - I don't want people to feel sorry for me.
I read Tiger Eyes when I was 15. It did help me feel like I wasn't alone in the world (even if I was being abused and doing everything I could to escape it), and for that I'm forever grateful to Judy Blume. This song made me cry, AGAIN. Then again, you have that way about you Amanda, and I thank the Gods everyday that you continue making music that makes me cry, sing at the top of lungs, dance, and revel in the moment.

Old comment but I hope you did. She was sort of like the first agony aunt. Even before I came across Jacqueline Wilson (my longtime childhood agony aunt), Judy Blume was always there to tell me that the only way to end bullying is to stand up for yourself, divorce is hard but you can adjust, people you love will die, parents are people too and won't get everything right, friendships change and evolve, and it's okay to make mistakes. Then there's all the other personal growing-up girl stuff: Masturbation is normal and harmless, periods won't hurt but they take a while to regulate themselves, everyone grows at different rates, it's okay to be frank about safe s*x (starring to avoid demonitization), and the most important lesson: You are not alone.

Okay, let's take the superficial things first: wow, that hair color looks great on you. Also, love the glasses.
Then to the song and the video. I've liked this song from very beginning. But like all the good music vids, this just gave it whole new spin. Happy to have been funding it. Jason has a good touch with directing: the dramaturgy of the video progresses all the way to the end. It's subtle, but works very well. I love the end when the camera gets up and there's all these people: the young, the old, the ones inbetween, the men and the women and all the others, and that akward English guy who just can't stay put. Love it.
I hope that as an author I will someday hear that I have made such an impression on somebody.

This was so, so moving. I get ridiculously emotional at montages in general but having been child bookworm (who loved Judy Blume) and who took a lot of comfort in very frightening times from reading, watching all those people absorbed in those books hit so hard, in the best way.

This is one of my favourite songs that you've ever written. I find myself revisiting it frequently because it's not often that you listen to a song on RUclips that makes you want to turn off the laptop after you hear it and go hug a book. That's something rare. That's something powerful. In a documentary on Kate Bush, Neil once talked about the power of combining the influence of literature and literary ideas with pop music, and I think he was onto something. One of my favourite songs by Joy Division was inspired by Nicholai Gogol, one of my favourite Led Zeppelin songs was inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien, and one of my favourite songs by Siouxsie Sioux, from her side project The Creatures, was inspired by J.G. Ballard. I often find inspiration for my own lyrics and essays come from books, from films, from photography, and from other songwriters. Today I found myself writing about Amanda Palmer, about feminism, about mythology and fairy tales, about Frida Kahlo, and about photographers Kahn & Selesnick. I don't know who first dropped the pebble in, but the ripples continue ever outward...
