- In this excerpt of a conversation with head of TED Chris Anderson, AI developer (and Deepfake Tom Cruise co-creator) Tom Graham explores how photoreal AI-generated content - media that looks and sounds exactly like the real world - will come to permeate our lives over the next decade. He offers a proof of concept directly from the stage as they discuss the creative and educational potential of this technology along with its risk for exploitation.

Now, even when someone is caught on video tape, they can always claim it is a deep fake. Conversely, innocent people could easily be framed.
I really just forgot bout your channel, damn!
I probably won't get a reply but how's the day going?
there's software that can detect deepfakes
@@DecibelAlex Someone's reputation can be ruined, before anyone even thinks of using software to detect a deepfake.
hollywood coming to a town near you now!
Crazy world! I'm just here for the ride!
Yes we should be worried, we already have completely differing interpretations of reality fuelled by social media echo chambers and deepening divisions in society as a result which could be just the start.
There needs to be some sort of encoded data that can not be manipulated in order to determine if the video data is a.i generated or not as well as required disclaimers on videos that something is an a.i video and penalty for not doing so.
I remember I’ve seen/ heard about Benford’s law. But, I feel like once the AI knows about this law and how to bypass that, we’re still f*cked.
Knock yourself out, who is keeping you from doing something so simple
Scammers will use it as they want
Nvidia are developing software that can detect deepfakes
@@DecibelAlex there's AIs that are trained to detect AIs^^
So it needs to be dealt with at an industry level, with a set of laws and regulations that ensure the people producing media are making it really clear when something is AI-generated. And that the people who consume media have recourse when something fake gets through the cracks.
imagine having "a new set of institutions" that will dictate "the truth"; even if you see something with your own eyes, they will tell you it's not true and you will accept it or go to jail, or you will go to jail anyway because maybe this 'institution' wants you in jail and they just say that you murdered someone.
the solution SHOULD NOT be to trust "institutions" to tell you what is true and what is not, because that's a very very very dangerous dystopian slippery slope. These deep fakes do leave behind artifacts which are not present from real video/content. So the solution should be to educate the public on this and to make everyone understand how important this is and how to do their own research... but the elites are dying to be in control of the truth; they will finally take back the control they lost to the internet age and in fact, they will have even more control than before.
Sounds like 1984
Since he said a "set" of institutions he probably meant the other meaning of the word; "an established law or practice". Perhaps "methods" or "systems" would have been a better choice of words.
@@ThankYouJR feels like people like him took 1984 as a challenge.
But there must be ways to detect if something is authentic videos or deepfakes, just like we can do with pictures. Like a machine can detect if something has been modified even if we can't tell with our own eyes, a machine can.
This was pointless. He didn't want to directly address the adverse bullet points because he has an inherent conflict of interest that would undermine his own work.

Well its time to change the old saying and make it current: "Believe none of what you hear and half of what you see unless its online, then believe none of what you see"
Concur.
Where is the full video?
“What is now proved was once only imagined.” -William Blake
I'm waiting for the movie industry to tap into a market where we could have alternate versions of movies with other actors instead of the originals. There's plenty of videos that do just that and I'm sure there's money to be made there.
Actors won't be needed at all other than some AI teaching samples.
don't encourage evil for fecks sake man!!
First, morality rules have to be nailed in to the AI "mind" !!!
Nope, the AI, will take all the rules and rearrange them to meet their objective, because it's logic is bound to other physics
Funny how Mask asked to stop for a little bit and then turned out that he developing his own AI so he just wanted to slow down rivals😂
Before long you won't be able to believe ANYTHING you see or hear unless it comes from a trusted source and even they may be fooled and pass on mis-information unawares.
We're already there.
the only source we should trust is our own eyes seeing it in the flesh!!!
@@timetowaketheheckup123 You can't trust that either. Ever hear of holograms?
Just let us know when skynet takes over.
Terrifying
Maybe people will finally start questioning all the things they see on internet?
Lips were bit weird when he talked and the voice sounds quite robotic. That said, I love what those guys do. Tom Cruise and Paris Hilton nad America's Got Talent.
Yes. Yes we should
Very, yes
Well these guys look quite legit to me, Tiktok, AGT and now Ted. Yeah, cool people/
There is nothing positive about this technology.
useful in film making
@@DecibelAlex it’s not worth it.
You gotta see it to believe it
The dangerous genie is out of the bottle and is now totally out of control!
Wait, this is the guy behind Deep Tom Cruise?
What benefits can come from lies??
Nothing wholesome & pure from my experience. My family pushed & pushed holiday characters on me, to 1 day revile they were lying. That had a significant impact on my trust in my family & and others later in life. I never know what to believe unless I experience it myself, but then I have biases & have had flashbacks & hallucinations, so I don't have anything I can truly trust. I just coast through life & try to adapt. Hope for the best, but plan for & expect the worst.
I had a similar experience when I was 5 years old. Around the holidays I had looked in my aunts closet and noticed some presents it would seem only to be given them on Christmas morning from "santa" it's one of my first memories as I couldn't believe that my whole family had lied to me for years. I have 2 children now. And they know where thier presents come from.
I'm with you, almost egg-zackery 🍀🌼🌸🏵️
Wow, you've got bigger problems if learning about Santa troubled you that much. I'm not saying that to be rude - it's not supposed to affect one that deeply and I'd be willing to bet there are other deeper issues going on there.
@@austindenotter19 When I was younger I had the pompous attitude that my future children would know who's bought them their Christmas gifts and I'd never impose the Santa Claus lore onto them. Well, I grew up, realized there's something to be said for giving children an innocent magical thing to believe in (much like "meeting" Disney characters in costume at the theme parks) - they're only little once and you'll never get this time back as a parent and they'll never get this time back as children. I have 4 kids now and from the very first one when I was only 21 years old, even though we're a non-religious (albeit spiritual) family, my kiddos look forward to "Santa, the Easter Bunny, and the tooth fairy" coming every year - the light and magic in their big, bright eyes is so worth it - they're aware of who buys them all of their birthday gifts and literally every other expense. Why burden them with finances at such a young age? It's sad.
@K8 the Gr8 good on you for breaking useless traditions 👍
Yes.
Yes
Yes, we should be worried. Luckily, I am a skeptic.
internet will be broken
Raising awareness ? Get cracked mate ....
Anything on a screen will/should be heavily discounted, but will that extend to phone calls? Is the world going to increasingly be divided between those who fall for the fakes and skeptics who trust almost nothing?
Just saw the Work of metaphysic on Eminem's Latest Song....looked so real!
time to stop watching [believing] the news and social media if you haven’t stopped already
Think about your family before doing something, if people don’t have family, I can’t be sure about this
We certainly should be worried.
Who do you trust? Who do you support?
This new tech is both a gigantic prob and a super opportunity. New jobs will be created while old ones will disappear. People will have to adapt.
welcome to Black Mirror.
No.
Because we should easily be able to be authentic to ourselves.
Short answer: yesn't
You fear the unknown. Once you'll understand this tech, you'll feel much better.
the people that develop this tech are fearful.
@@mbolez I don't think so. Not all of them I would say.
They are creating them then complaining about creating them and how dangerous they are. Then stop!
Right because putting the genie back in the bottle is a thing that happens... worked for pandora right?
The people complaining are not the ones creating them.
I believe the Antichrist will be using all of these things to decieve people.
"And they gave life unto the image of the beast, that it should speak." Rev 13 Bible.
I don't see any prob with this tech is the content is appropriately labeled. If there is a problem with this tool, then what about Photoshop?
Trust The Ordinary Media.
Fred Sassy investigated this on Cheyenne News already.
This will end democracy.

Yep, can't trust too much that (I mean in this short video, it does make sense, but..)
mmm actually I do not freak out. I'm old enough to have read the same comments back in the 90ies when Internet went viral. And same story when social networks were launched a decade after. That said, AI needs to be integrated in our societies, respecting laws and a certain level of morality.
Then you are obviously not aware of how the Internet and social media have contributed to widespread mental illness, division, loss of touch with reality, depression, and fraud.
Is this video a deep fake fit for a keepsake? 👩🏿⚖️🕺🏿
Hyper reality he said? It means more real than the real? How come?
Is this a Ted short? Or... He said something you actually can do😈
If you're worried about what the technology can be used for... Why create it in the first place?! That's a stupid question, right?
he didn't create it
This only virtual media
AI can also tell if something is real or a deepfake, so there's that.
It really extremely danger, red alert, but we will have solutions, don’t worry 😂😂😂
Trust us!
This excuse of the technology already being out there, so it's better to go with it... well... if people were actually not just jumping on the train for the cash-grab they'd be inventing technology that can uncover fakes and publicly highlight them as such for everyone to see. That would be a smart thing to do when having that kind of power in your hands. I don't see that here. I only see a worsening of the problem. And it's being sold as the classic "if I don't go for it and therefore make it worse, someone else will" type of narrative. There are other ways to go. Less money in there though, therefore not interesting, obviously. A shame.
Nvidia are developing software that can detect deepfakes
We're already part of the way there imo. Just think about how camera filters work on modern smartphones.
On developing software to detect and stop AI-faked videos: I believe this becomes much easier if well-intentioned people lead the development of said AI-fake technology, or if people are incentivized to keep the work above board and regulated. Think of it like how tech companies use bug bounty programs.
0:49 lol it can do better than that
Smfh... what's the logic in making a.i smarter to be able to create deepfakes and then complaining about it smfh... didn't muskrat just talk about this with tucker recently.
Make your money king. Push this disgrace of a world we're headed to like you're life depended on it every single day, and act worried about it.
😂
Kid Rock and Donald Trump made a deep fake about me. 😂
I really don’t see the point in deep fake technology. Yeah I guess I’ll be good for films but I don’t think that’s worth the harm it’s gonna cause. When did we stop making technology to make life easier?
No
😮
He looks deep fake irl
Well Yes, But Actually No
As a matter of fact,... Yes.
Believe none of what you read, & half of what you see.
Pretty sure it's the other way around
Nah, they're too busy deep faking famous people. Chances are that they dont know you.
Orson Wells would love this technology, If he were alive.
We specialize in creating artificially generated content that looks and feels exactly like reality so we take kind of real world data re-train these new neural Nets and it can more accurately than VFX or CGI really create this content but looks and feels so natural well
But I am looks and feels so I’m not sure I will I am going to challenge you and your team to do a bit of a first yeah I mean there’s video of you right up on that screen
Show us something surprising you couldn’t oh wait so there we go with this is um you know a life real time model of Chirs on top of me um running in real time.I'm so uncomfortable with this. I am so uncomfortable Can it can it do voice as we think the can we're really pushing we're really pushing
1 of these 2 are not like the other. They may both be deeply faked

1st comment!
The edit, right after the staged question in the beginning was so deceptive. Making it seem like the AI could speak for him. Lol for what? Just ruins the credibility.
There isn't a way to deep fake how evil TED has become
You have done nothing of any positive use .... And your justification of the deep fake situation as being out of your hands, inevitable & unstoppable only go to prove how far gone you are as a person. Literally how can you even sleep at night?
Yes
Yes.
