If this method works better for you, that's great! but I think maybe something that could work in ynab is if you simplify the categories. for example, I have all my utilities grouped under one category, same with subscriptions. it's a lot less to look at and maybe less overwhelming for cody. just a thought!
I love seeing how you are always making sure your relationship is the top priority. Great comments on your video. It is always good to roll with what your gut tells you. If it doesn’t work you can switch back. Best wishes to Val with making her health a priority and feeling supported by Cody. You two are very inspiring. ❤️
You two are awesome. I love seeing how you support each other and communicate with each other! Sad to not be getting YNAB videos anymore, but definitely would love some marriage videos!
I really struggled for a while after canceling my YNAB subscription (after 12 years!). It's a great tool but I wanted to have a break to see if I could remember how to budget and math on my own. Good luck with everything!
I freaking love this for you guys!!! I initially followed you both because of YNAB but stayed because I love your relationship and banter and stuff. Sometimes I feel kinda same about the program with nickel and diming myself. I'll follow regardless! A video of marriage meetings would be cool af too.
I am also trying to figure out a less detailed approach to budgeting so I'm curious to see how this goes :) I think the opportunity to trick yourself into thinking you have more money than you do is what makes me nervous (ie having a vague budget doesn't mean those expenses disappear, if that makes sense). Good luck!
Wish you the best. I understand the whole trying something new and budgeting together without YNAB is better than the budget being an obstacle. The challenges I see is that you’ve lumped spending and groceries together. Before there was a clear line between them (and tracking as well) whereas with the spreadsheet, extra caution of just looking at the bank account will be needed so you don’t spend it all in the wrong areas. If I were to give advice, it’d be use both methods until you’re sure on this spreadsheet works. Then if it doesn’t work, you don’t have to re-establish yourself.
Yes, I agree with this too. The general lump sums give me a lot of anxiety. Not so much for the separate bills and savings accounts, but definitly for the spending. I worry that we will overspend on dining out and fun things, only to realize we don't have enough left for gas and groceries. But just because it won't work for me, doesn't mean it won't work for Cody. I have agreed to let him take over the finances, and this is the method that works best for him. I expect there will be growing pains and hiccups, but he's budgeted like this for years before I came along and did really really well with it. So I'm choosing to trust him. I voice my concerns to him when they come up, and he's really good at explaining his mindset, methadology, and his way to mitigate these risks. Which puts me at ease. Even if it's not always the way I would do it, or sometimes I can't wrap my head around it. I'm choosing to trust him and his ability to do it his way.
@@thezilinskilife I don't fully understand the technical details (my husband does), but we just have a 1 or 2TB drive we store our media on and access it via Plex. The computer connected to the drive has to be on to access it from other devices. We had one of our drives fail in the past so that was a huge bummer and I think we're looking to find ways to mitigate against that.
I use YNAB so that I do not have to put a lot of effort into budgeting. I have loads of cash and investment accounts and YNAB gives me a good overview. Plus I can use it in my iPhone, iPad and computers. I can make it as detailed or general as I want. At the moment I am making a program that dumps YNAB s data in a spreadsheet for planning purposes.
I absolutely love YNAB and being detailed in the budget. Although lately it's been giving me a bit of anxiety. YNAB is not something that seems to work for Cody, so hopefully by switching to a method that works better for him, things will work better overall.
I hope your new method works -not sure I follow the concerns with YNAB having save for pending things vs a haircut - won’t you still need the things you were saving for? Wish you the best and will enjoy watching your success!
Cody is a natural saver, so he throws money into savings every payday. Having that lump sum there makes him less likely to spend it, vs me looking in YNAB and thinking "I could steal some money from vehilce maintenance to cover the dining out overspending". So he still technically saves for those things, it's just in a lump sum instead of parted out so detailed in YNAB. We'll do a more in depth video sharing why we are giving this a go, and how Cody's methadology works differently from mine. hi cody here ^_^ i keep a master list of all the things we have to pay for, its mostly a mindset shift. I do much better prioritizing a large bucket than I do trying to shuffel a bunch of half-filled cups. it kinda kills me constantly emptying all the little catergories to prioritize something specific.
Multiple mid life crises. I love it. I am the same way lol. I found you guys because of YNAB and just last month I switched from YNAB for some of the same reasons. I love YNAB but it doesn’t work for my husband either. He’s different from Cody in that he doesn’t want to do the money and it’s so much work for me. All the allocation made me overwhelmed and also started giving me anxiety. But all that said I will definitely keep coming back to your channel because you guys are awesome!
The detailed nickle and diming used to give me security, and now I also find it makes me feel anxious. We're excited to see how this method works for us.
Love that you've given yourself space to reassess.
Sounds like this will be a positive change for your family dynamics.
I hope so too!
Definitely love the mindset shift of how you all are doing this. Look forward to the journey!!
Us too! We're excited to share how things go :)

We did originally try doing this. And we may have to end up doing it that way. But Cody finds just looking at the bank account easier.
@@thezilinskilife what about on the app - just make one category for the spending that he can look at 🤷🏼♀️

We'll definitely be doing some marriage videos, as well as an update on how the new budgeting thing is working out hehe
Thanks
Thank you for the support!

That is our worry as well. Which is why we are separating out our bulls and savings/sinking funds. So that we don't accidentally spend them
I completely understand. I’ve kinda been thinking about doing the same thing but going back to just using paper. 💜
Excited to see what you guys settle on!
Great video, love the care you have for each other.
Thank you 😊

What are you going to use media for? Plex? We're using it now, but not with our own dedicated server, which we are hoping to do at some point too.
I was considering Plex or Jellyfin. I didn't realize you could host your media elsewhere? Do you just use a cloud based server then?
