This video is a 4 part series on how to suture like a surgeon. In part 1, Dr. Webb talks about what suturing is, the different types of sutures, how to handle your instruments and how to throw an interrupted simple suture. #suture #howtosuture #howtosuturelikeasurgeon
How do you know which stitch to use to stitch up different wounds, or surgury a etc, i can’t find anything about it online. Is it just preference or just based on how much scarring it will make? I am a freshman in highschool so i’m still really young but i really want to be a surgeon when i’m older and i just bought a suture kit to practice.
Dr Anthonio I saw this tutorial after couple of days of ER rotation. I struggled suturing b/c of the way i used to sutures. I watched your video and practiced locking and unlocking the while walking , watching movie and wow now suturing is way easier and fun. And also the angle of the suture saved me a lot of sprain in my PALMAR MUSCLES. THANK YOU DOC.
Hi Dr. Webb, I am 13 years old and I just got a suture kit! I want to be an orthopedic surgeon and I am excited to start learning to how to sutures! Thank you.
Hi Dr Webb, I am a 13 year old kid and I think I might like to be a surgeon in the future, every time I watch a Dr Webb video I become more and more interested in medicine! I appreciate your vids very much Doctor!
Thanks to you I now know how to do a simple knot. I'm an MA and totally lost touch on how to properly suture, so I bought this exact kit and started to teach myself. Thank you!
My plastic surgeon preceptor, who's very concerned with proper technique, does not agree with several things mentioned here, 😅. Just wanted to mention it in case anyone else has a preceptor who's a plastic surgeon. I did so well in derm, got to plastic surgery, and basically had to start from scratch 🙃
My favorite thing about this video is all the young people in the comments who want to go into the medical field! You guys follow that dream and never give up!!
15 yo male, you are a big inspiration and reminder to keep grinding. Definitely want to be an orthopedic or cardiac surgeon. Already shadowed with a PA and hoping to get in contact with a surgeon.
THANK YOU so much, the instruments and suture types helped a lot. There are also no clear straightforward videos that show basic knots so this is a first of its kind on here, thanks again
Thank you for this video, my dream is to become an orthopedic surgeon and as medical students we don't get much training on that. This helped me to start preparing.
Very helpful series. Could you please consider making an in-depth video on suture handling. I feel like this is something a lot of students including myself struggle with.
Good video. Once you get to more complicated knots, it might be convenient to keep a close up point of view angle of the instruments. That way the tying method will be easier to follow. The switching between camera angles makes it a little bit more difficult. Keep it up! Cheers
Everybody is different. I have never used Adson rat toothed pickups to skin. I use the side of my thumb and with a light pressure I push or pull away from the skin edge creating a pucker to catch the needle. I keep a sponge in that off hand. Unless receiving an instrument I don't "palm" it. One click only closing instruments. I've always kept my instruments tucked, ring or long finger. This allows me to use and keep needle drivers and suture scissors in one hand. Blunts up sharps down. Just as important is prepping....
Dr Antonio, I hope you find and read this comment. I will like you to do a video on how to take proper care of our backs especially we software developers who spend lots of hours sitting down. Thanks

Very interesting. The way i was taught to do the final throw was to do it the same way as the other single loop throws. I see that you said to put it behind the suture when making the loop, instead of in front (near the wound midline) for the final one in order to "lock" the suture. This technique also makes you pull right two times in a row. Is there really any difference between just doing it the other way (in front of the suture and pulling to the left again, so alternating left right left right), the sutures still seem to hold pretty strong. Any literature on your technique. Thanks and much love.
