    I've got those red ones too and they really don't do much once you really mash your foot to the floor. Thanks for the heads up Andy. I just made a "Koozy" for my Smokey Joe Weber kettle with my 404. No trouble getting through some heavy waterproof coated cordura. That ol' girl has a lot of muscle.

      Yes, I hope he does well selling these and I sure agree with the 404. I sold a lot of that model to crafters who were making leather and heavy duty, carry bags, go bags, camping equipment, and so forth. One lady made very nice leather purses out of out of used leather. They all liked the 404

    Andy, thanks for this contact. I ordered the brown and blue ones from their Etsy store. They shipped them out to me within hours of receiving the order. They are definitely thicker than the red felt pads. I'll take one for a spin tomorrow.

      Good to hear they have good service, too. I hear they are making replacement felt oiling pads for the hooks on models 66/99 now.

    I have a singer 237 and I’m trying to get it ready to see and I am trying to thread my bobbin but my hand wheel doesn’t disengage it for me to put thread on my bobbin what would you recommend?

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  Год назад +1

      Be sure the machine is oiled properly. I have 21 videos for model 237 in a playlist that includes lubrication and a video completely about the whole bobbin winder system, Maybe one or more of the videos can help you.

      This Andy is sure that your Andy would prefer the Brown Wool Felt. Singer sometimes called it a "washer". I hope he sells enough to keep them on the market.

  • @heddybell
    @heddybell Год назад +1

    Thanks Andy. In what way do they enhance using a sewing machine? I know they are an important part of the machine but have never known the reason why! I know you will tell me. Those red felt ones are useless!

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  Год назад +2

      I think there are a few reasons. The main one is using the "washer" provides a slight tension on the thread as the take-up lever pulls the thread. That helps prevent slack between the spool and the tension assembly. Without a washer, the spool may keep spinning slightly after the sewing is stopped and the thread can wrap the spool and spin causing a tangle. The original washers were made with a small enough center hole to fit the pin snuggly. That way the washer does not spin, but only the spool. Spools were originally made of wood, and having a washer also helped protect the painted finish of the machine. Wool was the choice for washers because it has superior wear capability and won't stretch over time. Wool was also used for most oil wicks because it absorbs the oil and wears very well, often lasting the lifetime of the machine. IMO, even an old, worn, dusty wool washer works better than a brand new loose-fitting polyester one. I have cleaned many old felt washers by getting them wet, adding a drop of laundry soap, squeezing the washer a bit, and then rinsing. After it is dry again it has "fluffed up" nicely and works very well. Nice question and thanks for watching.

    I wonder if he could figure a way to make the oil wicks for the bobbin race on a Singer 66?

      Thanks for your interest Caroline. Yeah I think everybody hates that red polyester stuff. You'll have to contact the seller on eBay at the link I put in the description before the video. He mentioned he was ordering more of the wool. I believe he said black and a very light tan and maybe one other color. He is a viewer of my channel and had discussed the spool pins with me and said he was just going to figure a way to make wool ones. I said wow fantastic! If you get them on the market let me know and I'll give him a shout out. I'm sure he'd love to hear from you. Thanks for watching my channel and good luck
