Amazing believe to see a British guy talk all about Scandinavia. I’m an American who is also obsessed with Scandinavia one of the reasons is because I have Scandinavian ancestors
In Sweden every country and village had their own "folkdräkt", folk costume.
Ah thanks! Yeah it's such an interesting culture and such a beautiful part of the world! :D
@@allaboutscandinavia9779 very expensive, handmade and only used "for best".
A bunad costs like 60 000nok ++
My mum made her own.. Off and on.. took her 30 years ish.
Interesting. I didn't know about this false friend with Norwegian and Swedish.
In Swedish a Bonad is a piece of embroiled cloth usually hung on a wall as decoration. The traditional regional clothes are called "folkdräkt" (peoples dress) in Swedish
The bunad is a traditional costume. As can be said, today it is used as a party costume, for example for 17 May, Norway's national day. The bunad is made for both men and women, and as usual, the women's bunad is the one that is the most "decorated"! Much of the fabric in the bunad is made of wadding, which is made of thick wool like fabric. This often makes up the shirt and shawl and the men's jackets and trousers. BUT if you are going to buy a new one today, these are very expensive new, they quickly cost 4000-7000 pounds. And then shoes and silver are added! THAT is why many people get a bunad on the day they are confirmed. Because it is not uncommon to get up to 5,000-10,000 as a confirmation student. And then there are many who want something that really lasts, so there are many who inherit the bunade from their grandmother or mother, or grandfather or father.
Weddings, baptisme, jubelees, 17th of may, christmas and big avents.
Norway was a sovereign country around the 11th century (a bit before and a bit after), but through royal marriage, Norway was included in the Danish realm. Later on, because Denmark lost in the Napoleonic wars, they had to give away Norway to Sweden, which ruled Norway for almost 100 years. During this time, Norway, like many nations in Europe, went through a romanticism period. Basically a time of introspective, where Norwegians tried to find what made them Norwegians. Luckily, there was plenty of history to pick from.
The married/unmarried detail isn’t as big of a deal anymore. Some follow it, some do not. It’s also not necessarily a very visible detail, and even quite a few Norwegians aren’t aware that it’s a thing. With my bunad, it’s the hosiery color. Red for unmarried, black for married. Its not visible when standing still, and you’d have to know about it, as well as look for it. So it definitely doesn’t scream “unmarried!”. Since my bunad is black, as well as the shoes, I personally think it looks better with the red, and I’m not sure if I would change to black even if I were to get married 🤷🏼♀️
Norwegian bunads must be the most beautiful traditional gowns there is ?
BU- means ( place you live Eks. Here I put up a house and here i will BU (live).) adding NAD is just grammar to make very old word saying this is a gown that shows of where you live/ come from. It has roots several hundred years back.
"Everyone wears them on may 17". Thats not true at all. Sure, there are many, but theres also many without, wearing more common fancy clothing like.. Well, everywhere else. Especially men tends to wear suits instead of bunad. Its way more common.
There is a folk costume very different from the bunad, that it the "gakti", the folkloristic garment of the Sàmi minority up minority. Very decorative and no well for men as for women.
17.th of may .. I gues it happens, but women wear silver for .. .. alot. It it so is easy to steal.
No yet has the balls to steal .. Or I think .. you just dont do it. Any other day.. ok.. Just not that day. Might be because you cant sell the silver.. But dear me.. Caught doing that?
