  • This performance of Out There (by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz) was to demonstrate what I've been working on for the semester with my amazing voice teacher Stephen Mumbert. In this performance, I performed a piece I was working on (just like the rest of the class had to at least once (not once each, just once) during the three workshops we did) and I got some super understandable feedback for what I presented: wide vibrato and lack of variation in my acting hand gestures. SO happy when Dr. Smisek said my phrasing was good.
I performed this for the student recital as well (student recital is exactly what it sounds like: a music recital for the music students), but I won't post that. Instead, I'll tell you what happened. First off, I made multiple mistakes, but none of them made me stop then start mid-performance (so that's AMAZING). Second, the mistakes I made were multiple instances of cracking and failing to enter vibrato after holding out a note in straight tone. Doesn't mean there wasn't any vibrato at all, just clearly something I struggled with in that performance that I normally don't any other instance when I sing. The cracking I somewhat understand too because this song is just RIGHT at the ends of my upper voice. This story is to anyone who expects the most from their voice: sometimes, you'll get subpar moments like this and that's okay. No matter how difficult it is to accept (and I'm talking to myself as much as I am to you), there will always be performances where you mess up. The key when you make them is to just keep going, not letting it stop your performance AT ALL, and learning from it so you can either get back to where you were before vocally (like me right now) or use it to improve and do better next time. Hope this helps.
