  • This whole debate over whether dabbling is okay has given me a headache-- let's just try it for ourselves and decide! For me, I've always thought Italian sounded so beautiful, but I'm here to test out if I'm interested in studying it in the future. What do you think about dabbling? Let's discuss! Thank you so much for coming out to watch.

    Dabbling is totally healthy when done in moderation! It helps you stay motivated to maintain your language habits even if your motivation is waning. Go for it! Just don't dabble in too much at once (else, it's at your own risk!).

    1:53 that's it, that's my one and only issue with the idea of dabbling. people claiming they've learnt a language just cos they spent a week learning a few words and grammar rules. this video is actually dabbling done right. respect from Italy :)

    I am learning Spanish and Korean. Then I notice a lady at work who is Ukrainian and hasn’t learned English. I started to dabble in her language. The goal was for saying hello have a small conversation with her. Her response was so heart warming. Now she teaches me new words. She always thanks me for speaking to her in her language. Then I speak to a Ukrainian student in the hall who doesn’t speak English. I just said hello and he lit up like a light. Now he hugs me every time he sees me. For me, this is enough reason to dabble.

    Ciao Elysse! Great work so far - you probably realized this by now, stare (used to mean "to be") can only be paired with adverbs (bene/male) whereas if you are using an adjective to describe yourself then you have to use essere. So basically we use stare only to say "sto bene"/"sto male".
    Around 10:30 when you're trying to say "I hope you have a good day", you can say it a couple of ways:
    In Italian, when you say that you are "spending" a day, you use the verb passare.
    When you talk about a day (as in someone's experience during that day - it's a hard concept to explain in English) you use the term "giornata" instead of giorno, which is just the period of 24 hours. Same thing with evening, you use "serata".
    So, oggi ho passato la serata con un amico. = Today I spent the evening with a friend.
    Have a good day = Buona giornata! (This is wishing someone a good day). Works for talking to one as well as multiple people.
    or "Passa una bella giornata" (This is a command, the imperative tense) if talking to one person, "passate una bella giornata" if talking to multiple people.
    I'm not sure why you say "passa una bella giornata" as opposed to "...una buona giornata", it may just be a fixed phrase.
    When you want to say, "I HOPE you have a good evening", in Italian you have to use the subjunctive tense.
    Spero che passi una bella serata (speaking to one person)
    Spero che passiate una bella serata. (for multiple people)
    In Italian instead of saying "day three", it's better to say "third day", il terzo giorno, using ordinal numbers instead of cardinal numbers.

    Italian for me would be my travel language I don’t really have big goals for it. My biggest languages i want to use the most is Spanish, Portuguese, and Swahili.
    Italian and Zulu are my “just for fun” languages, nothing too serious.

    Your Italian accent is so good!
    I used to feel like I would know everything about the Italian grammar, because I’m a Spanish native speaker, but then I found there’s something called “Passato prossimo”. Yeah! It’s the kind of thing you learn how to use by using it, because Spanish doesn’t have that grammar structure. Idk if Portuguese shares that with Italian though.

    • @elyssespeaks
      @elyssespeaks  4 года назад +11

      Jorge Andrés Linares Guerra interesting!! i feel like grammar really distinguishes the romance languages when nothing else does.

    • @mep6302
      @mep6302 Год назад

      Passato prossimo doesn't exist in Spanish? Sorry but that's wrong. I'm a native Spanish speaker and the equivalent of passato prossimo does exist in Spanish.
      Examples:
      Lui *ha mangiato* una mela
      Él *ha comido* una manzana
      *Siamo stati* a Roma molte volte
      *Hemos estado* en Roma muchas veces
      The difference is that in Spanish we also have the past simple tense. Italian has it but people don't tend to use it that much. Especially in the north. In the south of Italy people use it much more.

    In some regions stare is used pretty much for every use of to be, but it's because of the dialect of that region. Same for what past tense to use: the northern regions pretty much always use the passato prossimo, even when recounting an historical event, while southern regions use passato remoto even to talk about their lunch

    • @mep6302
      @mep6302 Год назад +1

      Southern is better. I still can't believe northern italians want to impose their version of the language as the "standard"

    EU sei o que estava passando na sua mente, quando você fez esse vídeo. a nossa língua provém do Latim então cada idioma que vêm do latim são semelhantes, então você fica encontrando palavras iguais, isso meio que faz seu cérebro se perguntar, hey já vi essas palavras antes, já vi!!! ´´mas será no português ou espanhol, não lembro! vou revisar meu espanhol e português``. Eu sou brasileiro conheço as regras do Latim, imagina pra uma pessoa que não veio, Deve ser bastante difícil manter as línguas com as semelhanças vocálicas e escritas diferentes. Any plans to learn latin? I remember in the movie Back to School, Robert Downey Jr. played a freshman registering for classes, and he mentions he got latin and ancient greek, but they didn't have Sanskrit and that blew his whole dead languages motif. I started as an italian major in college, but switched to German because it seemed there were more opportunities with that. But Italian will always be my first love, and still watch RAI channels on Mobdro so I can get my Italian news and variety shows

    As for a trooper I up the playback speed so you're speedtalking ;). I think on one hand as someone who's studied other languages if you get a tutor or language partner they'll be impressed with how quick you pick stuff up. On the other hand you're not as likely to put so much time into this language either since well you have lots of other languages already. I studied lots of Japanese and finally I'm studying Korean. It's so terrible how when I try speaking Korean (which I'm bad at), I'll say Japanese words without even realizing it. I hope that doesn't happen to much to you.
