It's helpful but...not what I was looking for. This video is EXACTLY what I needed! Now I feel like I can get the most from my lessons without wasting money or time! Thanks so so much :)
I just got pre-approved to be an italki community tutor :) I hope my application gets fully accepted. This video was actually super helpful, I’ve been an italki student before so I really feel this is good for a teacher to be reminded of a students needs and perspectives. Great video :)
Marie Hornung I’m happy for you! teaching honestly only feels like a job half of the time, i have some great laughs with my students :) and I agree, you definitely need experience on the learner side first! good luck with your teaching ~
that language mode switch in the brain is quite normal. I’ve spoken French for forty years now and French people even think I’m from France - except that it takes me about three days to warm up enough speak at that level. If I try to speak French on an English-mode day, I sound like my brain is connected to dial-up. Yeh, it really feels like there’s a switch - an old bakelite one which needs some force to get it to flip. So, you’re probably not a robot. (Either that or I’m a robot too) Curiously though, with other languages which I started learning as an adult (currently feeding seven of them...) it doesn’t seem to take nearly as much of a warm-up to switch modes - a couple of videos or a podcast, job done..
I've been using italki for about 5 years too. I agree absolutely with all the points including mental prep before starting a lesson and working on lesson corrections. One further point to be aware of though is that not all countries/cities have good internet connectivity. This makes a massive difference to a lesson for both the student and teacher. This again may be reflected in the lessons to student ratio or lesson comments. I sort of know which countries/cities tend to have good/poor connectivity. It's just an important factor to be aware of. It's a shame there is an element of chance in this when booking lessons but that's again where trial lessons could be handy.

What I need is a video that takes a new student through what you've covered but then shows the first time student how to set up the speaker, microphone, and other things to join the class. Today in my first lesson on italki I wasn't able to do that. Also, how does one get to Dashboard? A step by step video of all the necessary steps would be a great help. Thank you so much. If someone reads this post and has any suggestions, I'd appreciate them.
Hi! This is more of a technology question than lesson question. I just choose a quiet place for my lessons and then just use the laptop speaker and microphone. No special set-up required at all.

I've been learning French for around three months now, and I'm pretty confident that my reading and writing abilities are around upper beginner level. To be honest, I've been avoiding speaking at all costs because French just feels awkward in my mouth. I keep trying to recall how I got the confidence to speak in other languages I've learned, but I've never had this same problem before. Can you talk a little bit about how you get past the "mental block" that comes with speaking?
brelove1414 thank you for watching! for me, i feel like i just wouldn’t get that much out of it as a beginner UNLESS you take classes as a nonnative speaker. you’re going to need explanations sometimes that natives can’t give. the confidence of speaking comes with knowing your way around the basics, so i’ve never tried lessons as a beginner.

One of the tips I have heard people say is to focus on the lip movement of a native speaker. I personally haven't tried this but I have heard many success stories from people trying to read lips to understand the spoken language.
Whats the point learning all these useless languages when they are not going to benefit you after death. The only language that is going to benefit the whole human beings is ARABIC language in which we are all going to talk on the day of Judgement. And to God Almighty Allah (SWT) we are all returning soon inshaAllah Ameen.
