I have terrible anxiety. I usually destroy people in friendlies, as in I rarely even lose games. However, come time for bracket, I will often get destroyed by those same people, just because the nerves hit me so bad. I've found music, eating before hand, having a good amount of rest, smiling a lot, and forcing yourself to breathe to be the best solutions.
I really agree the first tournament I went to I was so nervous I was at like %40 of my ability and it was so bad my hands were litteraly shaking to the point I would accidentally push the wrong buttons on my controller. It's gotten better since but it was pretty bad when I started...
I won an in - game Rocket League tournament yesterday, and I went from looking like a Champ 2 in the beginning, to lookin like a bronze in game 3 overtime in the finals 😅
solid life advice. melee players are some of the most introspective and thoughtful people. because they have been forced to refine themselves to such a degree to attain this level of success in a competative game.
I play a different game competitively but this is some good advice. Nerves are completely normal. Convince yourself you can win, convince yourself you are better then the person opposite you, show up thinking you're the man and it will show in your gameplay.
For me, I spent so much of my tournament experiences losing sets that I don't feel bad about lost sets anymore. I go into tournaments expecting, "Yeah this guys could get a random 2-0 on me, whatever" and just focus on what I can do better in the set while I'm playing it
NRJee Nah you just blank your mind and play intuitively and observant. I guess it also helps to think of the matchup strategies and possibilities abit beforehand so they're within your awareness. Aware of the possibilities of your opponent, but open to whats actually happening. Open to wjats actually happening is important. The knowledge isnt there so you can ignore whats infront of you and read things that aren't happen or strategies you've studied but your opponent isn't using. Its there to allow you to comprehend and mentally interact with whats happening. Increase your understanding of strategies tactics situations, increase the options you have available to you through analysis and practice. Then you can act more creatively and express yourself. Express your understanding.
I tried believing in myself a long time ago, thinking I could fly out of the top of a tree. Fucked myself up pretty good. Now every time I try, my subconscious over writes it saying, "no you can't dumbass!".
Lost but it was 4-5, set could have gone either way I just made bad decisions in game 8 and 9. I am now a little more comfortable being on a stream and will rewatch my set and learn from it.
I think my issue is kind of the opposite, anytime I get close to beating someone who is higher ranked than me in my local scene I don't think "what if I lose" I think "what if I win?" And then I think about how great it would be if I beat this person who's better than me and how awesome it would be which distracts me from the game and puts pressure on me so I get nervous and play worse and ultimately lose
I had my first tournament 2 days ago. It was a first to 5, and the score was 1 to 4, my favor. I was confident that I could do it. I was still nervous though. I dropped one game " Ok ok I can still do this" and then I drop 2 and I start getting nervous. I lost a third and at this point I was shaking. And then as In the final game, I chocked and lost. I wasn't that nervous in the earlier games.

Express your understanding against an accurate mental understanding of each individual opponent. As accurate as you're capable of understanding anyways.
Hmm also you don't really 'blank' your mind. You just observe and act on what knowledge you do have. If you are unable to do something or understand something you mentally note that too. And you observe how you're outplayed or killed and determine why so you can be aware of that as the match goes on.
But.. between the idea of a picture of you winning from beforehand, and the other idea of just thinking about nothing... what would you choose? I guess long term is more for the first option but during a game what you do? or maybe it depends on the situation?
I think great people share a few things in common. One thing is an "irrational" belief that THEY can achieve their dream. I don't care much for cloathing companies, but I've always liked Nike... Just do it! How else, right?
I used to believe in myself, then I lost over and over, so now I don't. the plus side is I don't get nervous anymore. Used to think I was better than I am, so I always had something to prove.
"To be a really good player, you need to be a fucking idiot"

yeah you're spot on. I've done it for years, and it's hard to get over the "what might happen" feeling.

Armada is bringing out some spiritual concepts. How RAD!
I won an in - game Rocket League tournament yesterday, and I went from looking like a Champ 2 in the beginning, to lookin like a bronze in game 3 overtime in the finals 😅

Such inspiration, not only for melee but for everything you feel like doing.

I never would've thought he got nervous

I thought armada would have it the worst because he has to keep up his status of the best

me watching this before I do an FT5 on someone's stream, hoping the community doesn't rip me a new one if I fuck up.

Shadowwind4 That is me. I always play worse when I'm winning.
All I do is pretend I'm either doing simple friendlies or practicing with my trainer.
thank you!
First step for me is to actually find a tourney to go to :(
GammaDelta I live on a very secluded rock, can't find any tournaments

So, just ask myself "what would Goku do?"

It's also an aquired state of mind combined with a feeling. It's hard to share just playing expressively and open with people through text.
