Even if she tried to rewrite the song to remove the mattress lyric, the whole concept of the song is problematic by today’s standards.

The re-recordings are providing such a great opportunity for “newer” swifties to get into her older music and I’m so grateful. I have been a fan since 1989 and kinda dragged on really exploring her earlier works. Though I’ve enjoyed them since a little before the re-recordings, I never got into 1-4 as much as the later ones until Fearless TV and Red TV and it feels like getting to experience those albums for the first time with everyone else and it’s so intense. I’ve really got those two albums at the forefront of my mind now, Red has outranked so many other albums for me since TV came out and I’ve grown so so fond of Fearless which I don’t think would have happened if it wasn’t for the re-recordings. So yeah! This is such an amazing time to be a swiftie. That makes me really excited for Speak Now TV to get to relate to it properly and I’m so 👀 anticipating Dear John TV to K*LL ME DEAD I can’t wait tbh 🙏

I’m a pretty recent Swiftie (long time casual fan though), so Red TV has been a pretty fun experience for me. For Fearless TV, I was only especially familiar with the biggest hits off of Fearless, whereas for Red TV I knew all the original recordings really well, so it was much more intense to listen to TV for the first time, as well as the vaults - higher highs and lower lows. I’ve loved how Red TV release weekend really felt like a celebration of that album; so good to see queen Taylor riding hard for ATW and the record as a whole.

Hi. Sorry in advance for the long post. Enjoying all your recent content and wanted to tell you I think you are really funny and insightful. You asked about those of us who weren't fans during the original Red era and I am one. I was a late swiftie. I was aware of her singles up until Reputation era and then I decided to download the Rep album and finally realized what I had been missing. It's amazing for me that she is re-recording these earlier works. I get to experience the first five albums as new works now, in real time with the rest of the fandom, and the major bonus is her improved vocals (I think the youthfulness of her voice on the first few albums is what kept me from delving into her catalog sooner). Obviously the vault tracks are another huge bonus. I've seen some long-term swifties say that they're getting used to the changes on her re-recorded singles, and I hope that happens for you too...not because I need everyone to have a positive opinion on everything she does; that is not possible or even something I expect of myself. I have tracks I just don't care for. Stay stay stay is just ok for me, and tbh I don't really like the two Ed Sheeran collabs that much (they both have high points and low points for me, but I know I will be skipping both most of the time). Message In a Bottle is very sweet and catchy but lacks the lyrical depth I look for from her at this point. The Very First Night is better but does not compare to 22 or IKYWT or WANEGBT in terms of pop bangers. Having said all of that I have enjoyed this re-recorded album so much. I adore Nothing New. Lyrics, melody, another great bridge...I like Phoebe Bridgers on it too. Her voice is different enough from Taylor's that I think they compliment each other well, and I like the dynamics suggested in her inviting a popular, respected, younger female artist to join on this track about feeling insecure that she might be supplanted. Forever Winter is beautiful too; the mental health aspects have been discussed by others (with respect to her friend who passed away). "I'd take that bomb in your head and disarm it" is incredible songwriting to me. Anyway, enjoy all the new content. I'm excited for whatever comes next, and realizing it really could be anything. She might put out another re-recording, or a new album, or a re-recording of her Christmas songs. Who really knows. I have to say though that one of the bright spots for me during this pandemic has been the joyful deluge of new TS music. I know this is mostly about her artistic freedom, and reclaiming ownership of her work, but it feels also like she is working extra hard to bring us swifties new music during this miserable time, and I really respect that.

I tend to agree with this ranking of Forever Winter. I really want to like it more; I think the writing is beautiful and I love the concept, so it’s difficult for me to put my finger on why this song doesn’t quite hit the mark for me. I think the production doesn’t match the song. The lyrics read like a fairly desperate plea to someone going through a life-threatening mh crisis ‘my voice come out begging/screaming’, but the production sounds very sweet; it’s pretty, it’s wistful, it’s romantic, it’s a little maudlin. I think I would like this song a lot more if it had production more like folklore/evermore/Nothing New, or perhaps like Breathe for an earlier example. It’s a shame, because I do think the instrumentation of Forever Winter is genuinely beautiful, it’s just that it doesn’t match the song for me; it doesn’t help convey the message of the lyrics.
@@jimbob2427 this could have been the intent, and Taylor is great at putting together a sad book (eg DBATC, TVFN). Gonna get over you by Sara Bareilles is another good example of this. But the production on Forever Winter sounds romantic and wistful to me (especially the horns in the interludes) which I don’t think especially works with the desperately sad and increasingly urgent lyrics.
All Too Well 10 min version and Nothing New are the two stand outs on RED TV for me.....Nothing New...I have no words...So yes if you decided to do a just Nothing New video....That would be me on cloud 9 :):)

But Treacherous is my absolute stan song on the album apart from all too well; and I also think come back be here, i bet you think about me are absolute standouts. But every ed sheeran song is absolutely cringe to me (and yes, i used to be a massive fan of his back in the day, like everybody else). 22 is literally to Wish version of New Romantics, Red is fun I guess but not so smart compared to her other songs, and miab and tvfn are so annoying 🙈 anyway, love your ranking videos even if I don't agree with you. I really liked the ATW10 commentary on your podcast, where you guys discussed how ATW10 gives so much more context to the whole album - eg I’ve been thinking a lot about Madeline’s comment about revisiting WANEGBT after ATW10 and realising that, although WANEGBT is such a tongue in cheek song, the relationship Taylor’s describing isn’t actually very funny. It might be fun to revisit a full full ranking, masters and TVs, once all the TV albums are released. It would be interesting to know how your opinions of the Red vaults change over time. I also agreed with the Nothing New commentary on your podcast ep that that song really benefitted from being released a decade after being written, and that is probably wouldn’t have been well received on the original Red record.

I joined the fandom in 2019 and I didn’t really listen to the first 5 albums that much except for maybe a handful of songs before the rr because Taylor’s younger voice hurt my head a little bit so I’m in love with the rr because they’re with her more mature vocals which I love so much so I’m not super nitpicky about the differences (except for the handful of songs I did listen to like style for example because style tv is just absolutely DISGUSTINGLY BAD) because most of these songs are almost like new to me so personally the only “stolen versions” I listen to are better than revenge because that fuck ass lyrics change totally ruined the song (which is weird because before the tv I wasn’t that into better then revenge like I’ve listened to it and liked it but I wasn’t it’s number one stan) and like I said style because the tv is ABSOLUTELY GARBAGE and style is one of my top favorite Taylor songs

I'm happy to have the new one however it just doesn't hit as hard as the OG. She sounds emotional in the original.

I personally really prefer the re-recorded i knew you were trouble. The original was always one of my least favorites but what the re-record does (and this is the same for 22 in my opinion as well) is takes out the slightly nasal quality and for ikywt specifically she isn’t screaming this time. As someone with issues around sound the fact that she isn’t nasally or screaming in these songs makes me able to actually listen to them without having a panic attack. I think it’s so interesting how the way our brains work can affect our opinions so much about art.
Love it. My choices pretty similar actually but I do like Run maybe more. It’s not terribly complex but once again the queen of armories and melodies just wrote something my ears love to hear. She is in Yelling, not cause it’s a banger but because it sounds so pretty to me. Oh and I was never really a Last Time fan, IMZo girl got a glow up and one of my least faves went up to yelling or Wow.

I was eight when the original red came out so I didn’t truly appreciate it and I was still busy being a hardcore Fearless Stan but the re recordings made me seriously re evaluate the album and see it as the classic that it is. Truly incredible. (I even enjoyed girl at home, I thought it was really bizzare but I kinda vibe with the new style) And oh my gosh it sounds so good on vinyl, my copy just arrived and I was blown away. After the complete quality disaster that was the Folklore vinyl which looked really pretty but had complete garbage pressing quality and mastering I was really worried about Red TV but it fucking delivered.

Hi. Sorry in advance for the long post. Enjoying all your recent content and wanted to tell you I think you are really funny and insightful.
You asked about those of us who weren't fans during the original Red era and I am one. I was a late swiftie. I was aware of her singles up until Reputation era and then I decided to download the Rep album and finally realized what I had been missing.
It's amazing for me that she is re-recording these earlier works. I get to experience the first five albums as new works now, in real time with the rest of the fandom, and the major bonus is her improved vocals (I think the youthfulness of her voice on the first few albums is what kept me from delving into her catalog sooner). Obviously the vault tracks are another huge bonus.
I've seen some long-term swifties say that they're getting used to the changes on her re-recorded singles, and I hope that happens for you too...not because I need everyone to have a positive opinion on everything she does; that is not possible or even something I expect of myself. I have tracks I just don't care for. Stay stay stay is just ok for me, and tbh I don't really like the two Ed Sheeran collabs that much (they both have high points and low points for me, but I know I will be skipping both most of the time). Message In a Bottle is very sweet and catchy but lacks the lyrical depth I look for from her at this point. The Very First Night is better but does not compare to 22 or IKYWT or WANEGBT in terms of pop bangers.
Having said all of that I have enjoyed this re-recorded album so much. I adore Nothing New. Lyrics, melody, another great bridge...I like Phoebe Bridgers on it too. Her voice is different enough from Taylor's that I think they compliment each other well, and I like the dynamics suggested in her inviting a popular, respected, younger female artist to join on this track about feeling insecure that she might be supplanted.
Forever Winter is beautiful too; the mental health aspects have been discussed by others (with respect to her friend who passed away). "I'd take that bomb in your head and disarm it" is incredible songwriting to me.
Anyway, enjoy all the new content. I'm excited for whatever comes next, and realizing it really could be anything. She might put out another re-recording, or a new album, or a re-recording of her Christmas songs. Who really knows. I have to say though that one of the bright spots for me during this pandemic has been the joyful deluge of new TS music. I know this is mostly about her artistic freedom, and reclaiming ownership of her work, but it feels also like she is working extra hard to bring us swifties new music during this miserable time, and I really respect that.
Although I’m not the biggest fan of Starlight (it’s cute and fun though), I am loving the redemption you’ve given her since you slammed that track on your 2012 podcast episode. It’s so good to see opinions evolving and changing over time, even from our Swiftie vets.

I tend to agree with this ranking of Forever Winter. I really want to like it more; I think the writing is beautiful and I love the concept, so it’s difficult for me to put my finger on why this song doesn’t quite hit the mark for me.
I think the production doesn’t match the song. The lyrics read like a fairly desperate plea to someone going through a life-threatening mh crisis ‘my voice come out begging/screaming’, but the production sounds very sweet; it’s pretty, it’s wistful, it’s romantic, it’s a little maudlin. I think I would like this song a lot more if it had production more like folklore/evermore/Nothing New, or perhaps like Breathe for an earlier example. It’s a shame, because I do think the instrumentation of Forever Winter is genuinely beautiful, it’s just that it doesn’t match the song for me; it doesn’t help convey the message of the lyrics.
@@jimbob2427 this could have been the intent, and Taylor is great at putting together a sad book (eg DBATC, TVFN). Gonna get over you by Sara Bareilles is another good example of this. But the production on Forever Winter sounds romantic and wistful to me (especially the horns in the interludes) which I don’t think especially works with the desperately sad and increasingly urgent lyrics.
All Too Well 10 min version and Nothing New are the two stand outs on RED TV for me.....Nothing New...I have no words...So yes if you decided to do a just Nothing New video....That would be me on cloud 9 :):)

I really liked the ATW10 commentary on your podcast, where you guys discussed how ATW10 gives so much more context to the whole album - eg I’ve been thinking a lot about Madeline’s comment about revisiting WANEGBT after ATW10 and realising that, although WANEGBT is such a tongue in cheek song, the relationship Taylor’s describing isn’t actually very funny.
It might be fun to revisit a full full ranking, masters and TVs, once all the TV albums are released. It would be interesting to know how your opinions of the Red vaults change over time. I also agreed with the Nothing New commentary on your podcast ep that that song really benefitted from being released a decade after being written, and that is probably wouldn’t have been well received on the original Red record.

I joined the fandom in 2019 and I didn’t really listen to the first 5 albums that much except for maybe a handful of songs before the rr because Taylor’s younger voice hurt my head a little bit so I’m in love with the rr because they’re with her more mature vocals which I love so much so I’m not super nitpicky about the differences (except for the handful of songs I did listen to like style for example because style tv is just absolutely DISGUSTINGLY BAD) because most of these songs are almost like new to me so personally the only “stolen versions” I listen to are better than revenge because that fuck ass lyrics change totally ruined the song (which is weird because before the tv I wasn’t that into better then revenge like I’ve listened to it and liked it but I wasn’t it’s number one stan) and like I said style because the tv is ABSOLUTELY GARBAGE and style is one of my top favorite Taylor songs

3. I personally really prefer the re-recorded i knew you were trouble. The original was always one of my least favorites but what the re-record does (and this is the same for 22 in my opinion as well) is takes out the slightly nasal quality and for ikywt specifically she isn’t screaming this time. As someone with issues around sound the fact that she isn’t nasally or screaming in these songs makes me able to actually listen to them without having a panic attack. I think it’s so interesting how the way our brains work can affect our opinions so much about art.

Love it. My choices pretty similar actually but I do like Run maybe more. It’s not terribly complex but once again the queen of armories and melodies just wrote something my ears love to hear. She is in Yelling, not cause it’s a banger but because it sounds so pretty to me. Oh and I was never really a Last Time fan, IMZo girl got a glow up and one of my least faves went up to yelling or Wow.

I was eight when the original red came out so I didn’t truly appreciate it and I was still busy being a hardcore Fearless Stan but the re recordings made me seriously re evaluate the album and see it as the classic that it is. Truly incredible. (I even enjoyed girl at home, I thought it was really bizzare but I kinda vibe with the new style) And oh my gosh it sounds so good on vinyl, my copy just arrived and I was blown away. After the complete quality disaster that was the Folklore vinyl which looked really pretty but had complete garbage pressing quality and mastering I was really worried about Red TV but it fucking delivered.
Oh wow I’m so curious to listen to it on vinyl now
