- Are Mosquito Bits safe for organic vegetable gardening? Is this registered pesticide harmful if ingested?
The active ingredient in Mosquito Bits is Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, also known as BTI or BT. Many organic gardeners use this to eradicate fungus gnats or mosquito larvae in their gardens and/or ponds. When I saw all of the scary warning labels on the package, I was concerned. Can I use this on vegetable plants that I am eating? Here's what I found out...

Thank you so so much for all your hard work in researching this! I was so skeptical about using mosquito bits but your detailed explanation has cleared my doubts. Appreciate it. 🙏🏽Thanks! 🙂
Glad it was helpful! :) Good luck with the gnats
Yes thank you ! Ignore the message above asking if your going to call the company. You stated you did research and you emailed the company. You even showed the email response. I did the same research before watching your video. Thank you for the confirmation.
Thank you for all your time in the research. This is one of the most direct easy straight forward video I have found!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I definitely went down the research rabbit-hole for this one :)
I just went through this with my first cowboy hat. I saw the cancer and reproductive harm label after buying it and called them back and they were like, " yeah if you smoke it"...
Finally, a video that answers all the questions. Thanks! I subbed.
Awesome, you did a great job on this! I was kind of wondering the same thing after reading the label.
Thank you for the effort you've put into this! I was wondering about the same thing!
Thank you, I had the same hesitancy. It came highly recommended, but I needed reassurance and additional info.
Thanks for doing all the legwork. I was hesitant for the same reasons you were. I will be trying out this product.
What a helpful and useful info! I truly appreciate all your time and effort to do this research!
Thank you very much for all your research and sharing the information. This is my first time starting plants indoors over the fall/winter and I have battled this issue for about a month.
Thanks a ton for this research! I've seen lots of scary comments from people on the internet about these in addition to the giant warning label on the package. Nice to know these are safe to use. Great video!
I tried beneficial nematodes which did help indoors.
You are so thorough and I’d truly appreciate all your hours that I got to see in this short video! You deserve an award thank you thank you I definitely need to treat my indoor herb garden!
Thank you so much! I bought the mosquito bits then read the label and freaked out lol I grow herbs and veggies indoors and outdoors on my balcony and recently developed a fungus gnat issue.
We have pretty much the same setup then! Balconies are great, but at the same time, when an insect finds one plant... it spreads to all of them. Hope you were able to get rid of them!!
Thank you for doing this research and making the effort for us! I got mine at home depot and they definitely help
I really appreciate the amount of work that went into this video. Well done, Nicole! I was getting ready to treat some of my indoor plants with Mosquito bits, so I thought I would see what I could find on youtube. Your video popped up, and I'm glad that I watched it. I really don't have much time to watch many videos, so for that reason, I don't subscribe to many channels. I just subscribed to yours though. Thanks again for the great video.
Thank U for your extensive research; I've been debating on getting some for use in my little no till outside garden because the mosquitoes are horrible here in SW Oklahoma this year with the rain we've been having. Greatly appreciated n you've got a new subscriber🙂
Thank you so much! I have so many plants, edible and decorative, and they all need this. You’re awesome!
Exactly the information I was look for. Thank you so much!!!
Thank you Nicole! It did seem very odd as well, almost as if they were making the warnings for mosquitoes LOL but now that you've explained it I feel much more comfortable using this on my vegetables as well. Happy gardening!
Thank you for doing the research and posting this video for the benefit of fellow gardeners :)
Amazing! Thank you SO much for all of your research
TY so much for this clarification. I planted some potatoes that had sprouted and had the granules in my soul mix. I super appreciate you researching this and providing the education pertaining to it.
Thank you so much for your video and the research that went into it.
Thank you for this information and your research and effort. I spilt some on my carpet, swept it up with a hand brush and then I read that label and panicked! So really, thank you. ☺️🇬🇧
thank you for this video! this is exactly the info i needed right now
Thank you SO MUCH! I've been trying for days to find a straightforward answer and had no luck until I found your video. Thanks for putting in all the time and effort to help us out!
Glad it helped! And I hope by now you were able to get rid of your fungus gnats!
Thanks for doing this. I had all these same questions and concerns.
My pleasure! Glad it helped
Thank you, Nicole. I have watched this video four times now, and I am finally starting to use it. I have a serious infestation going on, right now. I also saw the other video. Just double-checking before I start using this on my vegetables.
Thank you for making this video and doing extensive research! This answered every burning question I had!
Awesome! I’m glad it helped ☺️
Nicole thank you so much for your research. I was wondering, but after I sprayed my veggies🤦🏽♀️ and was hoping I wouldn't have to get rid of all my new seedlings. Now I know. 👩🏾🌾
Thank you so much for doing reseach for this product. I also had a fungus gnat problem, your info helped alot.
Thank you for your research and sharing it. that’s just the info I was looking for!
I now have to find if the soaking in a sock thing is necessary. I have plastic over my garden so I don’t have to weed it and I just need to stop the mosquitoes from breeding in the pools of water. I kind of think I can just sprinkle mosquito bits around in the puddles but this sock soak thing seems important.
Oh thank you for studying this. This helps so much
Glad to help!
Wow, thank you so much for your thorough research! It's often quite hard to find the answers that you're looking for, even for simple questions. You've saved me a lot of time!
She researched it by calling the people who sell it. How can this be a good idea?
This is the BEST information I've found on BTI mosquito bits. Thank you so much. I've done some research as well, and never thought to just contact the company, because at the end of the day I wasn't sure how to properly use the bits for fungus gnat control. Just sprinkling some on top of the soil before watering, and doing so every 3 weeks didn't seem to work super well. I ended up literally covering the top soil of my plants with this stuff and leaving it there for a couple weeks and it's done a great job in obliterating them over the course of a few weeks. Seems my approach might have been overkill but my plants are all completely happy lol
This was super helpful, thanks so much! I got nervous seeing the warnings this gives me relief in using it on my tomatoes. Thank you!
What a fantastic video! Extremely thoughtful tenacious research, culminated in a beautifully thorough presentation of the facts which will save many of us from the scourge of fungus gnats. Massive accolades and thanks to you Nicole!!!
Thank you Tim! I'm glad this was helpful :) I did my best to learn everything I could about these annoying gnats
Thank you for doing this research for us!
Thank you for this information Nicole! 👍
Thank you very much. I wanted this precise information!
Thank you so much for this video. I too read the back of the package and was very concerned. The back of the package made me feel like oh s**** I just bought super toxic mosquito bits. I actually just left a message for the company before I found your video. It cleared up my concern, I also have been doing a balcony garden.🌱🍓
Thank you, using it now in my plant pots.
Thank you Nicole! Excited to (hopefully) solve our fungus gnat problem today!
Sure thing! Remember it's not an overnight solution, it takes time to break their cycle.
And thank you for the advice 👍 I really appreciate it I was quite unsure about how too use my bits just about lost my bits 🤯 same deal read label and was like what ‼️‼️
Thank you so much for this!
Your video cleared up all my questions. You had more information than any other video. Thank You.
aww thanks, I'm glad it was worth watching :)
Thanks for your help!!
thank you so much! i couldn't find any information about safety for edible plants. all i found were a bunch of opinions and most of them were based on paranoia rather than actual data.
Thanks for your research!😊
Very Helpful - same questions I had about it. Thank you very much.
Oh well, you found yours in Home depot and I had to order it from the US over here in Greece, since there is nowhere to be found in Europe! Thanks for the video! It's very helpful!
Wow, strange that they don’t have it there!
Came to the Internet to research this, and am so grateful to you for all you have figured out and the work you went to! Thank you thank you! I brought my herb plants in from the garden in the fall so that I could overwinter them, hopefully, inside. But, I have fungus gnats in some house plants and used bits on my herbs to control the bugs. Was left wondering if I had just done a dumb thing, rendering my herbs inedible. I didn’t think I would find any info on the net, and was beyond grateful to find your video! You’ve helped a lot of people… Thank you!
This exact topic has been bothering me. I use mosquito bits for houseplants, but I recently started growing herbs outdoors. I don't even want to use sticky traps out there for fear that I'll accidentally trap a beneficial insect, so I've been torn about how to deal with it. Thanks for sharing this. I feel slightly better about inevitably having to use Mosquito Bits on my herb plants.
Thank you so much for doing this research! This information was really helpful to me :)
You are so welcome!
Very helpful & greatly appreciated! Thank you so much!!
Thanks so much for this. I put mosquito bits on my hanging tomato plants, and I suddenly remembered the warnings on the label, so you've put my mind at rest.
Glad to hear that!
You sound like me! I do deep dives into things that drives people crazy like my husband but I find out what I need to know and not go blindly. It all made perfect sense and you're worth your weight in gold/platinum. I've been using it for years and it never disappoints me. This is a great company and I think they could save the world if we let them. lol I do the soaking method and apply weekly then bi-weekly after for my flowers. However I'm wanting to plant some radishes for the first time ever gardening veggies so although I know MB's are completely safe, I still had to double check. You validated what I knew and relieved my mind 100%. Thank you Nicole, you're the best. Now I'm off to plant my radishes!
Thank you, this was extremely helpful
Thank you so much!
Thank you! I just bought the mosquito bits to combat a gnat infestation and covered myself from head to toe to avoid touching or inhaling the stuff lol 😂 but now I know that they’re safe. Thank you!
Glad I could help! Let me know if you were able to get rid of them:)
This was SO helpful! Great job
Thank you :) I'm glad it was helpful!
Thanks for doing the hard work for us!
Hope it helps 🙏
Thank you!!!
Great information,much appreciated 👏🏾 👍🏾 👌🏾 🙏🏾
thank you very much for this!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
I bought it a few years ago and didn’t use it for the same reason as you, I actually find it rather hilarious we all reacted to this product the same way. It actually is the only thing besides the shredded glass mix that works. I think people always recommend DE because they have heard others say it, even though it’s completely worthless for gnats
Yeah I feel you. I bought DE because I heard other people talking about it. And I was sorely disappointed when the gnats were still alive. Plus, the white mess looked rather ugly.
Picking some up tomorrow at Menards, thanks for the video.
Sure thing!
Thank you !
Thanks. I was already using it in my pepper plants, but since we now have a huge infestation from house plants, I decided to just confirm what I already knew about it being harmless to humans and found this video. I learned that I've been doing it all wrong. I've been putting the bits on top of the soil and watering them every few days. I'm using too many of them this way. Thanks again.
sure thing! This was a game changer for me too. I would let the bits soak in the water overnight and then water my plants in the morning.
Spot on! I have watched so many videos and read many articles regarding fungus gnats and BTI over the last couple of years and your information is exactly what I have found. The letter from the company is the cherry on the top, thank you for sharing.
In recent years I have been fascinated with Bokashi composting and Korean natural farming. I have learned much about the subject and have been harvesting the Lactobacillus bacteria from rice water and inoculating a substrate with it for use in my bins. I am now wondering if it is possible, having just bought a large bag of Mosquito Bits, if it is possible to culture and grow the BTI in the product and make an indefinite supply.
You are awesome! I came here specifically because I was about to use the Mosquito bits and saw those warnings and dropped the bag and rushed into the bathroom to take my clothes off and wash my hands 😅 I hadn't even opened the bag yet
Thank you so much. I had all the same questions but another video said it was safe. I followed the directions and placed the bits on top of the soil and water . Well, I thought is was working but now they seem to have multiplied!!! I'm at my wit's end! I've tried everything!
I would try letting them soak in the water and then watering with the BTI water. Seems to be more effective than placing the bits on the soil. I would also recommend putting a few sticky traps around the plants to catch some of the adults.
@@NicolesCorner Thanks!
Thank u!!
Thank you so much for this!! I seriously love you right now!!!🤣😍 Now to go get my Mosquito Bits!! Lolol🤦🏻♀️
Thank you! Is the Amazon link an affiliate link? I'd be happy to use it as a thank you for your info and hard work researching!
Thank you thank you thank you!!!
Happy to help!
Thank you for this video! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Thank you for all your research ❤ 💓 ♥ 💗 I appreciate you ❤ 🙏 💗
Aww thank you! ☺️
Great video, very informative!
Thank you for this! I accidentally touched the granules while gardening and I feared the worst
Thanks!
Besides the bits I also use sticky cards to cut down on the adults. I dont normally have house plants except during winter months when I over winter cuttings and seedling witch will go outside come spring so yes I deal with the gnats and this is my first time at using the bits to see if they help, time will tell.
thank you very much :)
Thank you so much! Same exact reasons you mentioned and everyone else! I almost returned the product! ha ha
thank you very much❤
Great work love the vids!!!✌
Thank you! 😊
Excellent research. When watering with it can you get it on the vegetable plant?
hahaha, thank you so much for sharing, I've been nervous about touching it for a while now lol finally can relax 😁
These are incredible. I have a bioactive ball python enclosure that got absolutely overrun with fungus gnats. Killed them all in a week, and they never came back. Snake remained perfectly healthy as well:)
I love you, thank you
Very helpful, thanks for sharing.
Glad it was helpful! :)
I grow nip for my cats and they love it
great info. thanks
That's interesting! I just read a post from back in 2013 in a forum where everyone was wondering the same thing as you. The question to the very same company was why all the warning labels for the bits and what was the difference between their mosquito dunks vs. mosquito bits? The company's email response was that the "dunks" were approved for organic agriculture production and the "bits" were not. Some of the posters said because of this difference in the product they just broke up the dunks and used them instead for food production. So I wonder, what changed in the formula since then?
Thank you, thank you, thank you…I was just about to embark on the same kind of research journey you did. Thank you for sharing the info and the knowledge you obtained. Just a quick question, if you happen to have researched this question. Why throw out / discard the bits after removing them from the water. When using the bits to treat ponds for mosquitos the granules dissolve over time. So why discard them? Why can’t they be reused?
Thanks I was wondering the same thing. It's like it's safe for everything but if you inhale it or it gets on your skin R.I.P. dude lol.
Also because my container vegetables do better in wet soil. And the alternative solutions called for letting the soil dry out which works for regular plant but not for vegetables.
Loved, can you use this to white flies?
