    Thanks Dave, that saved me a few £££! The hinge I bought from EBay slightly different as it did away with the spring, instead put a small weight on the underside of the flap, which helps it fall back down

    Did this repair today. Probably bought the part 2 years ago… Was pretty easy. I didn’t put the hinge together before gluing it so getting the spring reinstalled was a bit of a hassle but with some persistence I figured out a method that worked. Didn’t have to worry about getting glue on the cover…

    As far as the cost from MB I have this story from 2021. I went to the dealer to buy a liter of rear end fluid and asked the guy about this part. He found that one has to buy cover piece it's attached to and after looking into this for 45 minutes came out to the lobby and told me there were 2 part numbers. The original pn was $549, but he doubted we could get it as the new pn replaced it and with the car being so old, thought all the original parts would be gone, leaving the new one at $1459. He felt so bad about the price he gave the $40 liter of fluid for free (and no I did not buy the part)

      Just the reverse of the removal. Make sure the plastic tab is seated properly then lightly tighten the nut. No need to remove the nut, just loosen it.

    I had the same problem on my SL55 and I made metal hinges… and repaired my little flaps. I made a couple of more hinges for friends in the German SL R230 club. You can find the manual and hinges when you search for kleine-klappe

    I have a 2004 sl350 and l have some similar issues plus some other ones. Not enough to change my opinion that it is a great drive and lovely car. Would be interesting if l could have a chat about some things with you personally,as unlike me you seem pretty good at prob solving when it comes to these.

      Greetings from Wisconsin. Thank you for the very informative video. I have to perform the same operation on the right side just as you did, however, I no longer have the flap, spring or rod (either lost in the wind or the original user didn't know what it was and threw it in the trash). Anyway, I was able to source the flap and related hinge bits from Octoclassic (thank you for the lead) and will attempt to find a suitable rod at the local hardware store. I'll also look for a spring, but the one needed seems to be very specific to this application. Thanks again for your help!

    • @autogaragelife
      @autogaragelife  7 месяцев назад +1

      Unfortunately they don’t come with any hardware so if you have lost the flap you will have to source a new spring and rod. They are very small so a look on the web may help in the first instance.
