The Empire should've modified this bad boy instead of discarding it. Placing a blaster proof cover or else in the main cannon, more heavy armored anything.
they should of done this to a lot of clone wars era vehicles. most of them are superior to the imperial variant except for maybe the Arquitens and the Raider warships
The AT-TE was designed much like the Venator. They were both designed to be very versatile designs, able to carry out a wide variety of missions. While there are other designs that are specialized and could fulfill a role more efficiently, these were made to be able to do it all with some level of proficiency. It's one of my favorite tanks, if not my all time favorite.
This, the AAT and the Sabre are what I consider the most practical tanks in Star Wars history.
So compared to the AT-AT it has some over-engineering, high crew usage, and its all-around situational awareness is dependent on cameras that can potentially disrupted. Which is still better than having no all-around awareness at all...
Is that how new AT-TEs are made in the thumbnail?
Martin Laird no it’s how AT-RTs are made, after their first battle they grow up to be AT-TEs
It's certainly cost effective
if I redesigned the AT-TE, I would add some turret's on the side's to cover even more of its blind spot, add mortar's to the back to have even more firepower, and increase the armor on the leg's and underbelly, I would also change the design of the leg's to match that of the crab droid's to give it better maneuverability and move faster as a result

Of all the walker variants the AT-TE does appear to be one of the more practical ones. With all of what you said about pressurization and from that one episode of the Clone Wars, I wonder why the GAR didn't use AT-TE more often in space battles or even under water with only the large cannon above the water. Seriously of all the Jedi Generals only Anakin, Mace Windu, and Obi-wan seem to be the only competent ones at actually being military generals. If I was the Supreme Chancellor (and also not a secret Sith Lord) I would have put the three of them as the Grand Generals (or whatever is the General equivalent to a Grand Admiral) of the GAR as their conflicting yet complementary tactics and styles would balance each other out.
Palpatine didn't want the Clone Wars to end so soon, he need them to last enough for the Senate to grant him more exceptional powers.
@@Hektols ; I know that is why I put in parenthesis "and also not a secret Sith Lord" .
This series has been well thought out and some of your points have been rather surprising. It would be interesting to continue the series with the flaws in the uniforms, and Not just Stormtrooper armor. Really, why wouldn’t Rebel pilot have a fully enclosed pressure suite and helmet?
Yea it is kind of silly that they don’t wear a full suit
I think the AT-TE’s biggest flaw/weakness is its vulnerable underbelly; walking over a normal landmine could destroy the entire tank, as well as whoever’s in it. The AT-AT overcame this weakness by being 7 stories tall; but that very “advantage”, along with its MANY other flaws, far overshadowed any ACTUAL advantages at all. The much simpler, much easier, and far cheaper way to fix this flaw was to simply add good armor plating to said underbelly, because there wasn’t any at all and good plate armor that WILL work is better than average plate armor that MIGHT work.
I think the unarmored underbelly was to maximize the tank's mobility. If it had full armor coverage then it might not have been able to do some of its more impressive feats like scaling sheer cliffs. But I suppose for the Empire's purposes it wouldn't need the manuveurability if it was being used for patrols and such.

One significant design flaw with the AT-TE was the drivers compartment. The driver essentially sat behind a giant picture window. It gave the driver great visibility, but also left him very exposed. @@komradearti9935 Yeah but compared with the other things its still alright
It even stands to reason, that the main gun was retrofitted onto the Civilian Version of the AT-TE, which is why the gunner has to sit outside. If the only thing a vehicle is doing is wasting bandits and protecting mining outposts, you would only need the equivalent of an HMG for anti-personel.

Funny. The ATTE always reminded me of a rhinoceros beetle.

Glad we got this video, honestly, flaws aside, the AT-TE is probably one of my favorite star wars ground vehicles, it's also an absolute shame the rebels (this is probably justified) nor the empire (this is not) failed to make use of them during the galactic civil war, much less spent the time and money to improve upon an overall good design
Favourite vehicle ever!
The clone vehicles in general kicked ass
What about 10 flaws of the 10 flaws series’s
Great, video. I'd like to see more to complement the 10 Flaws maybe even go back to the ones already done to show the pros vs. the cons. As far as the CRV, I work for a competitor and it pains me defend it, but it is a well built little vehicle very well suited to dropping the kids off at school and picking up groceries.
As good as the ATTE is, an M1A2 Abrams can take it out with two hits, one if the American gunner hits the ammo stowage. This is what tankers (not Wayde King and Brett Raymer) call ammo-racking. Simply, a tank is considered ammo-racked when a shell penetrates the armor, hits the ammo stowage, and causes an explosion that destroys the tank.
Commanders like Michael Wittmann, a German tank ace of World War II, knew this. It's part of how he died, actually.
Yeah but where is the ammo storage on the AT TE that uses Lasers.
Also I think a better shot would be on that Big green window where the Driver is sitting.
@@tanith117
You would be amazing at CinemaSins.
Thanks for catching me on that one. Even large-caliber, laser-based weapons like the guns on the Invisible Hand required physical cartridges.
If an M774 APFSDS round hits that general area of the walker, the kinetic penetrator will spark a fire, cause an explosion, and destroy the walker.
@@WednesdayAddamsMW tibana gss would be something that's not hazardous at all. You'd need a special mechanism to both heat it up and magnatize it to make it form plasma. The top gun just fires solid slugs using magnetism. That's just ran off whatever the AT-TEs power plant is.
@@robertharris6092
Thanks for telling me this. So I can't ammo-rack the damn thing. How else to destroy an AT-TE with an MBT? Hmm...
That is, if the MBT can even get a shot off before it'd be obliterated by the plasma spewing turrets equipped to the AT TE.
When I was a kid, my favourite Star Wars vehicle was always the AT-AT. Always. When I first saw the AT-TE in the films and more predominantly in The Clone Wars series, I wasn't overly impressed and thought it was a poor knock-off. It wasn't until maybe the third watch of the animae series that I really came to appreciate and eventually love the AT-TE. And now it's my favourite Star Wars vehicle!
The AT-AT was made to be impressive so the enemy would be demoralized, the AT-TE was made to be practical.
i cant imagine an AT-TE moving at 60kmh, is there any clone wars episodes showing it?
*DEJA VU*
@@m3lee699 I have been to this place before
Best feature for me was not just that it had 6 legs rather than 4 like the AT-AT. It was what those legs were able to do. If you look at all other Star Wars Walkers, they are in a very fixed position, with only a small arc of movement for momentum and turning. the AT-TE at 2 different sets of legs, each moved in a different way. Two heavily armoured support legs in the middle with four more flexible legs front and back. This in conjunction with it's flexible mid section not only enabled it to turn sharper than most walkers but also flex up/down over terrain. This can be observed best in the Clone Wars introduction movie.
This movement of the legs not only gave the Top Gunner 360 degree firing arc because it was on top of the tank, but also enabled the tank to pitch to give the gunner a higher or lower firing arc as needed. In addition, as seen in the video here, the vehicle can be angled into enemy fire to act as a bunker for the infantry blocking fire from going under it's belly.
From what I can tell in SWBF2, it functions really well as an MBT. It tanks a lot of damage, can weaken armor on large military cargo transports, and it’s main cannon obliterates everything
ATTE is better than Honda confirmed.
So the AT-TE is the M4 Sherman of Star Wars
I don't know how you kept a straight face through some of this video, 👍😂👍☯️
As much as I love the AT-TE, I have to admit that it does suffer from since serious flaws:
1. Exposed gunner: The walker had an exposed gunner for its mass-driver canon, a higher flaw given the amount of firepower this thing can put out. A well trained marksman could get an angle and with one shot halve the walker's firepower.
2. Inadequately protected drivers: All the drivers have to protect them is a window. Not armour plating, just a window. A well placed rocket could plow through the window, incinerate the crew and could have enough energy to penetrate deep into the walker and turn it into a fireball
3. Inadequate armour placement: The walker does have some missing armour plates for its undercarriage and it's 'flexi-joints'. The latter may be forgiveable given the walker's very niche ability to climb walls, but the former is surely unforgivable given its rather high clearance (Mines and rockets would have easy access).
All in all: whilst the walker is standout, it does suffer from some serious flaws which makes the empire's decision to retire them more understandable
AT TE fuse with LAAT carrier ... hybrid ship/tank .. more speed and mobility plus some shield .. allways ad shield
the empire should use the AT-HE instead of the AT-AT
good one
I agree with the points made in this video. I think the AT-TE was very well designed, and was versatile enough to be used in some interesting ways. I think it would be even more useful if its design was more modular. For example, the dorsal mass driver cannon could be replaced with a similar cannon mounted in such a way that it's capable of indirect fire. In such a configuration, a group of AT-TEs could act as a mobile artillery firebase. Other options for replacing the dorsal mass driver cannon are an anti-aircraft turret, or a turreted missile launcher. The AT-TE has been my favorite walker in Star Wars ever since I learned of its existence. It helps that it's far more practical than an AT-AT, which itself made an impression on me as a child.
Edit: Another change I would make to the design of the AT-TE, is the exposed gunner on the dorsal mass driver. Never made sense to me, glad to see it being called out here.
ahhh… I'm not sure I can un-see that tank on tank action.. The Stryker is exactly what came to mind to me too, given the AT-TE's main cannon. Very reminiscent of the big gun variant/model of the Stryker. Lastly, I agree - it's fun to "nerd out" on this stuff.
WTF is that thumbnail?? How AT-APs are made?
No at-tes are female at-aps have to use there third leg to mount them walkers.
Wait a second.
I only clicked on this because of the thumbnail
6:54 The KILLDOZER is an example of mechanized warfare. Over 10 years ago in Colorado a guy(who's name eludes me)got upset and turned a bulldozer into a tank. He laid waste to several buildings. I disapprove of what he did on moral grounds. However, the enhanced vehicle was a remarkable feat of engineering. He outfitted it with cameras for blind spots, RC firearms, & an air filtration system if I recall correctly. He gave the vehicle homemade composite armor, made tool steel sandwiched between concrete.
Nice job on reeling me in with the thumbnail
I thought the ATTEs were mounting each other to double their fire power.
*COUGH*
I rather use the Stryker IFVs(including the 105mm cannon MGS model) than the ATTE due to much speedy, much accurate and lower profile! Or an M1A2 Abrams tank!
If you want to use a wheeled vehicle so badly atleast choose the AMX-10RC or the B-2 Centauro instead of the overengineered shit that is the Striker.
You'd prefer that to an advanced walker that could wipe the floor with any MBT we have with just a single shot from one of it's plasma spewing blasters?
@@AnakinSkywakka The AT-TE can definitely not wipe the floor with any modern MBT. Like most Sci-Fi tanks it is conceived by people who gave no idea of just how good modern tanks are. But contrary to just the AT-TE atleast has a chance.
@@thefirstprimariscatosicari6870 Modern day MBTs are more maneuverable but even so, I doubt it's armor won't be able to hold it's own against the super heated plasma.
@@AnakinSkywakka Modern MBTs armour can reach the meter of effective RHA thickness. That's a lot of armour to penetrate.
Ironically Walkers are one of the things that really got me hooked into Star Wars in the first place the Jedi/Sith aspect came later. And they're still one of my favorite aspects of the SW universe despite their flaws. I like all of the designs but still kinda biased for the AT-ST, maybe because it's featured in most Star Wars games I played growing up.

Rule 34 in action.
The AT-TE was an infantry tank keeping with the star wars WWII ascetic. The concept of the MBT didn't come about till the later part of WWII and most countries still used different tanks for a variety of purposes throughout it, with infantry tanks being slower more heavily armored and with more guns to support infantry as they moved up on foot. Cruiser tanks ,to use the British designation, would be the light fast tanks meant to exploit holes in the enemy lines such as the republic saber tank and where meant to work together with there heaver brothers each covering for the others weakness.

This video just made me love the AT-TE even more. The minor flaws that you mentioned that were not allayed by infantry could probably be fixed with a few equally minor design improvements. Personally I think this walker could smoke an AT-AT if it was given a full complement of troopers and AT-RTs

@@laisphinto6372 did you read what I said? I said if it has the support of troopers and AT-RTs it could smoke the AT-AT in my opinion. That means if the AT-TE was using real tactics and not just lining up against the AT-AT like two armies trading musket fire.

When you see someone ask to do a flaws of the AT-TE video and some days later this video is posted...
I think this thing would look even better with some of its glaring flaws removed and the form following function a little more. Imagine an AT-TE with the cockpit section removed and thus having a sloped armoured front plate like a proper tank. The front and rear anti personell lasers could be moved slightly more to the sides of the vehicle, so that they can cover the side blind spots of the AT-TE a little better. And finally, the most important bit: The roof could be flattened a little bit to make space for an actual proper main turret, fully enclosed so it protects the gunner better. Think of a turret similar to that of the AAT. There you go, AT-TE fixed and in my mind it would look even better.

The thumbnail reminds me of the mating season of the at-te’s
Ahhh the beauty of nature!
I love the AT-TE personally. I think it is by far the best walker that has existed in Star Wars. That being said, I do think the AAT is the better combat platform when it comes to the infantry support role. It just wasn't used to effect because battle droids are dumb I guess? Repulsorlifts meant that getting bogged down on soft terrain wouldn't be a problem and it isn't reliant on LAATs to bring them into battle. A shorter profile meant that it would also be more suited for urban combat. The center mounted gun on such a long vehicle that provided no protection for the gunner would both present major gun depression issues (which was listed as a flaw in the AAT video) and an easy way for a sharpshooter to disable the primary weapon of the walker. A main gun fixed to the underside of the walker would have been a much better design since it would allow for a much larger main gun, provide better protection for the gunner who would probably be both spotter and gunner to reduce crew requirement by one, and turn the AT-TE into a fearsome self propelled gun. Basically a more mobile mini SPHAT.
The traversable gun is of little benefit due to its inability to effectively navigate urban environments and its sluggish speed when compared to flanking tanks like the TX-130. That was really the major flaw of the TX-130 is the lack of a traversable turret for its main armament that allowed it to effectively engage targets while zipping behind enemy lines. Its like whoever was designing the AT-TE and the TX-130 said "What if we give the tank that will sit back with the infantry and blow stuff up the traversable gun and the tank that will be deployed in companies capable of smashing through and flanking the entire enemy army the fixed guns? They'll never see that coming!"
Very few sci-fi franchises design things for function indeed.
Praise be unto The Expanse!
And that kids is how At-Rt's are made

Top ten features that made the hailfire Droid great. Please bring it back Star Wars.
Ummmm... The ATTE would much better be compared to the Bradley IFV than the Stryker, the bradley has a crew carry area, serves alongside infantry, and has larger armament like the ATTE
What i was thinking.
