My way less entertaining strategy for the gate at the paddock: drive the van up to the gate, keeping as close to the right hand fence post as you can. Then get out the passenger side (if necessary) and open the gate, just enough to get the van through. Otherwise do as you did, but let the ponies do their thing and then round them up after you have already driven through. Top entertainment though!!
