- Today we remove the gas tank and body from the 1967 VW Karmann Ghia! Let's see if we can bring it back to life! CT's Garage, CT, ctmoog #restoration #vw #ghia
Watching your videos is like driving by a car wreck. You don’t wanna look but you just have to! I’m vested now, so I have to keep watching just to see if you finish something!!!
Yep ol' CT is smarter than you think...
As a real Karmann Ghia fan: can you promise me that you wil bring this project to an end? Thank you and keep up the good work!
When you said “don’t try this at home I sang to myself:
Time to do some sketchy shit… doo dah….doo dah, hope I get away with…. it oh de doo dah day.
🤣🤣
Awesome video. I can’t wait to see what you’ll do with this build! Your videos are such an inspiration for DIYers everywhere!
🤣 thanks man! Your too kind my friend!
Awesome job man ! especially solo !
Absolutely an accomplishment! All by himself!
Thanks man! =) It was fun!
Thanks man!
Stay with it, CT!! Keep going on the Ghia until it's ready - then get back to Rusty!
ct the demolition man, another project in pieces, now let's stick with this one, and put it back together, vroom, vroom, ill be watching ya.. 🚙🚗🚥
prob get part done with this one then jump back to the dragon? Lol
Dooood! You got guts....that thing was a P R O J E C T!
Hey CT...This one is near and dear to my heart. I finished a 64 KG vert for my wife a few years back so this is bringing back some memories with every nut and bolt you remove. We all know disassembly is the easy part. I really hope you finish this one as they are awesome pretty rare cars that everyone really seems to enjoy. I know you have some VW experience and people like Darrin to help but please don't hesitate to reach out to me with any questions as I learned that Ghia parts can be tricky and I could possibly share what I learned. I found many people know a lot about bugs and buses but not as much about Ghia's. Best of luck on the restoration!
Oh nice a 64! Very cool! I really appreciate that man! Thank you so much. Please feel free to reply in the comments with tips or tricks you learned. If all goes well there should be at least two videos a week on the progress. I might leave the body patina for now and focus on the chassis and everything else. I'm curious how you removed the trim around the windows? I will need to replace all the seals.
@@CTmoog So mine is a convertible so it doesn't have the trim around all the windows like the coupe. It only has the door window scrapers which are pretty easy and the front windshield trim molding which was not fun. I actually had to bring in help on that. Sorry I can't help ya on that one!
@@mboss9400 No problem. I do some research on it. I'm sure I'll have to bring in someone to help on that as well.
@@CTmoog FWIW, West Coast Metric has all the rubber and plastic items and many other parts as well. I believe there’s another outlet called House of Ghia that stocks parts for these. My first car was a ‘69 so I am pretty familiar with these too.
🙏😁👍
totally amazed that the karmannghias door hinges were recessed and buses and beetles had exposed door hinges.
Remember the Ghia was coach built and more upscale than other models.
Cracking job CT lol how easy it is is now to repair floor pans, brakes etc keep on going sir !!
Thanks man!
Ok CT, cleaning, cleaning, cleaning..., washing, washing, washing..., another same standard to find out rust for every where, now give us some pleasure to see you working on the Dragon, buddy.
Them geas are well engineered. German engineering at it's best always loved the looks of them that car is all original wow time capsule 👍
Yes, they are really cool cars! Thanks man!
Good job CT. It's nice to see you working on the VWs again!
Thanks James! 😎
I'm impressed I would have thought you would need at least 2 guys to do it. Well done.
Thanks man! Yes, it can be done solo. I did it a few years back in my garage with a hand chain hoist. I prefer the chain hoist. It's much easier as long as you have something to hang it from that won't get pulled down by the weight! =)
Window washer was pressurized by connecting the spare tired to the tank through the valve. I had an old VW Beetle that did the same.
Thanks Fletcher! Very interesting.
Yeah, the old beetles were the same and when you topped up your water you needed to remind yourself to pump up the tyre. I used to over inflate the spare. Mostly because I was lazy 😁
Ya beat me to it Fletcher. Was looking to see if somebody had already made this comment ;-)
Excellent CT! Really enjoyed this. Agree, 1967 is a cool year.
Oh you did the ole Fixin Bugs -N- Stuff method. You can use cinder blocks to raise the jack stands higher. Great job!
Great start to the rebuild CT. I will be watching the videos to come. Any body parts that need to be replaced should be ordered now so you won’t have to wait later all the while you can concentrate on the chassis. Love the video and how everything went!
outstanding, i give you 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Karmann ghia project...👍
Awesome! Thank you my friend! =)
I give you 10 stars for what you do CT , you do it great !! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
It's going to be very interesting when he puts everything back together
Thanks for your vote of confidence! =)
I doubt it will get done, his completion rate is close to ZERO.
CT order those gas lines n brake parts now ...show these doubters ...don't be like teenager n push it aside ..get r done ....or your gettimg the sledge hammer cheap shots from me...lmao
CT atleast you got the butt crack problem fixed.....lmao how much you selling that for ?...
@@robertnauss4815 HAHA! Not sure yet. Let's see how far I get. What do you think it will be worth running and driving?
Keep going on this project, start to finish! So easy to repair those floors now.
This is going to be quite the project. Best of luck! Between this and the bus you've got a full plate!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍Not to mention the Dragon!
love the 'I think we can clean it up'.. and totally missed the rust holes in the tank...
You hooked me Rusty, and then the Porsche. I tolerated the Swamp Dragon, but lost interest when you got the Beast. But you’ve hooked me again with the KG. Now just stick with the KG and finish it!!!! (Oh, and replace those floor pans - don’t patch them).
Awesome man! Thank you! I'm going to clean the chassis this week and get a closer look at the pans and everything else. Looks like they will need to be replaced.
Thanks for the great video, and to mention the green 72. im also have a 72 vert the im working on, following your steps is being a breeze with your direction Thanks again 🙂 and keep the great work 👍 😀
Sim
Just found your channel tonight and loving your ghia resto! Giving me the confidence to start on my ‘62! You’ve got yourself a new viewer 🤙
Thanks Peter! You can do it. More updates coming soon.
i love these old vw cars strong vehicles
Currently putting my 74 Ghia back together; No need to do a "Body Off" - previous owner did all the "Body & Paint"; I'm simply installing a New Wiring Harness and then have to do an entire interior - carpet, panels, headliner, (seats are good) and dash (gauges/installation) - BUT - I watched your entire "Body Off" video and it was great to see all the components - also I loved that I wasn't watching a "30 Minute TV Show" where they have all the necessary tools to do such a job, e.g. overhead hoist/crane, forklift, crew of 7-10...you know what I mean. For guys like us - aka: "Shade Tree Mechanics" I enjoy seeing guys like you working in their garage, I will say you have a little more room than I have, but "GREAT VIDEO" - "NICE WORK", I'll try to follow you through your restoration. STAY SAFE STAY HEALTHY STAY SMART (informed).
I call that a good start. I cut my teeth on imports. Never had a Giha tho🙏😁👍 Good luck with her. Thanks for sharing
Hi CT, Great Job! You made it look so easy! I say replace the pans and don’t use patches. The brake system is a dual circuit on a 1967! I believe they were upgraded.
Sometimes I feel like being the only one on the planet wo sprays each and every bolt, nut and screw with penetrating oil a couple of days before disassembly begins. It makes things a lot easier and saves much fuss and hassle with corroded threads. Nevertheless: Thumbs up!
Well done. Looking forward to seeing how you go about making the dollies so that you can move the body around.
Thanks for the update 👍🏻 Always look forward to watching. I see Fletcher beat me to the pressure source question 😁
Wow CT a huge loader in the background just rige up a sling and spreader bar and lift the body off.
Hey CT. Hope you are well and thank you for this extremely informative video. Am embarking on taking the body off of my '1 vert. Am hoping that when I go there tomorrow that the rear torsion bar at the back that goes through the body applies to mine, as I have undone all of the bolts (and the ones behind the wheel too, but the back wasn't releasing. After watching this video again I see you dismantled a rear 'stabilising' contraption that is pinned to the body at both sides at the back. Fingers crossed. Thanks again.
Book is open. I say he strips the car, puts it in a pile in a corner somewhere and starts another project.
Exactly what I said at the end of the last video, this car is now history. such a shame
The Man with 1000 projects... never finished.
Just happened on this video whilst searching for something else. Subscribed to this guy when he started new. But soon realised he was not serious, except about showing off all his new equipment purchases. Then it became obvious he never Ever finished anything he started. Guess the revenue from these videos is enough to keep him buying? Cancelled my subscription way back then, what I have seen today does not persuade me to re subscribe.
Good job, eyeballing the dirt. Somebody else will show up when actual mechanics are needed.
subscribed to your channel for the VW content... great to see you back on the V Dubs!
Thanks Andy!
Nice find car looks pretty solid for its age and pretty complete
Good job CT👍 Now let’s finish it up! I would love to see you redo it with a new paint job and interior restore. 😊
CT sorry I haven't been washing you and keeping up with your work. I'm going to try to cach up on the videos. My mother passed away the 29th of July,so I was dling with that. Trying to get back what I love to do
Good to see you Burton! Sorry about your mother. I hope you are doing well my friend.
Nice job ct, did the exact same thing with my bug, everything is so much easier this way. Brake lines from fill bottle to master cylinder are only low pressure so do just slide on, don't panic. Great vid
Mmm, interesting, Mr. CT. I would vote for some overhead chainfall crane to pick it up, but you managed to get it off in the sketchyest manner.. =) Ok, the truth is we all do some dangerous stuff sometimes... Anyway, yes, you might have to replace the floor pans although the body looks quite nice.. I think you'll have to fix the lower edges and borders and these are a call for welding craft, so no excuses anymore. Time to make some sparky rain... =) Keep on, rusty is also waiting for some crafting..
Thanks my friend! I was trying to be very careful while doing the sketchy stuff! =)
Looking forward to watch the next episode!
order some 5mm fuel hose from autohauz Arizona...plus some Barrel nuts (extra ones) and axle seal kits, (you will need them all the time and cheap from there, Some transmission seals, (cheap from there) Get a few of them maybe some Brake light switches and some oil pressure switches. a few of each
OH also Axle boots they are cheap there. the german ones. you will need to change them.
also Blue brake fluid hose. a bit of that. Cheap at autohauz. you dont want to buy this stuff at a regular auto parts store. Must be German....
Awesome video man tomorrow I am definitely taking mines apart
Excellent video CT :) Ghia is easy then Rusty and Swamp Dragon take apart for sure also going as planned for sure ! I could tell you are super excited and going to fun project to do also work on in steps too!
The plastic reservoir with the small air hose is used to send window washer fluid to the front windshield, not to make the windshield wipers move. Volkswagen did the same thing with their VW beetles. They would connect air line from the reservoir to the spare tire and use the pressure to push the washer fluid up to the windshield. It would be interesting to see if the other end of that hose runs to the spare tire ?
Wow atractive job after clean and restoration it will be so nice you are wise mane and so skiled hand keep it up
Thanks 👍
Great job. Looking good. Be safe!
Sweet tommy boy shirt! Lol great vid as always
Thanks man! One of my favorite movies! =)
The washer bottle was often hooked up to the spare tire. you just had to remember to check the spare tire pressure every couple of months. My 72 type 3 Van has one like that .
Now we’re talking! You might be surprised at all the original things you might be able to recondition and reuse without having to buy new, and most times, inferior replacements. Looks like apart from the obvious mechanical parts like for the motor, brake lines and brakes you might need floor pans and all the rubber seals, gaskets and bushings. I believe you can reuse everything else in the car which is good news because you don’t need to spend that much on new parts.
By all means, replace all of the rubber cushions and seals!
Don't forget to pressure wash it. The scrap yard like clean metal 🤟🤟🤘🤘
great project for sure good job doing it yourself would be hard but now that it is apart easy as pie
Man the body looks solid, I’d replace the pans. Great project though!!
Kinda funny way to lift the body, but hey, it works. It's really amazing that all screws can be loosened after 54 years without any problems.
Great video glad you posted keep them coming thanks
Great video. I just picked up a 65 Ghia and was wondering what the best way to separate the body/pan and was curious if it could be done solo so I’m glad to see what I was thinking is possible.
Good job. Looks like a good car to start with too. I have a 69 1/2 that I recently restored, rebuilding the engine now to 1680. Should be a noticeable power upgrade.
Idk how you do it CT! That’s some serious work! Nice job and keep rollin💪🏼
Thanks man! 😁
looking forward to the next video.
Can’t wait to see her running!
You should replace the whole floor pan not patch because i know you spot weld you can watch duckman or vw darin they both have really good videos on floor replacement it a good thing the body is in good shape and you don't have to replace the heater channels.
Hard to believe you are starting another project... Be careful CT sometimes you go too far you can mamake a good driver without replacing sandblasting and painting everything. I recently purchased a car that sat for 45 years in a warehouse I am driving it now after just a few months.
Just love those old cars
Nice! Now you can replace the
floor pan if you need to.
Them gias are a cool car love the looks of them 👍
Essa restauração vai custar muito trabalho e caro. Like no vídeo, forte abraço do Barão das Estradas no.
Professor early today Saturday greetings here in Argentina a mechanic that makes a little money I do not work on Saturdays
Enjoy your time off and have a great weekend! =)
Hi CT, Cool you got right on this project and great progress too👍 The floor pans may not be saved? I think they sell half pans but if it was me I'd just replace both of the entire pans. Patching old metal takes allot of time but is cheaper if you have the time? Depends on wallet size and how old you will be when finished patching🤣
yes ct they sell the 1967 only brake reservoir. Its a one year only item as is the master cylinder too.
Very good CT
CT I would urge you to contact Milwaukee tools, since you (almost) exclusively use their brand. It's worth a try IMO.
Another one stripped down
The Swamp Dragon is the only project I own that was completely stripped down. We are doing a complete restoration on The Swamp Dragon. I'm leaving the body on the Ghia patina and restoring the chassis, engine and transmission, wheels, etc....
@@CTmoog Even if you are not painting the body, try to treat everything down there with rust reformer/restorer, like Mike Fn does. Kind of cool that it has the ‘67-‘68 rear anti sway bar system for swingaxles. The Beetles had them too just before they switched to IRS in 1969. You just need the rubber bushings and clean and paint and recondition it and just put it back. This car is very complete and unmolested.
It’ll be a short, easy project to get back on the road…. Keep it simple and don’t go down the rabbit hole!!
Great job!
Nice T-shirt! 😁
GREAT JOB CT!!! I LOVE THE VIDS~!
Edge of your seat stuff….👏👏🇬🇧
The yellow wire coming out of the steering column, is the horn. The other wire, which connects to the body, is the ground. They probably make hinge pin kits for your doors. Name for the car? How about "Karma Ghia"?
Here's a hint that worked well for me, "back in the day"...Take all four wheels off, and store them out of the way. Then, lower the brake drums/disks down onto wheel dollies, which I believe you already have. Makes the chassis much lower and easy to move out from under the body.
To move the body, get four of the furniture dollies (like from HF) and either lower it onto them, or build appropriate adapters to fixture it in place. Yes, back then, I set the body on saw horses. Never even thought about how sketchy it was, but I got away with it!
Thanks Neil! Yes, maybe Karma or something like that would be cool! Great idea on the wheel dollies!
if I'm not mistaken the window cleaner takes the pressure from the spare wheel like on my vw beetle but looking good take pressure in some other way but you can put an electric pump and you will see that it works better ... at least I am fine with this solution 👍I don't know if the Beetle's collapsible steering column will fit on the Karmann Ghia but it would be safer
Muito bom, vou acompanhar seu trabalho 👍👍
OMG you said you were going to finish a project! When is it going to be done! Mpftmfpfthmph!
What state are you in? That Ghia came from Columbia SC. At 34:20….
GIBBES Machinery Company decal on the bumper. That was Gibbes VW one of the oldest VW dealers in the USA. I worked at the dealer in the body shop in the 80s-90s. They also sold Mazda at that location along with VW.
Also there is a Midlands TECH decal that is a technical college in Columbia.
This car is super original from what I can see. The rear spring shocks are aftermarket, and someone has spliced that main brake line by the pedals.
cant wait to see more!
CT, Are you going to keep on this one until done ? I hope so. You have too many unfinished projects.
@@CTmoog Looking forward to the next part. If I was you, I would just get new floor panels for it instead of patching them.
The fuel tank looked like it has holes in it.
I would have luved to help assist you with all that work!
Air for the washer fluid comes from the spare tire.
I was quite surprised when it was mentioned on a different video how few body seams the Karmann has. This should make it very rigid. When I was at college learning to be a telecom tech, my roommate had a Karmann that was in a head-on collision, which he fixed up temporarily and painted with a brush(!), so that he had wheels to come to college with. He lived about 800 km away. The car was fitted with a 1600 Porsche air cooled engine and an old Volkswagen gearbox, which gave it a lot of pull but slow on the top-end. He overhauled the engine and had custom built separate exhausts fitted.
Since you have the body off, you might as well do a complete, ground up restoration. I mean, how many Ghia's are left that are in fantastic shape? Not enough is the answer! :)
Very CRAZY MAN!!
Good job
If not "Sketchy" then its not meant for you tube. nice work, 2 ton jack stands for 200 lbs body. Over kill but perfect for comments. Love your style, get it done ;. is the goal who needs Lift, when you got got 2x4's 2in steal square metal. for cross braces.. makes it happen. on Serous Note makes repair work "way easier" correct I do that to every vehicle if I could.
If them bolts can talk from all them years mounted on that car.😮
Never seen vw disc rotors with the big vent holes like that. Check out how to build a vw body dolly.
Me neither; those are rare.
The spare tire is hooked to the washer tank with a hose. The air pressure in the spare is used for the window washer
What did you do get up at the azz crack of dawn and upload a video? I really appreciate it tho I was bored. 👍🏾
Yes! Thanks man!
Lmao
The only good thing about the windshield wipers being operated by spare tire air pressure is, you had to check your spare & washers fluid at every fill up, or be screwed if you failed to refill it. Then the gas stations moved the air pump from the fuel pump islands and started charging for air.
CT
Check out Tho 17 has a great idea for the Ghia body Keep up the great work!
Id make sure that steering grommet is good. We wrecked our 59 ghia because the steering grommet totally broke in 2
That is good to know! I will get a new one...How bad was the wreck?
@@CTmoog If you do, don’t do the mistake of getting one of those red urethane ones. Use a stock, fabric and metal reinforced one. The urethane ones break without warning and don’t have additional reinforcement.
Your chassis will need a new car old chinese proverb God save the Queen!!!😵😰🚨😨👑👑
