I typically dont plug a tire shoulder... but as a former roadside assistant, i met a guy who was a Landscaper, had a helper, and was about 2 hours from home in a 90s chevy truck and i think he had like 35s or 37s on it and he picked up a wheel weight. It was more or less in the center of the tire. I called every tire shop around, but it was too old to touch and nobody had anything in stock to replace it with. I loaded all his grabbable equipment and tire into my service truck which was a 96 f150 extended cab with a 5.0. We went into walmart and grabbed a plug kit or two and put about 5 or 6 plugs into it. We put air into it and checked it for leaks at the shop i was dispatched from. Took it back, mounted it back on, loaded his equipment back on the truck and trailer, and he was on his way home. I called him that afternoon and he said he had been home for about half an hour, and the tire still had all the air in it, and all was good. I seen him months later after i switched jobs and i was in his area. Same tire on that truck. Never had to add air. 😅
The rule is lay your thumb on the edge of the tire. Approx 1” from the edge. The area between your thumbs is repairable. Any thing out side that is not on a passenger/lt truck tire. Medium commercial is the same but can be repaired by a retread plant as a section repair.
I've plugged so many tires it ain't funny! Never had an issue. I know that doesn't really mean anything cause it could blow at any time, but yet in 40 years, it hasn't. Don't mind the haters, they just jealous lol
Man that’s some strong had grip. You pushed that thing in with one hand while the other held the camera. 👍I plug mine all day long. Man I’m not in the Daytona 500 or in high speed cornering heavy towing. If I was I consider replacing the tire until then I’m get my moneys worth.
Nope, too close. It's one hard braking while turning left from a Rapid Unscheduled Deflation. 😮 Plus, it's a front tire, you should be conservative on patching anywhere near the sidewall on a front tire. You might get away with it for a while...until you don't!
I worked a tire shop and service truck for 25 years and I have patched numerous sidewalls and I never had any problems with it I even patched sidewalls that had been knifed
your an asshole you blame the driver for running over a nail I guess your supposed to see a nail at high speeds and your the one that's going to get sued if they get into an accident and you tried to repair it being too close to the side
Plugs are not an acceptable repair. The liner may be split and no plug will repair that. The liner is the tube of a tubeless tire. If it is split air will migrate into the casing layers and separate the tire causing a failure.
Dude do you even wrench you trippin my guy that sht will work temporarily till you get the tire replaced. You trying to sound technical and dont even work on sht.
@@dexgsand actually he is 100% correct, in addition, that portion of the tire flexes, and heats up excessively, and can exacerbate separation. in addition plugs are not acceptable repairs by ANY tire authority, this is a huge liability, and could bite him in the ass.
One thing to be careful with say a customers vehicle , have they ran it nearly flat and drove on it. Need to remove the tire and inspect it in that case. If it was my vehicle I’d plug it at the edge. I have a car trailer / equipment trailer that had plugs in the side walls of the tires . Never a problem , but trailer tires are different.
hell ya! when i was ypunger and working at the gas station, buddy came in hurry with a low tire, it had a slice, i put two plugs right next to each other, with patch glue and it held! it was a friend and i would not do that on my car! dismount tir and patch on the inside!
I would say that's too close to the sidewall for a proper patch job. Also, plugging is bad for the tire. It can cause belt separation, which, in turn, could cause a blow out. I would, at least, move that tire to the rear for safety. Would be best to just replace the tire, but I suppose that could buy you some time. This is why I feel like road hazard warranties are worth it when you purchase tires.
After the 2007 economy collaspe and I was out of work one of my tires got a screw in it on the sidewall, about an inch below the crown. I knew I was suppose to replace the tire but I said f__k it and put a plug in it. Got about two more years out of before I replaced it.
Ive plugged them on the corner before and as far as i know its still runnin. I ran it 6 months before selling car. Most garages wont plug them if its less than a thumb width wide
Omg! Get that tire off the car. Warranty voided. Fails safety inspection in N.H We won't even patch tires In the last tried. That's a liability I wouldn't take. Major tire retailer here, and we don't even have a road plug kit
Usually when I plug a tire, the tire shop will not touch the tire if the plug does not hold. They usually replace the tire at a surcharge. Plugs have held me through on light vehicles but my truck plugs do not work. I dont blame you for trying though especially if it's just a temporary fix to get you somewhere to replace the tire.
No rope plug and as close as that is ..mite not even take a patch ..depends on what direction the puncture it . If it’s towards the side wall then nope need tire. Won’t know till you take the rubber off the rim .
It seams like no one has every truly patched or plugged it is dangerous at high speeds but itll work in a pinch to get you to where you need to know sometimes its better to put a bandaid on it untill it can be fixed but if you do it no warranty no liability
On the edge like that, I'd fix it, haven't seen any issues in the past doing that before. But I also only use safety seal products, it would be best to use the patch/plug combo if you could remove the tire.
I had a nail in the sidewall one time plugged it up thought for sure it wasn't going to work. that bitch held for the rest of the life of the tire. (9 months)
smdh I infact did both. This a 60 second shorts video dude. Something has to get cut out. And btw, Ive never claimed to be a professional. Stop being a big drama queen.
There is a reason why industry standards are created. This one is to protect against a tire failure. To ignore them is foolish. To teach others to ignore them is dangerous. I am in that industry. Just trying to make people aware.
Look I don’t know how good a mechanic you are but you’re putting yourself in a position of liability with this clip. You don’t want to be in that position.
@mikeconnelly5029 I'm at home and this is my car sir. This a temp fix to my own dam car. Is that OK with you? There are better ways to get ya point across. Coming in somebody comment section talking shit about "I wouldn't let this guy work on my car" def not one of them.

My rule of thumb is two finger's width from the curve. Anything closer I wouldn't patch due to liability

Isn't a patch going to have more potential to fail near the sidewall from the tire flexing each time it spins around?
I've plugged so many tires it ain't funny! Never had an issue. I know that doesn't really mean anything cause it could blow at any time, but yet in 40 years, it hasn't. Don't mind the haters, they just jealous lol
Never plug a corner, patch plug is better and is more prone to hold.

Save your patches and stick the nail back in with some glue.

Yeah right that's a horrible idea 💡
That was well within an inch of the shoulder, so that’s playing with fire. Use the palm test, if your thumb covers it, it’s too close!

Those gloves… rule of thumb
It looks borderline. I can’t remember what the spec was when I was still in the shop. 1/2” or something like that.
I can bearly do that with 2 hands bro , nice job

I would have plugged it. But any closer and I would have declined. I've done dozens of plugs in similar spots with no problems

1” from the sidewall with a mini
To close to edge. Especially dangerous on front.
Yes. Getting a crew has nothing to do with driving oh my God😮
Plug it buddy it'll be good to go
that sidewall nonsense is wrong i had a plug square in the middle of my sidewall for almost 5 years

Patch it and send it

A tyre shop wood say no.
As long as it holds air.
Lots of tyre shops carry on like the tyre is going to explode.
