I virtually have same mods as the first ms3 on this vid, and the race looked about the same. I wish that the black ms3 didn't slow down at the end, so I could compare the 2nd ms3 to the 3rd. I wanted to see if there was a noticeable difference with the fmic. Awesome vid bro.
Thanks Brother. The aftermarket is already getting pretty big. They have bigger turbos in development right now for some pretty nice gains. No mods yet for my ST, I've been focused on other things and purchases for now. In due time though! Have you done anything new to your snake recently?
Erick Fernandez i know this is a year old comment but STs make that noise pretty easily in the cab if even the air box lid is taken off with the stock filter in it even. i enjoyed that little noise until i got a proper intake and bov for my FoST
Pretty accurate outcomes. I have a 08 Speed3 and lost to a ST but since then "all Motor Mounts, Cat Delete, HKS Catback, Forge BPV, KNN SRI. I can take a ST now and I have 86000 miles. The ST are no joke though. Some mods and it's on!
Very well made video. Contrary to the video my speed3 with only an intake an rear motor mount absolutely spanks my buddies stock ST. We did 3 runs from a dig and 1 from 45 and he had no chance. Oddly, I'd probably consider him a better driver than I?

For everyday ues this car is perfect. I have no gripes with it.. its so comfortable and nicely equipped and the driving experience is wonderful.. even when not racing around. I would go test drive one for yourself and then decide what options you need/want.

nice! i believe the video. i think the st is a lil bit lighter than the speed and it puts down a lil bit more hp/tq at wheels on a dyno from what i've seen..Which race did u brake boost at? doing that makes a big difference...I think the ms3 and st are pretty much equal because theres so many mix reviews..i remember the ms3 running a 3:16.2 at lightning lap and the st running a 3:21:4. But the reviews out there now claims the st is faster at a track..
Great video quality. Love the way you incorporated both views! With that being said, I think for proper credibility, you should allow a reputable MS3 guy to drive the MS3 vs the FST. Ive already smoked 4 FST's in my stock MS3 from rolls so I sincerely have to question your outcomes. Great videos though, props!

coming from an 09 Junior Tuned Full Bolt on WRX with e85 tune as well(low 12s all day on stock clutch just with 93) and i absolutely love the ST. obviously not nearly as quick but i enjoy it much more. sold it because they're selling high now and I got what i paid for it ;) had a g37 but thank you flood damage...ST has me smiling much more.

Yeah, they are so closely matched that it could go either way. Alot of factors like drivers and weather and road conditions could sway it either way. I didn't brake boost any of those races, but the Black one did on the last race with the 5.0 (3 way race). Yeah, I've also seen MotorTrends comparison of the 2 cars where their pro driver ran 1 second quicker around Willow Springs with the ST. So definetly closely matched cars.
This is weird because I have a mostly stock (just intake and blow off valve) 08 Speed3 and I smoked a stock 2015 ST from a dead stop yesterday. Maybe there's a difference in performance between first and second gens?
Only Speed that had a passenger was the Black one (2nd Speed). No weight reduction on the ST, but I did have about 30 pounds of camera equipment in my back seat.
I'm sorry you feel that way Justin, but you are entitled to your opinion. I can assure you my ST is bone stock.. I have no reason to lie. I am friends with the MS3 drivers and we dont BS each other. The reason this car is getting all the hype is because it performs.. and delivers a great driving experience. The Speed3 is still a great car, it just comes down to personal preference as far as styling, and interior design.
Hey Daniel, nah I dont really miss the stang to be honest. 2 of my neighbors have a '13 GT and 1 has a '14 Boss so I can always go bug them when I want my stang fix lol. The last Speed in the video has a Freek Tune, from what I hear it is the best and most aggressive tune for the Speed 3.
Of course, gonna wait a few thousand more miles before I mod it to make sure nothing breaks.. scared because the car is in its 1st year production. After that, gonna do the usual intake/exhaust/tune.. then look into putting a bigger turbo on it.
The STs weakest link is its intercooler, and it also had a slight .3l displacement deficit comparative to the ms3. Quick car either way, it'd give my stage 2 GTI a run for my money
Thats great man, I know in the past usually upgrading the clutch made it harder to push. I had a buddy who had a supercharged '00 Mustang GT and he got a upgraded clutch and that sucker was a leg press to push down lol.
I have owned both. The MS3 has a lot of tq, but its gear ratios are short. It's puts out roughly 15.6 boost. The ST has 11hp less, but it has a twin scroll turbo with 21psi and taller gears. Both are great, I loved my MS3. It's truly a special car. But in regards to performance; ST is a better car.
Thanks brother. I think only the parts from Ford Racing dont void the warranty completely. You should talk to your service department if your thinking of getting something to see what they consider good and bad.
An intake and catback system wouldnt void it but once the car is catless or tuned its voided. I have intake, catback, tune, and motor mounts and i wasnt messed with when i brought mine in for warranty work, just make sure the stock tune is on before bringing it in.
I know this is kinda a necro, but with the speed 3 (Just bought one for a daily) all you need is high pressure fuel pump internals and a tune and you will be much faster than an ST. Mazda left the tune massively rich for cooling. There is a TON of tuning room even stock (You really should upgrade the fuel internals first though) Just figured id post this for people trying to decide what to buy.

You're welcome TravelingMan, Both cars are in fact great.. it all comes down to your personal preference as far as interior and exterior styling. I would recommend just going out and test driving both equipped the way you would want them and see which one calls to you.

I don't get it, today I test drove a focus st and it seemed very underpowered, it did not seem like it could ever keep up with a ms3 or wrx. Maybe stock tunes are not very strong? It didn't really "push" me against my seat at all like I had hoped for
***** when the car is bone stock if you arent completely flooring it its not using the overboost feature which adds 15hp and like 50lb of torque. with a retune the torque goes up even more.
You cannot brake boost in Mazdaspeed 3s. But, you don't really need to with a stock k04. It seems like the ms3s in this video, need a little bit of a driver mod. Especially in that second ms3. Shouldn't hear that HKS until he shifts into 6th gear.
Black ms3 did let off, but the focus ST is a factory freak with an excellent driver. I have videos of the black ms3 running the freak tune one and a fully bolted stratified tuned gen 2. Will post when I get the time.

got a question I got a focus st and I live 1 mile from the highway and I like to drive fast. In the morning how long should I warm up the car or how should I drive it since I am so close to the highway, and have to get up to at least 55mph after 1 mile. thanks
Honestly, cars made these days don't need to be warmed up as much as they used to. However, I like to wait about 1 minute or until the idle drops down to normal before taking off for work. As long as you keep up with oil changes you should be fine with the way you are driving.

fsflip3111 hey broski! And yeah I'm pretty much maxed on bolt ons minus a larger turbo lol. They make a huge difference than stock too btw. My dad shortly after me bought a ms3 (he did like the ST but didn't like the price) I pull on him hard lol. Bolt ons so far are downpipe, race pipe, catback, short ram intake, fuel pump internals, fmic, bov, itv22 plugs, rmm, cobb accessport with a custom tune and I'm at 347whp.
For a comparison , every pound counts , mazda guy had a passenger and adds more weight to be pulled , and for the fact that the ST wasn't modded that's kind of not a fair match but what ever, it looks like you guys had fun

Did you floor it? The ST has a really odd throttle map on the stock tune. It's not very linear at all.

Remember stock the speed 3 or mps boost 0.9bar boost from factory.st boost 1.5 bar.so it spools up faster.

Good rule of thumb is wait for the oil temp to be at 1/4 before really romping on it.
Yeah usually once the revs go down to normal idle you're good to go. I wouldn't romp on it but you will be fine getting on the highway.

How well did the mazdas run without the fuel pump internals?
Fine...until the stocker can't keep up which can be very early on in modding. Then all kinds of fun things can happen.

bboy4050 hey OP, you said you were stock with your speed3. im assuming you upgradded it, is it a huge gain in the low gears ??? (becuase i know they are limited boost? i drove a few speed3s. i really like them but they didn't pull like i hoped for. im guessing that could be why. )
fsflip3111 hey broski! And yeah I'm pretty much maxed on bolt ons minus a larger turbo lol. They make a huge difference than stock too btw. My dad shortly after me bought a ms3 (he did like the ST but didn't like the price) I pull on him hard lol. Bolt ons so far are downpipe, race pipe, catback, short ram intake, fuel pump internals, fmic, bov, itv22 plugs, rmm, cobb accessport with a custom tune and I'm at 347whp.
bboy4050 nice, 347 is alot for fwd.. congrats! normal fuel or e85? so once you tune it, and toss some bolts ons, it pulls you back in your seat?
For a comparison , every pound counts , mazda guy had a passenger and adds more weight to be pulled , and for the fact that the ST wasn't modded that's kind of not a fair match but what ever, it looks like you guys had fun
