I'd love to do this, but I had enough trouble just replacing the tail pipe. The bolts were rusted into one block of steel, and had to cut them out. I'm sure the rest is similar. I'm experiencing a bad exhaust smell which leads me to believe I have a leak somewhere. Since mine is water cooled It could get a bit tricky. Good video. It does inspire me to solve my issues for sure. Thanks.
Is everything staying together well? Looks like you're missing a brace on the j-pipe. That could be contributing to the amount of exhaust movement while running. In the midst of a exhaust refresh hell on a 84 myself,
It's scarier than you think. The bolts I had were kind of rusty but they were still able to come out. It was still possible to remove them without needing a jack. All the tips are in the video 😃. Have fun!
soak them in Kroil or Let Go a day in advance, while cold, and agian before you start, wire brush the rust off any threads, and hit it with propane, not much, my mechanic said doesn't take much and use the biggest (torque you can get) ... I have used a 1/2 break bar on some nuts and it just moves them, where a shorter 3/8 breaker, just breaks things and creates more work.... good luck -- if you can, buy yoru vw from Calfiornia, my 71 is a joy to work on...everything comes apart as it should....so much for Buffalo NY cars !!! NOTHING but 50 miles of bad road there...teh 85 is from PA and sat, some rust and it always falls in my face and ears while under it...
You don't loose compression if the leak is after the exhaust valve but you do loose back pressure if that is an issue.

Thanks, best of luck on yours
Hi, this video is very helpful, do you have more specific video of removing or putting on header 2+4 ? I am having trouble fitting it on.
Unfortunately I didn't film that but you should be able to find a way to manipulate it to where it fits without a lift.
Did you use any exhaust donuts between the j pipe and cat?
Yes, the ones they came with. Each junction had a seal.

No, everything fit just fine for me. It was still intimidating to work on but overall fit together nicely.
How hard was removing nuts and bolts at the manifolds (on the engine block)? Were they rusty? Any tips?
