At around 7:05 you answered the question I've always wondered. Guess one doesn't need to be a welder to attempt this! Thanks man super helpful! I hope I can fix my Mustang now.
Good idea on those ear plugs. I've dug more rust, slush and mud out of my ears more times than I can count. Should've thought of that years ago. Thanks for the idea. P.S. It's good to see that nobody stole your catalytic converter.
The reason people steel catalytic converters is that they believe that it will convert their Ford into a Cadillac. Also, some people believe that the Hazzard button on their car will turn their vehicles into the General Lee.
You can purchase exhaust systems online. I replaced the muffler back on a 2002 Tacoma for $65 delivered vs. $400 at the local muffler shop. Just cut the old one off and slide the new one on. Excellent video.
I know it’s been some time since you posted this. I’m fixin’ to replace the exhaust on my 2003 tundra. I’m curious about where you made the cut? I’d like to avoid needing a short piece like in the video if possible. Thanks!
Great job Dave! A comment though, if you notice at the back end of the catalytic converter there was a broken off support from the truck frame that was meant as a support for the exhaust system that still needs to be placed and you will also notice a mating groove in the bottom of the exit pipe from the catalytic converter where the support mates up. You might be able to pick up that part from the auto wreckers. Take care, Bob
Thanks, I'm replacing my 1993 bronco exhaust. Someone in the past put a mean sounding muffler in, I am tired of load so I'm following your video. Thanks Paul
Man, where was this video when I needed an exhaust a year ago! I was in the exact same boat with a C10 I picked up for $800 bucks, and unlucky me spent $400 on an exhaust that woulda done exactly what yours did. Live and learn.
My favorite “new” channel on RUclips. Super practical stuff. My 1993 F150 sure needs some TLC. Only has 115,000 miles on it, but she has some rust...especially when we are talking about the exhaust.. We paid $2200 for the truck. Looked at new and it was a bit more than that :)
I have a love hate relationship with exhaust. I hate doing it but I love seeing shiny new pipes go in whether it’s a stock replacement or a performance system.
Good timing there - have to go in to pick up a muffler and tail pipe for my ‘89 F150 tomorrow. A job for over the Easter weekend, I think. I did a patch job on it last year and it’s pretty much only the patch that’s left now lol. Going to be doing a lot of the jobs you have to freshen mine up this year - I have an 8’ bed with a high rise cap I have put back on to make a camper for trips this summer. Might even video the process - never done videos before, though. Worth a try, I guess. Thanks for the uploads 👍🏻
Another great job well done Dave. I recently caught two guys red handed in the process of stealing my catalytic converter at 2am. I won't say exactly what happened to them while we waited for the cops to turn up, . Turned out they had 17 other stolen cats in the back of their vehicle. D in the U.K.
my comment is a CAUTION to the car owner..... you go to a shop, and ask for a new muffler. The SHOP GUY is only focused on cutting off the old muffler, selling you and installing for you a new muffler. If you can be positioned kind of close to the shop area, keep an eye when the guy uses the cutting torch to cut off the old muffler. He will cut around the tail pipe, and will probably not cut thru all the way.... but he is not worried. Because he has a big metal mallet, and just bangs on the rusty muffler until it falls off. Sounds simple.... he installs and welds the new muffler and off you go..... but a few days later, you smell smoke or hear extra, different noise coming from your engine. That is because when the shop guy banged on your rusty muffler, the pounding caused a break or a crack at the engine side (on the EXHAUST MANIFOLD) that connects to the exhaust pipe that leads to the catalytic converter or to the muffler. So before the shop guy starts, tell him, use the torch but dont bang the heck out of my rusty muffler (just say: the last time I changed the muffler, the guy caused a crack in my exhaust manifold........
Great video, came here as I have to replace my own exhaust with no idea whatsoever how to do it and this video makes for a great tutorial on how to approach that task.
Dave, You seem to anticipate all of the problems my 2010 Ford Ranger is beginning to have. Now all I have to do is get off my butt and get them done. I'm not a spring chicken anymore so at times it's hard to even get down on the ground. But I am really enjoying your very instructional videos. Hey Dave thank you for this older video I thought they all had to be welded but now I know that they don't have to be and if I need to do a muffler I could do it myself now too thank you Dave
Thanks for the video! You made it clear and concise! I have a pretty clean edge on my pipe and it the muffler and tailpipe should just slip right on, just have a rusted clamp in the way I need to figure out how to get it off . Better paying $150 than what was quoted at a shop for $800! PIRATES!
Hey Dave great video. Can I make a suggestion? Do a before and after. I'm sure that truck was loud before you put the exhaust on. Keep up the great work. Loving the new channel.
Dave, another great video! Wish you showed us how it sounded before. That’s some fine work and sure looks nice. You can’t beat a new cat-back exhaust for $70. My friend, blessings to you and yours!

Awesome. It's more difficult with cars as they either need to be jacked up or put on a lift to get to them. I have a car that will need an exhaust system. Fortunately there are several manufacturers that make exhaust systems for classic cars that are ready made to fit if they are stock. The biggest problem is getting the head pipe off the exhaust manifolds without breaking the studs. I just don't trust Midas with my old vehicles.

You should have Sanded that Rust off the Muffler before putting in the New Pipe in 😊
The truth is, using clamps you don't get a 100% airtight seal, so it shouldn't make a big difference. The idea is, you want a quiet ride. And hopefully, no exhaust fumes in your cab. LoL!!
Did you have to retorque the clamps after driving? Because of the heat and vibration.
nope
Did you have to do any welding in this replacement or was that bracket on the pipe from the original setup?
You actually answered my question immediately after I posted it above 😅
cool dave i did,t know yea did cars too cheers
