bought this when it came out in england, london, shades record stores. i love everything about it. the cheesy doom art work. the out of beat drumming. the downtuned guitar sounds. the absolute rawness of this e.p. the insert was also really awesome. the art, the lyrics, the photos.......
I remember well when this came out, I loved metal and worked at a record store. But we laughed at it (still do) and Kerrang were merciless; when people pissed them off, they said "We just added your name to the Hellhammer mailing list!" Even when Celtic Frost was better (musically, much better, but actually worse vocals) they didn't let up, Kerrang were tough on them, but we already had Sabbath, Priest, Accept, Metallica, Slayer, Motorheard, Scorpions, even Dead Kennedys, Ramones, and punk all the VERY talented writers and players, and this was not! Even the names and descriptions (Drums were "hellish crossfire on wooden coffins"!!) were a joke...
This is the best!!! Still Loving it from the 80s till now. It was the first band i could play nearly all songs of on my 150 dollar electric guitar. I guess the neighbours really enjoyed my 100 watt amp!!!!
I kinda get why the press hated this. On paper its a mess, the drums drift out of timing, vox are erratic, the guitars dont do much other than buzz along (Well that and the low-rent erruption at the start of triumph of death), and the production sounds like a 4 track tape deck, I get it, its amateur. But still..... this shit is dark dark stuff, absolute classic 80s proto-black-metal. It sounds *dangerous*
Apart from all the evilness Toms Riffs are catchy af and quite groovy. You can dance to every hh/cf song but alot of people probably cant look past the ridiculousness of it all and just think its trash.
right after they came back from berlin, recording this, I heard "triumph of death" over the phone from a pre-release-cassette. I remember Ike (close friend of the band) saying that the drums sounded like coffins closing.
I sold hundreds of my personal collection, all first press, but a lot i refused to sell, this is one. Still hits the spot. It is a pity they were cheated by their recordcompanies.
Remember I bought this one in 1984 or 1985. My 2 favorite vinyl at that time was this and Sodoms In The Sign Of Evil that I also bought in the early 80s.
I was gonna comment on In The Sign, such of the same sound, something that was purely original. Destruction's first was different sound, but magical none the less.
i bought the same two albums also the same year you did hellhammer was the band that made me love death metal but hellhammer is still my most favorite band in the world because Tom warrior is a true genius and a great legend hail hellhammer
@@vinylrichie007 It does, Hellhammer/Celtic Frost derive a lot of influence from hardcore punk of the day. In fact, black metal, just like speed, thrash and death, has had a significant share of hardcore punk influence.
I've been listening to this since more or less it came out, and it never gets old, it's a classical piece of Metal, and i never get bored of listening. Am I morbid?
Had no idea they were from Switzerland! One of my childhood favorites from the mid 1980s. After I heard Hellhammer, Venom, Slayer, Corrosion of Conformity, and all things Black Metal, I didn't want to listen to anything else...
It was in plenty of metal magazines and fan zines, however it was vastly ridiculed at the time. Extreme metal wasn't a thing then, these guys were the pioneers
Canadian here, we traded all the tapes we could get our hands on and this was a big one! We had one friend who went to the UK once a year and we all gave him lists of albums, EPs and t-shirts to bring back and he always brought a years worth of Kerrang magazines too! We used these magazines to make new lists for his next trip. If you have an appetite for it you could get your hands on it!
first timw hearing this album, it sounds pretty much like celtic frost but less creative. i like the raw sound though edit: what i said may be true about the first two songs, but damn triumph of death is a fucking masterpiece

nearly all the riffs I play are from this

Nice power metal album.
40 years since they released this. incredible. aaarrrggghhh
TRIUMP OF DEATH............extreemee heavyy dark death, the suffering THE BLEEDING IS EXQUISITE,.......
In addition to pioneering black metal, some of Hellhammer's stuff is practically hardcore.
Even Celtic Frost early stuff reminds me of Black Flag or some early 80's hardcore or something.

I still dont get how they managed to sound evil yet fun at the same time.
Same way Venom did? Same way modern Dark Funeral, Dimmu Borgir does?
thats pop music
@@derunsympath That's what I'm saying. All 4 sound evil yet fun at the same time but for some reason to you Hellhammer isn't "pop" and the others are.
Stereo trick. They put evil to right and fun panned all the way to left. Your ears hear it in mono and you get evilfun hellhammer.

i once raided he fridge for left over chicken fingers, but I wouldn't call it apocalyptic-it fell well short of that!
Pioneers of black metal. Excellent band.
Best Black Metal Band
Damn. The Memories. I was 13. Priceless.
This might be the first death metal album. Listen to this then go listen to Mortician and tell me the influence isn't there.

If you haven't already, check out "Apokalyptic Raids" A Hellhammer "tribute" band. Excellent stuff.
