    Mr. Sausen - Thank you very much for making this video. I greatly appreciate it. I tore the tendon in my index finger and had to start playing traditional 6 months ago. I've been looking everywhere to find good traditional technique lessons, and yours is by far the best I have seen.
    I would love to hear more on your approach to traditional technique.
    Thank you again

      Chris Serpicø ; thank you so much Chris, for your kind feedback! Good luck with this and I hope your tendons heal fast! I have also injured my hand( s) let me tell ya, it's no fun as you know, especially if you're a musician!
      Let me know from time to time how this works for you, more vids to come!

      Neal Sausen Thank you very much. I appreciate it. Although my finger is not completely healed, it has gotten better. I am in 2 bands so I have been practicing non stop to try and get my traditional technique to the point where it is comfortable. The trouble is that I can't find many good videos about traditional technique. That's why I was so happy to find yours. Do you have any other videos on your channel regarding technique; Or, possibly videos from someone else that you would recommend?
      Also, I watched a few of your Solos and I just wanted to say I absolutely loved them. You are an incredible player. Both, in technique, and musicality. So thank you for those as well. They really inspire me to want to get better.
      Thanks again

    yes...please comment on sticks and pads today you like! Thanks and more videos...honor and respect for Freddie! I like these videos from real cats like you...drum ambassadors over 50 that do not jump on what is new and seeking a magic secret to...much too many young guys lacking historical wisdom today on Internet which is still a new medium for learning unlike any generation experienced. need to eat the melon and spit out the seeds and avoid over content info load

      Yes the pad in this video is a spectra sound simple rubber and Wood pad this company is no longer in existence so you’ll have to find a pad like it the same style and construction they’re out there sticks I’m using our Vic Firth drum Corps grade Scott Johnson models they have the rubber ball tip on the end it’s great rebound and it’s easier on the hands and wrists and the delicate nerve Endings and ligaments in the fingers and thumbs the river ball seems to absorb the shock of intense practicing! hope this helps

    best part is taking first year JUST on hand development over todays teach me beats...less is best...back in the day students learned at a lower less distracted pace to really develop hands,,,LOVE that pad! what is it? are you rotating the fingers one at a time or using all three at once? both?

      Jeff Porcaro Groove :thank you Jeff for kind words! "R. H." are 3 fingers together and "L. H." (t. g.) are BOTH WAYS! The top 2 fingers alternateing one at a time AND both fingers tapping together (at same time)! Hope this helps! Neal Sausen.

      Thank you for your vote of confidence Greg unfortunately due to financial restrictions this is really a fly by wire production if you even want to call it that it’s just done with a cell phone and we were In a music school practice room
      Someday When I Iget some financial backing I get more financially stable myself I will do a better production job Kudos to my close friend Mike Dubin who did the videoing of this lesson if you want to call it that

    What kinda stix, Are those Bunken 3S???? That's exactly what Shelley, Joe Morello, Chapin, Max Roach, all the cats used to practice with. Get's an enormous bounce. A big stick, but not that heavy, because it's maple. Dom Famularo took 3Ss, beefed up the shoulder just a bit, called it Dom's Pad Stick.

    I'm interested in taking lessons. I live in state of Washington. Any chance of doing this over the internet? I have played on and off for a long time, and am self taught basically, and 73 years old. Thank you. I wish we all could have taken from Freddie Gruber or Maury Spivak. Or Joe Morello, etc.

      Unfortunately Jeff, I’m not set up to give Internet lessons or Skype lessons at this time as I do not have Internet access in my home but as soon as I do require the ability to do Internet lessons I have your email on file and I will contact you and others who have voiced the same request so while I Do Not Teach now, Hopefully the situation will change in the near future and I will be in Contact with you and if you’re still interested we can take it from there thanks again for your request and your interest take care and good luck! We’re all going to need it!

    Mr. Sausen Should a beginner be able To go at a 200 beat ,I’m really struggling to go at this speed ? Thank you so much FR sharing what you have learned over the years....Howie

    • @nealsausen4651
      @nealsausen4651  3 года назад

      Dear Howard, no I would not recommend a beginner practicing the eighth Note finger Bounce at 200 BPM! You might want to start The Finger bounce at about 90 maybe to about 120 BPM and then gradually work your way up to 200 or more. The reason for this if you want to develop the fingers in a relaxed controlled manner you don’t want to overdo or overtax the delicate tendons and ligaments of the fingers like any form of exercise you want to start easy and slow and work your way up so I would recommend starting the eighthNote finger bounces at about 90 maybe 100 110 and then gradually get up to the higher speeds. You should experiment with the metronome settings and find a tempo that allows you to feel the finger Bounce yet allows you to feel it in a relaxed manner find A Tempo that Is slower but comfortable for you! Hope this helps

    • @nealsausen4651
      @nealsausen4651  Год назад

      200 eventually… yes! But start slow! Maybe you could practice 16th notes at between 80 and 100 and then up your tempo from there! the key to successful wrist and finger development is just o start at the tempo that you can feel the “bounce”of the stick like bouncing a basketball but yet your hands and fingers are relaxed and When you feel any tension back off on the tempo slow it down a bit and resume and then lift yourself up a little by little Tempo Wise

    Hello again Mr. Sausen -
    Unfortunately, for the past month or so, I’ve been getting shooting pains in my left forearm and bicep.
    I’m not sure what to make of this because I started practicing traditional roughly 8 months ago and never really had any problems with pain. But now, I get them any time I try to practice, even when I play very slow, simple strokes.
    Do you have any idea what could be causing this?
    Any advice or help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.
    Thanks again.

      Chris Serpicø ; Hi Chris, Neal Sausen here.
      Sorry to hear about you arm issues!
      Practicing "Trad.Grup" of course will not cause this pain, if it did no one could play with trad. grip. I'm not a doctor, but it's possible what you are describing could be a " PINCHED NERVE"?! Maybe?! You must consult with your doctor or a legit HAND SPECIALIST! I highly recommend this, tell him (her) everything! Back off on the practicing until you can determine what's going on with your hand/arm!
      Let me know what you find out!

    • @CipherSerpico
      @CipherSerpico 6 лет назад

      Neal Sausen Yes, I definitely think that it is caused by either my previous injury or poor technique.
      I really appreciate your help though. Thanks again.
