"Duke Energy needs to move large amounts of rainwater through the Catawba River System." www.qcnews.com/news/u-s/north-carolina/mecklenburg-county/flash-flood-emergency-for-mountain-island-lake/
Fundamentally these people live by the river and on the known flood plain. Flood Plains are there so the when there is to much water in the river the water has a place to go. Are any of these people unaware that they live on flood plain or what a flood plain does?
Yes. But in cases like these vs. rich people with beach houses, poorer people often live in flood plains because it is cheaper and then they’re stuck there because no one will buy their house due to damage and/or it being in a flood zone. They have trouble moving then. If you look up the history, it’s unfortunately been a problem for a long time. The people I DO criticize are the individuals who are able to evacuate and choose not to.
The spaghetti charts, incorporating the accumulation of about 30 computer models, showed a path for Helene right over Atlanta, and then curling west into central TN, RIGHT UP TO THE TIME THAT HELENE CROSSED INTO GA. (I live on that predicted path, so I was up all night checking multiple sources.) That path would have put western NC in the periphery of the storm by about 200-300 miles. It was only later that some TV meteorologists started to notice that the real path was diverging to the east. (Special credit to the middle-aged black meteorologist on 11 Alive TV). -- The path of this hurricane was a dramatic demonstration of the weaknesses of computer models for predicting weather and climate. I don't know much about Duke Energy. Maybe it's a crap company, but in this case, they have the overwhelming consensus of experts in climate as a basis for what they did or didn't do. -- We've had plenty of evidence of the fallibility of experts over the past few years, but the establishment media have denounced that evidence as conspiracy theories. So if you want to blame Duke Energy, blame them for trusting the experts too blindly. I don't know the company; it may be a crap company, but in this case they're no more guilty than the Biden administration in enforcing various mandates that have since proved to be the opposite of correct in multiple ways.
Not sure this is true. it's my understanding they started to move water down stream the moment Helene became certain. It takes more time then people realize to effectively lower water levels. At some point you have to remember this is like a 1 in a thousand years flood. I have no dog in this fight...but I live in TN near TVA and along the river....and I do understand the issues. I can only say without these dams, and Duke this area would likely be much worse and more lives lost. Better hope Duke can keep these dams working and not have a major failure. Wait on the blame game, and pray for the Duke employees to do their jobs well today/tonight.
@@SargNickFurydon't we all hope folks are doing their jobs well? I find it true, with exceptions, that it's usually the people on the bottom of the corporate ladder that bust tail while the ones at the top are only concerned with the bottom line. As well, it takes too much time to render practical decisions. Duke Energy should be investigated. In the meantime, residents deal with rate hikes.
They will be ok if they can get to higher ground. They only have what they can carry, unlike the elderly and homeowners who have worked all their lives to have a home. They can't pick up their house and carry it, and if they were living on social security they probably don't have home owners insurance. The homeless will be taken better care of than those people. Homeless people will be fine, some choose to live that way and the ones that don't want to be homeless will get out of that situation.
@@hardhead5700 fortunately my family is safe. We're waiting to hear if my sister's grandma's house is still standing in Ashville. Her friend lost her house in Florida. Always sketchy during big rainfall events when you live on a street called 'Riverside Dr'. It was a risk for these people to move there and they are paying for it and will continue to do so in the future. Also, there are thousands of places all over the country where local zoning/permit boards allow people to build houses where houses should never be built. These boards need to grow a pair and tell homeowners and developers that land is not allowed for building. As for any structures on Riverside Dr., the city should buy all the land out (it never should have allowed structures there anyway) bulldoze all the structures and turn it back into natural flood plain. The residents can then take their settlement and purchase a home/land on higher ground.
This news segment is so ridiculous. Rainfall did exceed expectations. Please do this job, then tell us how easy it is reduce lake levels quickly, then tell us where you made it disappear to.🙄
Thank our lucky stars Donald Trump will do away with The National Hurricane Service and The National Weather Service and NOAA, If we don't know about them things, they will NEVER HAPPEN!!!

Duke Energy failed a lot of people today. Their excuse for not being proactive sounds pathetic.

Gates should have been opened
Knew it was coming
Then of it did not do much people would complain they opened the gates.
@@mikepalmer1971 I agree 100% 👍 people on the lake always be yapping about water levels let just hope it don't fail
Agree wholeheartedly with this guy. Duke Energy could've made a difference easily.

I'm from Colorado and the weather scares me. I feel really bad for the homeless people
I feel the same way. What will happen to the homeless if they can't get to their dealers? It will be horrific.
