When I initially started off in the medical writing field nearly 7 years ago, having a PhD was not a requirement to progress in the medical writing field. However, I have recently observed a trend where more job descriptions for senior medical writing roles are mentioning PhD as a 'nice to have' requirement but not necessarily a 'need to have' requirement. Therefore, I feel that a PhD would be beneficial but not essential to progress in medical writing. However, my response to your question is limited by the fact that I have worked as a medical writer in USA alone and not in any other country. Therefore, I would urge you to look into senior medical writing requirements in your specific geography and make an informed decision about the PhD. Happy to continue this conversation over LinkedIn. Being a medical doctor is NOT a prerequisite for becoming a medical writer. One of the most interesting aspects about medical writing is that the field attracts people with very different academic and professional backgrounds.

(2) There is also a great health writing program offered by Health Writer Hub based in Australia, but the course can be taken from anywhere. (3) If you are interested in a freelance career, I strongly recommend doing some research on the course offered by Emma Hitt, who is a medical writing entrepreneur and thought leader in the freelance world. (4) If you are interested in breaking into medical writing using your background in biomedical sciences, we have a great program offered by the cheeky scientist organization. Google 'CSA MWO' for the details.
