Not merely a wonderful bassist but a lovely human being who graced the jazz world with his presence. Be assured that he brought a great deal of listening pleasure to a great number of jazz fans around the world.
@@musiciansvanguard wow thank you everyone, I am so proud☺️ If anyone is interested, Los Angeles Times did an article about Red and his wife Dunya becoming pregnant with my dad and giving him up for adoption in the early 50’s because they didn’t want to raise him in “the industry” I think is what I was told by family. My father was Red’s only child, and he wrote a song about him called “Love’s Not Only The Blues”. Search his name and LA Times and it should come up. I am often told that my grandfather was one of the greatest bassists of all time, and it blows my mind! I feel so honored!
50 plus years ago , Clark was sitting 10 feet from where I am right now . he played with my college jazz band and we became long time friends. I loved him as a man and a musician . I saw him in the Vanguard around 2005 and I oiled his horns as we chatted before the show. What a wonderful memory . I miss you CT. Keep on keepin on ! See ya again .
I love it!! These guys are just jammin on this classic tune. Clark terry plays with so much nuance and style. One of my favorite trumpeters. Thanks for puttin this up man.
Mr. Marsalis, I’m 65 years old and can’t wait till I get old enough to play like these guys do. The bass, Flugelhorn or trumpet duo is something I have enjoyed with some really good bass players. It is how I roll now….but just with My Sunny Bass on RUclips now. I enjoy a work out almost every day with My Sunny Bass when my migraines let me. And with Ellington and Strayhorn my life keeps on track swinging away…..I’m am ok with being old fashioned that way. It keeps me connected to a great history of America music. All the best wishes to you!
Yeah, but I got to hear it in my room while grown ups we're practicing fun down in my living room. And it was art and gets better with memories. They used to play hobo flats I'm sorry CT is gone.
There should also be 2 fifth tuned deeper double basses in 2 other tunings: G0, D1, A1 & E2 (the other Italian fifth tuning); and F0, C1, G1 & D2 (the other Cajun tuning). And the 2 upright bass pickups should be added for more bass. German & French style bows included.
"Take the A Train" (Strayhorn) Red Mitchell bass, Clark Terry fluglehorn and muted trumpet conversation with himself and Red, ZDF Jazz Club. It is wild to hear Red playing a bass tuned in fifths instead of fourths - much larger range - and his interesting double-stop chords, in such good intonation.
Isn´t this just wonderfull - swing, joy professionalism and superb music skills, and Mr. Terry do not need to play high notes, he is interesting to listen to - always. What a perfect retirement!
I love when Red teams up with another great player for a duo. You guys should check out Red and Jim Hall's album they made together. Just two dudes jamming. Also, the double horn trick Terry's using is totally badass. Haven't seen it before.
There was a fantastic video on youtube years ago of this duo playing Hey Mr. Mumbles. It's my favorite performance of it I've ever heard, but it was taken down and I've missed it for years. I THINK it was from this same concert that aired on 3sat. The seating arrangement, stage and lighting look exactly as I remember. Do you have the whole concert, and could you upload the rest?
I suspect that Red just tuned his low string down to a lower pitch, akin to the tuning of a contrabass, and left the other strings at their normal pitches because his fingerings indicate they are tuned in fourths. -- FIVE YEARS LATER _ > Well, I was sure wrong about THAT. Red's bass is tuned in fifths. SEE MORE from wiser folks than me, below.
make no mistake red mitchell was a bass giant.he was a virtuoso .total command of his instrument.i often think he should have been a horn player but thats just an observation..ray brown nhop mraz swainson and a few more were fabulous soloists but more at home in a rythmn section enviroment than red. clark terry is a trumpet great one of the very best.many thaks.
Someone else told me C-D-G-A. If Red used low "A" (minor third below a contra-bass), that string would be very loose and wobbly and would not project much sound...
I started recording my original songs at a local studio recently. The line-up is bass, drums, and two vocalists. I've had several people (most of them musicians) tell me that I need - NEED - to put some guitar and/or keyboards on it. Ummm...how about FUCK OFF? I thought music was art. I'm going for something, I have a different vision for my music. You don't NEED guitar or keys. Perhaps they haven't heard of Colin Hodgkinson, the band Clatter, Dos...or Red Mitchell
Vi manca la batteria, il pianoforte, la chitarra, il sax, la tromba, il trombone, il clarinetto? Ma non sentite che c'è tutto? Missing drums, piano, guitar, sax, trumpet, trombone, clarinet? Can't your hear it's all in there?
That’s my grandpa, Red Mitchell! I am the daughter of Red’s son Allan. ❤️🎼🎹🎺
You should be proud!!
Not merely a wonderful bassist but a lovely human being who graced the jazz world with his presence. Be assured that he brought a great deal of listening pleasure to a great number of jazz fans around the world.
I loved his duet performance of “My Romance” with Chet Baker. Check it out on RUclips!!
He's da man! Brilliant musician. One of the all time greatest bass players.

Red Mitchell is truly an awesome musician with a very unique ound.
I love that fifth tuned upright bass. God bless him.
that's what it is, wow, ii was thinking he had a unique style
They should have a Cajun fifth tuned (Bb0, F1, C2 & G2) upright jazz bassist. That should be awesome.
fantastic. master . Terry & Red Mitchel.
I love it!! These guys are just jammin on this classic tune. Clark terry plays with so much nuance and style. One of my favorite trumpeters. Thanks for puttin this up man.

DThanks you tube for presenting Clark for me, he is great/.
Brilliant , Red Mitchell , the unsung giant of D-bass .
Their record..TO DUKE & BASIE is a keeper. Get it as it some of the best music they made together.
Thank you for posting this. What a treat to see this.
Magnific duo play great music!
I love the way they're just having a chat though the first bass solo!
This is the most beautifulI peace of art
ever seen.
Yeah, but I got to hear it in my room while grown ups we're practicing fun down in my living room. And it was art and gets better with memories. They used to play hobo flats I'm sorry CT is gone.
Straordinari tutti e due: Clark Terry e Red Mitchell.

Those guys put me in such a great mood.
So....so.....so.....so good. Just two musicians and it sounds completely full.
Isn´t this just wonderfull - swing, joy professionalism and superb music skills, and Mr. Terry do not need to play high notes, he is interesting to listen to - always.
What a perfect retirement!
The Masters at Work / Play.♫♪♫♫ My Favorite Subway Train i New York City.♫♪♫♫ Thanks.
Red has to be one of the greatest d/bass jazz players ever, Terry has chops to die for. Thanks man, great video.
Кларк Терри просто гений корнета, а Митчел нетранспонированными импровизациями превратил бас в живое существо. Чудо! Спасибо за память о великих

Amazing,
He is Tune like a Cello.
That's right. A full octave lower. Mr. Mitchell used special strings "customized" for "fifth tuning".
Very Nice dialog.
Celestial music by two geniuses
Red Mitchel, el primer bajista que, en mi juventud, cuando tocaba con Lalo Schifrin y Gato Barbieri me re emocionó.
Ambidextrous ............How Does he DO THAT, CLARK is TOO MUCH!!

My hero’s!
Actually that quote is attributed to Lawrence Welk on his TV show.
And now, Ladies and Gentlemen, we're going to play that old Duke Ellington standard: 'Take a Train.'
Lawrence Welk

By the way, "Take the A Train" is in the key of C, and the last note Red plays is an open low string on his bass, which I suspect is a "C".
That is correct. I played it on My Double Bass in C.♫♪♫♪ I Love This Video./// Thanks.
i am actually red mitchells grand son my grandmother was diane mitchell
A masterly solo from Red. But then, what do you expect from a master?...
I believe an octave lower than cello ADGC. Spiracore make bass strings called Red Mitchell's designed to use that tuning.
Magnífico
Red was great. I had tickets to his last consert in Stockholm bit misses it. À month later he was dead

wow just wow
Grandissimi , in due sembrano in dieci.
@exjazzbassbaz trumpet on the left, flugelhorn on the right
Great!
💛🌼😃🌳
Magic :)
Rhetoric masterpiece
I never heard CT play a 'bad' solo on either horn.
Red tuned in Fifths starting in '66.
He played bass on the Pink Panther Theme, lol.
Très trèes bon
Someone else told me C-D-G-A.
If Red used low "A" (minor third below a contra-bass), that string would be very loose and wobbly and would not project much sound...
He uses a fifth tuning with low A. At 3:42 you can see him play the open high F# string.
It’s a high A with a low C.
The toughest part about the 2 horn trick is keeping the Harmon in.
!!!!!!!!
What pitches?

the bass sounded very low to me..then i realized that he is tuned in fifths..C G D A (instead of the traditional E A D G)

: ))))
Why?
"Jazz isn't dead, it just smells funny." Zappa
what?
