Beautiful trip! I love how the rural parts of Japan look (even if I could never live there). Grassy tracks, tunnels of rock and tunnels of trees, shinkansen tracks with weird concrete pillars, driving through people's backyards, rice paddies, a quiet coastline, the spooky station of Akase, hazy mountains in the distance, palm trees, slowly overtaking cars -- only to be overtaken again at the next station... this video has it all.
These are sprung or weighted switches either end of a passing loop on a single track line, it's quite common practice in many railways around the world. It avoids the need for manually moving the switches at the passing loop, trains passing in either direction will automatically be routed to the left passing track initially. As the train gets permission to leave the loop the weight of the train acts against the weight or spring to move the switch blades of the trailing point over. Note at 24:05 the switch stand on the left with the white S to denote this is a sprung switch.
地上ホームの時代の熊本駅、懐かしい。今は駅は高架化され、キハ31も廃車になった。
