>Be me >Gets attracted to a human red flag >Starts writing self-fulfillment fic I'll never publish >It turns into probably the most thought provoking shit I've ever typed the keys with >Still procrastinates and never publishes in fear of people harassing me for my insanity
As Aristotle once said "no great mind ever existed without a touch of madness." Publish it. Then advertise the shit out of it on the premise of how mad it is.
Not me turning a dumb Obey Me fanfic into an enormous complex epic now fully unconnected to Obey Me and changing Lucifer’s character and role three times over because somehow the supporting characters are more interesting than my main characters…
So. Fucking. Real. I will delete a scene, edit a bunch of stuff from before leading up to the scene, tinker a bit with whatever portion I left before the deleted scene, and then realize that my net amount of words is the exact same despite all the work 😭 I think I have to start telling myself that more words doesn’t mean more quality but I just have a hard time editing and deleting in general, especially now that my current project is the longest thing I’ve stuck to and has a foreseeable end (regardless of how I’m gonna get there).
One of my most popular fics is my most self-indulgent. WRITE YOUR SELF-INDULGENT FICS!!!! More often than not, other people will like it too! And even if they don’t, so what??? Its YOURS.
This!!!!! You know the best part? If you have fun making something, IT SHOWS!!! The overall quality of a piece of art will often (in my experience) increase when it’s obvious the creators were having a blast-that’s one of the reasons I love the movie Mamma Mia! And I’ve experienced it myself, too-some of my best recent writing has been for an extremely self-indulgent crossover my longtime bestie and I are coauthoring!!
All my stories are self-indulgent, they have almost no screentime for canon characters and all the screentime for my ocs. Other than those Dialovers Digimon aus I wanna write as stories, those are all main characters but no original tamers because of the storyline.
Here here. I remember I once got the idea to write a Zootopia fanfic that was a blatant rip-off of Lethal Weapon. The experience taught me a lot about writing, establishing some techniques I use for my original works, plus I think the actual fic works
My wip/fic is made out of: -Spite for the fans -Abhoring from sleep -too much self-loathing to be healthy -headcannons I will never hold outside this fic -and a desire to put one specific character through a meat grinder
spite for the fans is so real 😭 I don’t really like the majority of the people in my main fandom, a bunch of them agree on this horrible theory that has no evidence and get personally offended/gang up on you if you disagree
I’m making a whole AU out of spite for the original novel because the contents aren’t treated like they should be. It’s okay, you can laugh, it’s funny.
my two characters started out as characters in a fanfiction, before I realized, I hated writing fanfiction, tried to turn it into my own work, then realized I wanted to do a genre shift and now they’re completely 100% original
I started with a strange mashup of Ryu from BoF3, Tristam from FFMQ, then shipping that character with my self-insert, and it’s been through hundreds of iterations over the years but I finally have an actual plot and they both have little resemblance to most of the source material.
How I came up with my WIP: 1. Chose a headcanon I liked about a character being obsessed with coffee 2. *watched it spiral into a plot-fic about betrayal, drugging, and deep family trauma all because of that STUPID TAG 3. Found a song I liked and named it after it! Yeah. I’ve got…feelings about this fic 😭
The ingredients of my wip: 1. The foundation, a single little theory that made me think too much 2. Make a actually somewhat good story off of that foundation. 3. It still needs some stuff fixed but im very proud of it. This one fanfiction based off a single theory will be my magnum opus.
One of my favorite fics as a teenager I now remember from the author’s notes alone because she was this 30-something soccer mom who would write them as full-blown arguments she was having with Reno from FFVII and they were as entertaining as the fic itself.
True. Or that moment when you aren't sure if the sentance is correct because of words that look the same in all 3 diferent languages but mean compleatly different things. Example: Sol Sol in France: Dirt, Ground Sol in Spanish: Sun Sol in English: Sadly out of luck (in slang) None of those are my actual language and they keep confusing me, because of how simmilar they can get. Especially since French and Spanish are really rudimentary for me.
Omg im german and even though I speak english fluently and learned it first, whenever the grammar police pull up, i just hit them with the its my second language cause it technically is 😅
Me: writing a simple, straight-forward story about some silly little guy, at the beginning. How it's going now: said silly little guy is now part of the most unnecessarily complex world imaginable (also tons of side-characters that i tend to flesh-out, almost too much), has a very elaborate backstory and i have tons of documents about his specific relationships to all sorts of characters... all of this, while only having written 5 chapters of the actual story, AT MOST.
I'm not a BookTok girlie but I don't understand how people act like it's the death of literature, as if it's not the same wish-fulfillment slop horny moms have been reading since the Twilight days.
0:40 This is why allowing your work to sit at least overnight if not for a few days and then read it aloud with a program/read it out lout to yourself is a good idea. Your brain automatically skips mistakes when reading in your head.
As to OOC fic ideas... my story canonically includes a multiverse. If something doesn't fit one version of the character, I just go to another universe where it does.
Original writing and not fanfic, but the Dark Souls second health bar is me right now, even though I know I'm less than 20% done with the story. It just keeps ballooning into new ideas, plot points and character motivations! And to blatantly brag to strangers here: every time I update my partner on my word count (28,000 words and growing, not including the 18 pages of brainstorming notes so far and three maps I've created 🤦🏻♀️), he tells me "Wow! I'd've given up 3 months ago." (I unintentionally started writing this during NaNoWriMo and have been working on it for less than a month. I'm proud of myself. This is the most extensive and well-planned out thing I've EVER written, and I had to write a thesis in college.)

6:14 'filing on the serial numbers' is something I've heavily considered doing lol. I write exclusively original stuff and always have a million ideas for it but have no ideas for fan fiction, but im painfully aware fan fiction is a great way to be seen as an author. Wish I had the ability to write fan fiction sometimes :(
how i came up with my fanfiction : 1. whoa these characters are cool 2. hey they’re kinda gay ngl 3. i bet there’s so much fanfiction about them on wattpad right 4. right 5. why am i standing in a dry ass desert 6. okay fine if none of yall are gonna do it i will 7. oh cheese and crackers i’m obsessed and love them too much 8. wait am i feeding their barren fanclub right now 9. wait am i their god 10. teehee time to make my babies suffer again
1:00 the struggle is real. the more you read your draft, the more you become blind to it. I find it really helps to reframe the text: change the font, text size, read on your phone when you normally write on your laptop (or vice versa) and read it aloud! finding a good text to speech extension has been literally lifechanging for me. i've caught so many typos
6:25 I actually have done this (not the master plan, just putting on the serial numbers). I wrote an oc story that was so good I really wanted to post it, but felt exactly that: no one is gonna read it :( so I inserted fandom characters in it. But then it kinda ruined it so I never posted it
The life of a writer is an odd, often confusing, one. That said...I'm deadly serious if anything happens so bad as to impair my writing ability, I'd rather be unplugged.
My wip is made out of: - transdimensional conspiracy boards - a 32-hour playlist - and a profound desire for my characters to have *good* things that is forever at war with my proclivity for chaos
6:02 i actually did that but like back and forth. like i have a set of characters who were originally for a wings of fire elsewhere fic that i eventually turned into an original story and then i lost motivation to make the 6 season long animated series i wanted to make it into and instead got into homestuck and promptly turned the characters into fantrolls because i thought it was fitting (the original story's setting and the homestuck trolls' society was similar) 8:33 when listening to that part i was like "damn that sounds like something ive read before..." and that is because this happens in homestuck because of course it does, what DOESN't happen in homestuck. (the intermission where andrew hussie starts directly talking to caliborn...)
Fun fact: I procrastinated on watching this video, so I can procrastinate on drawing, while procrastinating on scripting my video, while procrastinating making my characters pages, while procrastinating my story. I am the master procrastinater
9:35 im drawing while listening to this in the background and yeah i gotta agree that making stuff feels so good and brings me so much joy, im not even working on a wip i started a while ago, i literally started it yesterday but working on it still makes me so happy because im watching pixels on a screen become a creation of mine before my very eyes
Recipe for my WIP: 1. Approximately three tape rings that I painted while bored in art class 2. An overactive imagination 3. An idea I had about a billion years ago that haunts my mind occasionally 4. Lots of motivation and zero places to put it
My WIP fanfic is made out of: - random, very strong impulse to write - jesus christ these two cuties did NOT get enough screen time - Idea came from a drawing first - super hyped to write the middle of the story, but the intro is a drag - I want to fluster the hell out of both of them!
4:41 this happened to me once, my mum asked me what I was writing and I for some reason let her read it. It was cute and fluffy and I’m still happy with it but I’ll never be able to forget that my mum has read gay fanfiction
Ingredients to my current WIP: -A single dumb crack theory that kinda makes sense -the protag of the game -two characters so hopelessly in love that even the devs ship it -a memory-loss plotline that I hope isn't annoying -weird dream stuff -A desire to make the dumb crack theory a reality
5:50 ALL FALLS DOWN FROM CHAPLIN. one of my characters is the personal assistant of a celebrity that wants to expose her for fame, and all falls down is THE SONG! like that's HER!!!
I need a whole video about that last post. I have several “not intended for distribution” practice fics that I indulge in writing whenever I can’t find the motivation for writing at my self-imposed standards. The ingredients of one of these pseudo-crack fics: - crossover between a popular RPG and a slightly niche horror game - post post game, specifically post another fic - what if [unhinged sociopath] survived? - unwanted cannibalistic desires
The biggest 900iq move is to write a 100% original story you've even developed entire books on obscure lore and maps for, and never showing it to anyone because the last time you did it was torn to tiny little shreds, pissed on, and being personally insulted as a bonus, which made you develop an irrational fear of having your works disliked and asociated to your person
Earlier I made a poll in 3 separate discord servers asking what people thought about 2nd person narration, because I had written my visual novel entirely in 2nd person up to this point and was getting insecure about it. Everyone said it was fine
Ha ha, ha ha, no I’m not procrastinating what are you talking about?? Ughh I’m writing a fic and I’m SO worried everyone will hate it and me and everything I stand for if I post it. Writing is fun!
My WIP was made through a healthy combination of: 1. Having a dream that made a sense for the world it was in, but wouldn't work as a story plot 2. Quickly thrown together characters that I accidentally projected onto a little *too* hard 3. A crap ton of daydreaming and doodling And 4. Already having an unhealthy obsession with the source material
6:27 Yes! I actually done that quite a few times. Like, I think of scenarios as some pre bought mold I can just fit any character inside with the proper backstorying. So yeah, I've written fics that are so far removed from cannon they might as well be original, used my own dreams as scenes, things that happened to me Etc etc. I don't skip opportunities.
6:15 i actually do know of an example of this, it's an old Voltron fic called Watercast. The story was the author's original work that was retrofitted to be Voltron, and they planned to eventually turn it back to an original work and publish it
the 5:43 to 6:01 sections is so real😭😭 how did I write my characters as Worlds smallest violin, love me anyway by Chappell roan and turn the lights off, and subway repectively😭😭😷
I was a young high schooler obsessed with Animal Crossing. One day, I was watching an AC fan film. The next day, I was watching it, like, seven more times. And the day after that, I was blatantly ripping it off and throwing all my most messed-up ideas at it like a dartboard to see what would stick. This is how my WIP came to be, and I love it dearly. :)
10:41 "Man... this (canon event) could have been done so much better... I get why it wasn't, but the potential is there..." "But I also don't want to just... write a fix fic, that would be boring, and people tend to frown on those." "I guess... I could allude to a divergence from canon a lot earlier, that would result in a different path." "... fuck it, I'm currently metaphorical balls deep into a hyper fixation on (other media/genre) let's mash the two together! That also gives me an excuse to be vague about the divergence point!"
10:37 Well, lets see. 1- add one 200 songs long playlist full of folk, country and anything and feels like youre turning into a cawboy 2- Firearms with any type of weapon shoved right in 3- Nine chapters yet 100k words
Luckily my dad never asks to read my fics. Instead it’s my mother and grandmother. Also the 27 words thing is so true: I’ll either write 27 words or 14,000. Usually it’s somewhere in between, but the extremes always get me.
"Listening to Music while writing helps me find the mood of my story" Me, who listens to Symphonic Death Metal, Drone, and Breakbeat: This... this can only turn out good...
because of this video (i originally typed chapter im sobbing) i managed to figure out the last little main plot for one of the chapters. now to... actually write things... oh god why.
I get so stuck on scenes that I have rewritten the first three chapters of the book I’m writing multiple times. I’ve finally gotten to the point that I’m mostly happy enough with them to move on for a while. I also just had to search up what boiling water poured into someone’s eyes does for a character. I sat there trying to figure out the least threatening and weird way to type my question into a search bar. My friends are very concerned for my characters.
2:37 ESTUANS INTERIUS IRA VEHEMENTI!!! (I learned the lyrics so I could sing it in the shower lol) also while I'm here, does anyone else sort of go into an almost trancelike state when they're writing super emotional scenes, or is that just me? like i'll just be sitting there staring at the google doc, almost completely unmoving except for my hands on the keyboard, 100% focused on the scene.
It's the way you posted this as I was procrastinating abt the last part of my fanfic (the middle bc i hate writing the bridges to the scenes i actually started the fic for) that I have yet to start writing
my WIP is made out of spite that what I wanted to read one night seemingly didn't exist (im not the most experienced at finding fics so maybe it does, somewhere. i did find like 3 versions of what i wanted but they were all abandoned at the first or second chapter). and a hell of a lot of cheesy tropes. and a great backstory that im so jealous went to this cheesy trope fic that I'm already planning more meaningful fics in the same setting.
I need to write my weird self-insert fic about MC living in a world made of multiple fictional worlds but actually there's a crapton of worldbuilding about stuff like "What happened to money?", "What happened to earth?" Or how Fox is now in couple with Wolf.
4:43 I mostly write in a language that I did most the base work for. Neither parent knows it. The downside is that I often have no beta readers. I also can't really talk about my written works much which some of that written work is kinda major to me. I'm even getting clothes, based off this one book I wrote, made for me because I liked the designs so much. But on the hand I am one of the few major writers of in language and therefore am likely setting the standard for writing. Like that'd make me the best beta reader! Also, I can write anything in class without anyone being able to judge me. I also have a somewhat good understanding of how language works, and so I do pretty well at writing English and rarely ever worry about my grade in that class. (Sorry for any errors)
4:41 I was working on a warrior cats fanfiction when I was 11 and handed almost every chapter to my mom because I was just so proud of myself. It had the usual Warriors OC story stuff - cats and kittens abusing and killing each other, childbirth descriptions (the books had them all the time so I felt the need to add some) and melodramatic romance. She said that I did a great job and that my MC and her 2 sisters reminded her of how she and her sisters always acted as kids. Later I suddenly thought that the whole fic was cringe (it definitely was), didn't even finish it and deleted it not only from Wattpad, but also from the device it was on. Mom wasn't happy about it and said that everything was going great and that I should have at least asked her. (She was right, I still regret deleting it because actually reading this masterpiece again would have been a hilarious experience. Don't delete your old work pls 🌸) Maybe I would still let her read my fics, if I had any 🥲 (Perfectionism gets in the way too much)
I started a story with it being a fanfiction of Vinny Vinesauce's Tomodachi Life series, eventually realized that I liked the concept because I just liked the idea of a cast of characters that live in the same place despite the fact they don't even belong in the same genre together. Like, here's a hard boiled detective with a drinking problem and a dead wife and kids, and here is his best friend, Hamburger head. Eventually, I just kept developing the concept of an island populated by weird aliens, and now I have a science fantasy thriller where a human girl has to uncover a government conspiracy in a parallel dimension full of wizards, aliens, and the occasional robot. The only parts left that resemble the Tomodachi Life series is the main setting being an island, and the main villain is named Vincent and has white hair.
I’ve got two wips, and one is the favorite child. I am, unfortunately, an equally absent parent for both of them. One started from a deranged scribble of a sentence and the other I really wanted to write a specific troupe, but it just kept evolving. The troupe is no longer included
7:46 me for literally the past 5 months, give or take (i do not wish to discuss how entering the 9-1-1 fandom this summer has amplified my mental and emotional illness 😊😊😊)
What if I outsmart the system by playing this while I write my fanfic?? I think I'm going to accidentally procrastinate while trying to do this. I don't know anymore guys
4:40 Y'see. Ya just can't tell your family that you write fanfiction. Too dangerous. Also, there's a good chance your Marvel fanfic will turn out to be a metaphor for your relationship with your parents and when they see how you translated that to the fic, they'll feel simultaneously complimented and insulted. Don't let your parents read your fanfic
Jesus CHRIST you literally posted this right as I closed my google doc
Lmao
Thou hath summoned the upload
I JUST opened the doc and saw this lmaooo

I do something called quantum procrastination. I write 500 words, realize I hate what I just wrote, delete, then repeat the process.
So. Fucking. Real. @blackjackdaw7865I believe Sol is also a Roman Sun God.
@erorr.sanitynotavailable6937 probably why it means sun in Spanish. Since they are romanic.
Omg im german and even though I speak english fluently and learned it first, whenever the grammar police pull up, i just hit them with the its my second language cause it technically is 😅

@blueaceospadesreal I can't go to sleep without creating a story in my head and getting to the main part of it at least😂😭
@persialionheart LITERALLY SAME LMAO it's why it takes me hours to go to sleep bc my brain refuses to shut off and just keep daydreaming 😭😭

Okay but one of my fave things, unironically, about reading old school fics, is the author talking with the characters in the authors notes

6:02 i actually did that but like back and forth. like i have a set of characters who were originally for a wings of fire elsewhere fic that i eventually turned into an original story and then i lost motivation to make the 6 season long animated series i wanted to make it into and instead got into homestuck and promptly turned the characters into fantrolls because i thought it was fitting (the original story's setting and the homestuck trolls' society was similar)
8:33 when listening to that part i was like "damn that sounds like something ive read before..." and that is because this happens in homestuck because of course it does, what DOESN't happen in homestuck.
10:27 birds. Literally just birds.
Yes, I’m a furry
Recipe for my WIP:
1. Approximately three tape rings that I painted while bored in art class
2. An overactive imagination
3. An idea I had about a billion years ago that haunts my mind occasionally
4. Lots of motivation and zero places to put it
Writers watching memes about writing instead of actually writing:
5:15 that explains why i havent been writing consistently. My OC's do NOT want to go through that finale again
My WIP fanfic is made out of:
- random, very strong impulse to write
- jesus christ these two cuties did NOT get enough screen time
- Idea came from a drawing first
- super hyped to write the middle of the story, but the intro is a drag
- I want to fluster the hell out of both of them!
4:41 this happened to me once, my mum asked me what I was writing and I for some reason let her read it. It was cute and fluffy and I’m still happy with it but I’ll never be able to forget that my mum has read gay fanfiction
Ingredients to my current WIP:
-A single dumb crack theory that kinda makes sense
-the protag of the game
-two characters so hopelessly in love that even the devs ship it
-a memory-loss plotline that I hope isn't annoying
-weird dream stuff
-A desire to make the dumb crack theory a reality
Currently watching this as I wait for my cowriter’s schedule to open up so they can write more of the fic we’re writing together XD
Hey, Tonky, I've been a fan of yours for a while. This is an awesome series. Please make more. Please and thank you.
5:50 ALL FALLS DOWN FROM CHAPLIN. one of my characters is the personal assistant of a celebrity that wants to expose her for fame, and all falls down is THE SONG! like that's HER!!!
I saw you posted this and decided to work on my WIP before watching it. I feel POWERFUL 😂
watching this as i daydream about my wip
I need a whole video about that last post.
I have several “not intended for distribution” practice fics that I indulge in writing whenever I can’t find the motivation for writing at my self-imposed standards.
The ingredients of one of these pseudo-crack fics:
- crossover between a popular RPG and a slightly niche horror game
- post post game, specifically post another fic
- what if [unhinged sociopath] survived?
- unwanted cannibalistic desires
The biggest 900iq move is to write a 100% original story you've even developed entire books on obscure lore and maps for, and never showing it to anyone because the last time you did it was torn to tiny little shreds, pissed on, and being personally insulted as a bonus, which made you develop an irrational fear of having your works disliked and asociated to your person
4:11 got way too real 🤣
7:08 this shut down my arteries
I’m sorry you had to read this
7:53 Chris Mclean wrote this
thank you for the memes
Earlier I made a poll in 3 separate discord servers asking what people thought about 2nd person narration, because I had written my visual novel entirely in 2nd person up to this point and was getting insecure about it. Everyone said it was fine
this video really spoke to me as someone who’s planning and writing a 100+ chapter oc x oc self indulgent fic (that will never leave the drafts) 🙏🏽
Ha ha, ha ha, no I’m not procrastinating what are you talking about?? Ughh I’m writing a fic and I’m SO worried everyone will hate it and me and everything I stand for if I post it. Writing is fun!
My WIP was made through a healthy combination of:
1. Having a dream that made a sense for the world it was in, but wouldn't work as a story plot
2. Quickly thrown together characters that I accidentally projected onto a little *too* hard
3. A crap ton of daydreaming and doodling
And 4. Already having an unhealthy obsession with the source material
8:33 is literally just Slay The Princess, minus the part about the character capable of hearing the narrator not being the main character
1:00 the solution? Screw it we b a l l
1:00 this is so accurate. Even for comments or texts.

"Man... this (canon event) could have been done so much better... I get why it wasn't, but the potential is there..."
"But I also don't want to just... write a fix fic, that would be boring, and people tend to frown on those."
"I guess... I could allude to a divergence from canon a lot earlier, that would result in a different path."
"... fuck it, I'm currently metaphorical balls deep into a hyper fixation on (other media/genre) let's mash the two together! That also gives me an excuse to be vague about the divergence point!"
7:27 That took me back to when I used to devour fanfics avidly
10:37 Well, lets see.
1- add one 200 songs long playlist full of folk, country and anything and feels like youre turning into a cawboy
2- Firearms with any type of weapon shoved right in
3- Nine chapters yet 100k words
Luckily my dad never asks to read my fics. Instead it’s my mother and grandmother. Also the 27 words thing is so true: I’ll either write 27 words or 14,000. Usually it’s somewhere in between, but the extremes always get me.
my best procrastination technique is to research something for hours for a sentence I DONT EVEN USE
"Listening to Music while writing helps me find the mood of my story"
Me, who listens to Symphonic Death Metal, Drone, and Breakbeat: This... this can only turn out good...
because of this video (i originally typed chapter im sobbing) i managed to figure out the last little main plot for one of the chapters.
now to... actually write things...
(I learned the lyrics so I could sing it in the shower lol)
also while I'm here, does anyone else sort of go into an almost trancelike state when they're writing super emotional scenes, or is that just me? like i'll just be sitting there staring at the google doc, almost completely unmoving except for my hands on the keyboard, 100% focused on the scene.
It's the way you posted this as I was procrastinating abt the last part of my fanfic (the middle bc i hate writing the bridges to the scenes i actually started the fic for) that I have yet to start writing
Hollywood files on the serial numbers all the time.
İ have thousands of none shots along with characters with no universes , maybe ill right a story about an apocalypse
my WIP is made out of spite that what I wanted to read one night seemingly didn't exist (im not the most experienced at finding fics so maybe it does, somewhere. i did find like 3 versions of what i wanted but they were all abandoned at the first or second chapter). and a hell of a lot of cheesy tropes. and a great backstory that im so jealous went to this cheesy trope fic that I'm already planning more meaningful fics in the same setting.
i love making characters out of media that has characters but not really (social deduction games, self-insert rpgs, etc)
1:58 Easy fix, just tag the fic as “canon-divergence/non-canon”
7:35 - gods I miss the days were the level of smut was declared by citrus fruit.😢

I was working on a warrior cats fanfiction when I was 11 and handed almost every chapter to my mom because I was just so proud of myself.
Don't delete your old work pls 🌸)
Maybe I would still let her read my fics, if I had any 🥲
(Perfectionism gets in the way too much)
I started a story with it being a fanfiction of Vinny Vinesauce's Tomodachi Life series, eventually realized that I liked the concept because I just liked the idea of a cast of characters that live in the same place despite the fact they don't even belong in the same genre together.
The fanfiction I've been lovesick for for the past year has just updated yet again today 🤧
1:20 me with any fancy word I find. Like aureate, dichatomic, mausoleum, lypothymy, grotesque.
I've been stuck on aureate for a while...
definitely
6:02 - Y’all ever read those “Diary of a Minecraft (X)” books? This is them
8:38 this is quite similar to Slay the Princess. Wouldn’t mind seeing more in that niche
"How do You write dialogue?"
I avoid it like the plague and when I Must write it I suffer and agonize over almost every line and sob in the night
8:33 This is basically just Slay the Princess.
What if I outsmart the system by playing this while I write my fanfic??
I think I'm going to accidentally procrastinate while trying to do this. I don't know anymore guys
To be fair disembowelment is very phonetic
If you ever want to feel like a alien pretending to be human. Write diologue and character interactions for a hour.
4:40
Y'see.
