From the streets of São Paulo to the most expensive player in the world, the teenage progidy became a global talking point overnight and rightly so. His unbelieveable natural talent had earned him not only the Real Betis transfer to break O Fenomeno's record, but the nickname 'The Next Garrincha'.
Overshadowed across the decades since his prime, Denílson is now a relatively unknown figure, despite being a key figure in Brazil's 1990s Golden Generation.

I understand that outside of Brazil , Denilson was kinda forgotten, but in Brazil he’s still part of our lives , even people who didn’t watch him as a player (like young kids) know and loves him, he’s an analyst on a Tv show , and he’s a pure entertainer, one of the funniest guys on Tv , I really love Denilson

Brazilians and Declining too young always seem to mix so often.
Probably the reason why Pele was so great. He never declined by anything but age.

Pele was a pioneer when it comes to a football player being a true elite athlete. At that time it was common for players to smoke, to be overweight, and Pele was an example of an athlete.

I remember this player, most people thought he would have been a left footed Garrincha. He was just so gifted, speed, dribbling skill, great first touch and he had a wonderful left foot.I seem to remember that he could also take freekicks. He had all the qualities to be one of the Brazilian greats but he lacked the ability to finish. He became an entertainer on the football field,he probably should have remained in Brazil for a few years, matured and then headed for Europe around the age of 24.It's really a pity that a player like Denilson,so technically gifted, never realized his full potential. In the end he was reduced to becoming an entertainer or a player the coach would bring on just to run the clock down.It really is a tragedy that this player did not achieve football greatness because his talent was never in doubt.

@@parisp2583 I didn’t see R9. Of course he had more hype. But Denilson came in with more hype than Kaka and Ronaldinho. He was a world record transfer coming out of Brazil which was known as a place to pick up players on the cheap. R9 only cost PSV 5 million a few years before. So Betis parting with more than 20 million for a guy out of the Brazilian league who was barely 20 was insanity. He was expected to be at R9’s level but he was bang average as opposed to Kaka and Ronaldinho who won balon dors.
