The show definitely interprets Tanya far more psychopathically than the light novels, ironically enough though she hasn't committed a single warcrime.
Even torching Arene was withing the standards of international warfare laws thanks to the rebels executing unarmed Imperial soldiers and claiming that there wasn't a single civilian in Arene. It's important to note that even today insurgents and revolutionaries aren't accorded the same protections that a uniformed soldier is.
Tanya is very much lawful neutral and a legal savant when it comes to exploiting those laws. Arene was a major logistical hub behind the Empire's line and it was imperative to take it quickly. It was full of armed dissidents that claimed there were no civilians in town and executed pows in front of the soldiers.
To show a real world example the US firebombed Tokyo destroying over 15 square miles of the city, killing an estimated 100,000 and leaving over a million homeless just to break moral and try to force a surrender, followed by the nuking of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. None of those towns were major logistical hubs behind US lines critical to maintaining the front, it was quite simply a terror campaign to win the war.
As a human being it's morally repugnant, as a soldier, and leader it's a tragic necessity to save lives of your own men.
Tanya isn't evil. She's lawful neutral and her actions highlight the flaws in international and national laws regarding war at the time. Remember it wasn't until after the Nuremberg trials where the international community decided following orders wasn't a legal reason to commit atrocities.
All Tanya wants is a job in central command running orders or making strategies, she just keeps failing her way upwards because she's the most competent mage commander the Empire has. It's also a lot more interesting than making a political/legal thriller where she's making different interpretations of the law and would bore everyone to tears.

This, Tanya as an orphan with magical talent (not exceptional, but enough to merit training as a mage), had two choices: Volunteer for the service, getting her on the officer track Or she will be drafted, willing or not, later on and be shoved into the grunt soldier track. So she volunteers and resolves to be a good soldier so she can get a relatively safe and comfortable role/position to serve out the war in the back lines... Of course that doesnt happen, instead she becomes a combat mage ace and put on the front lines, with Being X poking her or throwing her a curve ball anytime she gets anywhere close to sorting her life out a bit towards getting off of the bloody good times she's seemingly destinied for.
Honestly the vid above really missrepresents her at every step, is getting on her bad side a bad idea? Yes, absolutely... But she's perfectly willing to take prisoners if her orders and circumstances allow for it, obeys the international conventions and regulations to a T and is very much conserned for the wellfare of her subordinates (even if motivated in part due to wanting to be Seen as a competent officer who does right by those in her command rather than being some kind of altruist).
The two officers she stuck in the bunker? Her first choice was to send those dumbasses back to headquarters for additional training so they'd learn to follow orders or get drummed out of the officertrack... Because having officers that defy orders? That's how battles and lives are lost. They refuse and insist they be allowed to remain... so she sticks them in a bunker that... yeah, is an obvious and natural target for enemy artillery units... But like, if it wasnt those two in there? it'd be two other soldiers and they already burned their chances to be under Her direct command or get sent home, so death it is cause that's what happens in war.
Edit: Oh, and that scene in russia? The reason Tanya and crew are able to just fly around doing whatever they want in the enemy capital is cause the russians KILLED all of their mages... just went genocidal on anyone on their own side, civilian or military, that had magical talents... hence they had Zero combat mages of their own meaning Tanya and co had uncontested air superiority. That kind of bullshit is why Tanya was "blow them the eff up" cause what else do they deserve after murdering their own people for daring to have magic? Mary Sue joins that scene cause she and some other allied combat mages where nearby for a training camp but neither she nor anyone in that camp is a russian... cause all the russian mages are dead... cause the russians killed them... in wartime.

@@overlordsalem2706 Never banned. Not a warcrime. Though it was formally opposed by the Germans in WW1. If I recall correctly, they threatened to execute anyone using one. Their argument was that it was banned by the wording
"it is especially forbidden to employ arms, projections, or materials calculated to cause unnecessary suffering"
The American government responded by saying that if the Germans did that, they would execute anyone with a flamethrower or saw bladed bayonet. Neither side did anything because it was all blustering and few guns were used anyway in comparison to far worse weapons.

Tanya was given her powers by God like the literal God (She refuses to call him god and calls him Being X) and she curses him because she hates that he sent her there in the first place and removed her from her job and everything she had before in the real world. Through out the show God sends attack after attack at her to keep her on her toes and she keeps winning so God literally over powers Mary Sue in order to give her a rival and attempt to put her in her place because he was getting bored of her winning every fight.

The guy summarizing took some minor liberties, but yeah, this is largely how it went. I highly recommend the show.
In short, you have a psychopathic businessman i.e. short on empathy, heavy on logic. He really likes following rules and wants to climb the corporate ladder to retire in a comfortable life. He fires someone who he already gave a second chance. The guy pleads he has a family, he doesn’t care, the guy should have improved then.
The guy murders him by pushing him in front of a train. But before his death, a higher being stops time to have a philosophical conversation why so many people don’t have faith in a higher being. The businessman runs rings around him largely saying it’s because people are comfortable and not in peril, he’s a bad at management, plus he refuses to call him God because he thinks he’s incompetent and calls him Being X instead.
Being X says so if I put you in peril, you will have faith?, says he’s reincarnating him once and only once, and the businessman reincarnates as Tanya with memories intact in another world similar to ours just before World War I, in what would be our Germany, but where a very small percentage of people have magic and countries use it for military purposes.
Tanya tests high for magic at a young age, decides to volunteer before being conscripted to try to climb the military ladder to retire comfortably. But every now and again, because Tanya is not developing faith, Being X nudges things to put her in peril. And she of makes it her side mission to piss off Being X.
Very good show in my opinion, alternate WW1 with magic, staring a psycho who cares about following rules and protecting herself, with a low tolerance for stupid people (and stupid higher beings).

No rules would actually be wrong. That is the thing about her. She follows orders and rule to the letter, but is smart enough to use and interpred them to her own benefit. For example that part in exhibit B were she bombs the town, she came up with the loophole which allowed that. Because before that they issued an order for all civilians to flee the city and for the prisinors to be freed. After a time she argued that since all civilians must have left, afterall why would a innocent civilian stay in a warzone, so all that could be left would be resistance fighters and enemy soldiers and after filming that one soldier bing killed she now could do as she pleased, since she could proof that she was just protecting her own allies.

sekai means world and isekai just means another/different/other world. The story can be anything with any gender of protagonist as long as the main character is transported to another world. IIRC one of the oldest isekai stories I've watched is a shoujo (for girls) anime called fushigi yuugi in 1995. There are more earlier examples but just giving my own experience.
old isekai's I can think of are El Hazard, Rayearth, Zero no Tsukaima, Digimon, Now and then, here and there, Inuyasha (technically not since it's still the same world just a different time).

Inuyasha still takes place in a different world than ours because of the presence and general acceptance of physically distinct "demons" and other Ayakashi, but Kagome is from the future of that Isekai, so she is only travelling through time to the Sengoku Era. It's a rare example of a purely time travelling isekai but with a twist.
"Sengoku Komachi Kurou Tan" is an example of a purely time travelling type isekai that takes place in OUR world (no magic or demons)

Being X had the understanding that the only way and best way for Tanya to ever 'accept' Being X as God is to put her in a 'dire situation', because Tanya before she was reincarnated, said as much, so she basically dug her own grave. Twice.
The problem is her refusal to accept God's existence despite the clear contradiction of her knowing they exist and still denying it. Realistically and in terms of anime logic, even in this world, she will never win against God because God is the one who gave her powers. Although she won't win against God, God may not be able to win her over either. The best result is a stalemate and truce because the harder she fights against God, the closer to death she'll get. On the other hand, the harder God tries to win her over, the more likely she'll be to overcome the challenges, so its a really pointless fight between an atheist and "deity".

The guns they are firing are relatively normal and so is the ammunition, what isn't normal is that they are using them as a delivery mechanism for magic. Also, Tanya has access to special equipment - for reasons I won't get into here - that allows her to use way more power than most others, so you will occasionally see her do some really crazy stuff.

There’s actually a reason Mary was able to overpower Tanya for most of their second fight. It’s the same reason Tanya is so formidable despite her size. And that’s their computation jewels. The gems they wear around their necks. They allow them to channel and control magic. Tanya had an experimental jewel that only she could use, superior to all others because God helped a scientist make it, cursing it so that she can only use it if she prays to God. Because Tanya is an atheist(she doesn’t believe the being claiming to be God is actually God, so she calls him Being X), and the entire reason he reincarnated her is to *force* her to believe he is really God. Mary had an even more superior computation jewel that God helped make. You see, Mary and her father are both people that God has sent as obstacles to kill Tanya. The deal is, if Tanya manages to survive long enough to die a natural death without becoming a Christian, she can continue to reincarnate like everyone else(but without her memories) but if she doesn’t, the reincarnation cycle ends for her. So those obstacles(Mary and her father) are meant to kill Tanya. In other words. God is stacking the deck against her. That’s why he reincarnated her as a girl during wartime(to increase her chances of dying) and he also gave her a high aptitude for magic to ensure she would be drafted into the military. Tanya decided to enlist anyway, earlier than she would’ve been drafted, because her plan was to rise through the ranks as quickly as possible to get a nice cushy desk job(but it keeps backfiring because her constant promotions make her essential on the battlefield). So the entire show is basically Tanya vs God.

    • @Folker46590
      @Folker46590 Год назад +1

Not really, Mary is all powerful because she has THREE blessings from the Gods (as explained in the LN). Her compjewel is nothing special, she is pretty much overloading and bypassing it, she is a pure powerhouse of magic but has trouble controlling it. The impression given later is that she dies after the war is over because she burned her body out channeling so much magic through it trying to kill Tanya. Like her dad, she is mentally unstable.
The LN seems to be confused about Tanya's magic ability; on the one hand it says she has a huge "mana" reserve, but Victoria says there are plenty of mages with more magic than Tanya has. But it is her cursed Jewel and her emotion maturity, that makes her so powerful. Tanya is also psychotic; in that she feels almost no empathy for others and sees them as nothing but tools for her advancement. She knows this so she does NOT trust herself to make moral decisions, she puts her faith is the rules, allowing them to make her decisions for her.

Dave, did you post this video at like 4:00 am or something?
Bro, it's 8:30am more or less here and RUclips's saying you posted this only *four hours* ago!
    *Oh well... fire reaction.* 👍
Still, you could've just posted this by morning! No need to sacrifice your sleep.
And yes, I know time-zones are a thing, but I'm from Brazil. Pretty sure there's not that much difference between both of our time-zones if you live in the US. So take care, mate.
By the way, isekai is just when you go to another world. That's it.
Yes, there _is_ a very big prevalence of isekai protagonists all originally being male, but that's not always the case. Azusa Aizawa and the girl from "Ascendance of a Bookworm" are two examplea of isekai protagonists that were women (or even just girls) in their prievious life.
Personally, I wanna find more isekais with female protagonists. Aside from a few great exceptions, most isekais with male protagonists just feel "more of the same", if you catch my drift.

No sleep is sacrificed. I do all my recording at night for the next day. I just choose to release some of them now as opposed to my regular schedule because I want to be one of the first to have an upload. Does well for the algorithm as you can see 😁

Ironically, Isekia used to be considered a girls genre: they nearly always had female protagonists and were largely romance/historical based; then you got a few anime that crossed those over with shonen tropes, Inuyasha probably being the most famous; then you got some fanservice heavy harem romance isekai LN and anime, like, "guy falls through his mirror and ends up on a female only planet"; then some shonen combat isekai; then sword art's profitability inspired lots of power fantasy imitators and the existing Korean/Chinese LN isekais lead a shift towards reincarnation isekias.

more often than not, yeah its a male if we are talking about the MC, they will throw women too but they will be supporting characters. i dont remember a female MC being thrown into Isekai. Unless they literally reincarnate the male into female body. but that doesnt really count i think lol.
Oh wait as im typing typing this i remember there was 1 that released a few years ago where the MC was female lol. The Saint's Magic Ability is Omnipotent (聖女の魔力は万能です, Seijo no Maryoku wa Bannou

Reincarnation in another world counts as isekai. "Isekai" literally means another world. Technically Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid could be considered an isekai as the dragons came from another world into the regular world.
