I have a love-hate relationship with spaghnum moss. It works great at propagation and air layering. But when it dries out, it becomes hydrophobic. Transitioning from one media to another can be quite the shock. We often get too excited to move our plants into a pretty pot or out of the propbox. Best thing is to take it slow, keep similar growing conditions to avoid plant shock. Also, if something is working, change isn't always necessary. Thanks for sharing plant struggles and failures. We usually only see 100% perfection on these sorts of videos.
I hope you’re not beating yourself up anymore about these plants 🥺 I totally get your frustration and grief though! I had to start all over AGAIN for the 3rd time with my alocasia frydek :/ I love that plant so much but for some reason I can never get it to fully thrive. Sending good vibes to all your plants and that they bounce back tenfold! 💚
*Me literally putting 2 baby Alocasias in pots that are probably too big while you’re talking about that very thing* 😂😂😂 I think we’re all with you here! I mess with my plants way too much!
Caved today and got my wish list micans👊 then snapped a two leaf peace lily domino I have been killing/rehabbing for a year. I also feel like shit. From giddiness to why do I even do anything. I just found your channel and am enjoying your company. Thanks
For phal orchid, since it doesn't have roots, I'd bury the main stem in a mix of size-small orchid bark and size-large perlite. A bit of horticultural charcoal will help prevent root rot. Use an orchid pot with extra drain slit of the side for air flow. At the initial stage of the orchid growing roots, err on the dry side. Water by soaking the entire pot, but then drain 90% of water. The orchid will need very bright indirect light and some humidity to regrow roots. After the roots are established, you can let them sit on a shallow puddle of water at the bottom of a cache pot, as they don't like to completely dry out either. When you can find the right balance between air flow and moisture in the root zone, they will re-bloom. Last but not least, don't let the core stem (the part where roots and leaves sprout) sit in water.
My most recent eff-up is to take my mican on a moss pole out of the mini greenhouse and let it dry out completely 🙃. So it drops half of the bottom leaves. This one is a FWP cutting and has never been growing well for me. So many time I consider tossing it away and buy a new full pot instead. Anyways, it's back to the mini greenhouse now. I also made a mistake of "repotting" alocasia and "harvesting" corms. 😂 Three of them died completely back and took 2 months to put out a new leaf. I learned my mistake and not touching my new azlanii still in its original growing media. I only treat it for spider mites, and that's it.
Literally same. Luckily, I found a mican for $5 at local nursery to fill in the sad spots. It now looks better than before. Sometimes mistakes are okay.
I feel you with the Alocasia- I tend to have lots of success with growing corms or saving a dying Alocasia but I can’t seem to get them to put out multiple leaves and get big. I don’t get it .
I transplanted the entire root ball, moss and all, into soil. It has worked for all my root props in moss: callisia, philodendron, string of hearts, alocasia, hoya, etc. Just make sure your soil has extra perlite, orchid bark, worm casting, and less peat. If in doubt, use an orchid pot with slits on the wall to help drain out the excess moisture. All of my transplants extend their roots past the moss layer into soil and establish fine with no adverse effect.
I absolutely identify with the desire to ‘fiddle’ with plants…. I do it all the time and there have been plenty of times where my plants need to be left alone. Also I have learned a lot through the fiddling and it’s how I’ve become more confident… in spite of my mistakes. 🤦🏻♀️ I’m a little nervous about the winter because I need to find a way to keep myself busy so I don’t mess with them. I really appreciate you sharing ! I needed to hear that other people have similar experience and how they navigated it! I’m plant fiddling as we speak (OMFG that sounds awful)…It’s therapeutic and that’s definitely a HUGE draw . 💚💚🪴🪴🪴
Yea it’s definetly something I’ve been struggling with too. Recently I’ve gotten into other hobbies which has helped like painting or gaming. I think also finding other cozy things to do like just relaxing and watching a movie has definitely kind of helped me seperate from that want to mess with my plants

Thank you ♥️, I definitely feel better now most of them are picking up and it’ll be fun to experience them bounce back! Appreciate you 🥹

It’s good to know other people deal with it as well!
I love your Jose Buono - it still looks beautiful. 💚
I recently did some reports that…. I am regretting right now. 🤦🏻♀️
Thank you! Ik the feeling it took me so long to acknowledge that I fked up these plants 🤦🏽♀️

Aww that’s sounds like a whirlwind hope the peace lily bounces back! Thank you much appreciated ♥️
Thx for sharing and you are defenitlly not alone. I have killed so many plants. It's normal, happends everyone 🥰
Thank you much appreciated

I forgot. Fertilize weekly, weakly. I wish you good luck 👍
Thank you so much for this! I’ll definitely try this and might even put Saran Wrap for a while for extra humidity.

Omg yes I think with micans I constantly consider buying a full pot it’s just so irresistible. Yeah Alocasias are very 50/50 for me and frustrating!

Yess honestly I think I’m just gonna leave it the heck alone and see what that does lol
Almost killed my Syngonium chiapense taking it out of moss into soil. Dreading taking my Philodendron verrucosum out of moss. I’m sure I will kill it.
I’ve definitely learned to hate moss after all this lol
Me too
