If you're familiar with classic studio gear you'll have heard of or perhaps even used the Fairchild 660 studio compressor. They fetch sizeable prices on today's used market if you can actually find one. From Rockett's site: "The original Six Sixty Compressor was designed by Rein Narma, who had worked with Les Paul to build a recording mixer to use with Les Paul's Ampex 8-track. Les Paul asked Narma if he would build a compressor/limiter. Sherman Fairchild, who was friends with Les Paul, learned of the compressor and licensed Narma's compressor design, hiring Narma to be chief engineer at Fairchild Recording Equipment Corporation. The first 10 Fairchild 660’s were built by Narma himself. The first unit was sold to Rudy Van Gelder who used it to cut lacquer masters for Blue Note Recordsand Vox Records. The second unit went to Olmsted Sound Studios in New York City and the third 660 built went to Mary Ford and Les Paul."
The Airchild Six Sixty is J.Rockett's homage to the Fairchild masterpiece. It features four fundamental controls that let the user run it as a 2:1 compressor right up to a 30:1 limiter. It injects a warmth and richness to your tone reminiscent of the original and can be used as a boost right through to a brickwall compressor - without the divisive 'bloom'. I'll say on the record that the Airchild Six Sixty is easily one of the top five compressors I've had the pleasure to demo, but that's not surprising coming from this company.
This video is a no-chat affair that runs through some different settings in a jam context with a very clean Vibrolux sim and a backing track courtesy of Elevated Jam Tracks. An alternative, chatty demo can be viewed at (TBA).

This to me would be a perfect ‘always on pedal’. The only reason for the existence of the bypass switch is to compare the on status to the off status. 😊

Even with the compressor blended in full it doesn't sound overly squished. Just sounds more high fi and rich and even, with some sustain to boot. Makes me think maybe Gilmour used it in the studio for his clean guitar sounds, because that's what this sound reminded me of.(I have no idea) Very nice job, J Rockett a Burgs!

Yea, I was wondering how much squish it has, not that I would ever play with a ton anyway,. I have been in a compression phase for a while, this one seems pretty nice as a tone sweeter/sustainer and he really pops out of the mix when its on.

@@masterofreality230 It's the nature of the compressor they're emulating, the Fairchild. That wasn't an "extreme" compressor that people used to get squishy sounds. More of a leveling compressor to get dynamic program tamed. It's a gorgeous thing, but different. I love compression of all types! Extreme and subtle. This is a really nice pedal to make the guitar pop out in a mix, just like you said. .

@@musicmann1967Yea, it does remind me a bit of Gilmore. I got the Source Audio Atlas for now, I could not make up my mind. If you arent familiar its got about 6 different comps, a noise gate and 2 eqs you can run before and after compression. It is digital though. I will probably figure out what I prefer with it then get something analog later.

Hello Brett, How about The Airchild with a Distortion pedal - Compressors are noisy with Distortion pedals - I’m wondering if this Compressor will deliver the same (noisy) result. I always enjoy your videos - Cheers

Compressor demos that aren’t level matched are really unhelpful
