    1:56 and 2:52 #28 blocking for Detroit here is former Eagles great RB Wilbert Montgomery, playing out his final season as a Lion after being traded for LB Garry Cobb following a holdout.
    3:45 Turk Schonert was a textbook "streaky" QB: if you look at his gamelogs on PFR, he seemed to have an equal number of great games where his passer rating was 100+, and others where he threw INTs in bunches. This week was one of his good ones. www.pro-football-reference.co...
    9:30 Richard Todd came in with the Saints behind 33-3. Interestingly, after this 3 TD performance in relief, he'd only see action in one more game the rest of the year (4-6, 29 yds, 0 TDs, 2 INTs vs Rams in week 9) and retired after the season ended. www.pro-football-reference.co...

    Hard to believe that tampa actually had a 28 to 17 lead on the Bears in Chicago before falling 38 to 28. Other than that Monday night in Miami its hard to believe that Bears Defense would allow the lowly bucs to score 28 points. Cause come playoff time nobody could move the ball on the Bears in 85

    The 85 Raiders were the only team that could have beaten the 85 Bears in the Super Bowl. Miami wasn’t going to beat the Bears twice in 85. The Raiders, however, had a great Defense and they would have shut down the Bears offense down. Super Bowl XX would have been a low scoring Defenses war with many players on both offenses being carted off the field in body bags. On offense is where the Raiders had a big advantage over the Bears. Marcus Allen could break a long run at any time and he would have caused the Bears problem out of the backfield catching screens and quick swing passes.Todd Christensen was the best TE and 3rd down receiver in the NFL. Cliff Branch and Dokie Williams were both world class sprinters who could score on any play and with the Bears blitzing as much as they did, the Raiders would have max protected with 8 blockers and threw 20 bombs that day & if Branch or Williams were to catch just 3 out of 20 then that would be 21 points right there. I figure they probably would have drawn a few Defensive holding calls and a couple Pass Interference calls on top of that. The Bears had Willie Gualt who could get Deep against most CBs but he would have to beat Mike Haynes and Lester Hayes to do so. Walter Payton would have had his work cut out for him. Jim McMahon and Marc Wilson most likely become 1st quarter body bag casualties. Steve Fuller finishes the game out for the Bears and Jim Plunkett comes off the bench again to win his 3rd Super Bowl ring in the 80’s.

      Anything's possible, and Allen was fantastic that year (1,759 yards rushing, 11 TDs)...but Plunkett was 38 and had lost the starting job to Marc Wilson, who had a pretty bad '85 season (16 TDs, 21 INTs). Branch was a deserving HOF inductee, but he was 37 and caught no passes in '85, his final season. Teams did try max protect against the '85 Bears, it rarely worked well - teams just hadn't figured out the 46 yet, and the '85 Bears defense was right up there with the '76 Steelers, '91 Eagles, and '00 Ravens in terms of having great players at nearly every position.
      The Bears and Raiders had met in '84, with the Bears winning 17-6 (see ruclips.net/video/z12ZhnfQG-E/видео.html ); Raiders committed 5 turnovers, Bears had 9 sacks (4.5 by Dent). I think we can watch that highlight film for our best real-world estimate of how things would have gone in '85 had they met in the Super Bowl...which didn't happen, b/c the Patriots were the better team that year and had beaten them in the divisional playoffs 27-20, then routed the Dolphins 31-14.

      @@TomG1555 I was an assistant coach in the NFL for the Vikings, Rams, and Raiders. The 46 Defense was built for 2 Back sets with at least one TE in the game. When the Bears Blitzed the also green dogged the LBs, and SS who were responsible for man to man coverage on the RBs and TE. If the RBs or TE stayed in protection to help block then the Defender responsible for them in coverage would automatically green dog blitz the QB. This concept allowed the Bears to always have one more pass rusher than the offense could block. For example. If an Offense kept 7 guys in to pass protect the Bears ended up rushing 8 with one of the 8 having a free run at the QB. I worked with Rob Ryan and I am very familiar with the 46 Defense. I always told Rob that his dad his dad is 100% responsible for accidentally creating the wide open, high scoring 1 back spread offenses that we see today along with rapid extinction of the FB position. Because the Raiders had the opportunity to play the Bears in 84, they had a plan in place that would have exposed the 46 Defense in SB XX. Earlier that season the Dolphins slightly exposed the Bears by playing most of the game in 20 per where they took their TE out of the game and replaced him with a 3rd WR. This created a major coverage issue for the Bears because they had to put either their SS Doug Plank or their FS Gary Fencik in man to man coverage on which ever WR that Miami aligned in the slot. That night Mark Clayton, Mark Duper, and Nat Moore were fighting in the huddle over who was going to be the slot receiver on every pass play. They all took their turns abusing the slow athletic white guy who was responsible for covering them. Miami had a good plan and Buddy Ryan got caught with his pants down and his 46 Defense was embarrassed that night. However, as good as the Dolphins game plan was on that night, it was not the long term solution for defeating the 46 Defensive. Had the Dolphins played the Bears in SB XX it would have been a completely different story. Why? Because the Dolphins were using their 3 wide receiver sets while still keeping 2 RBs in the game (or what we defensive coaches call 20 Per (2 RBs 0 TEs). Like I said before, the 46 Defense was built to destroy all 2 Back formations and Buddy Ryan would have had the mis match problem solved. If the Dolphins were to have 21 personnel in the game (2 Backs TE) then Doug Plank stayed on the field. If the Dolphins substituted to 20 per by taking their TE off the field and replacing him with Nat Moore or any other true WR then Doug Plank left the field and was replaced by the 3rd CB. The Dolphins would have lost their mis match advantage and Marino would not have been able to unload the ball quickly to a wide open slot receiver before getting hit or sacked by an unblocked free rushing LB like he was able to do the first time around. Again, like I said before, the Raiders had the ultimate solution for the 46 Defense and that is why I believe that they would have beaten the Bears in SB XX. The Raiders were planning on spreading the Bears out by aligning in 1 back formation. Cliff Branch was inactive for most of the 85 season after being injured during the preseason. However, he was never put in IR because Al Davis saw the future knowing that they would most likely be playing the Bears in SB XX and a healthy Cliff Branch with fresh legs would be needed. The Raiders activated Branch in the playoffs with the intention of getting him ready to play a huge role in the SB. The Raiders plan for the Bears 46 Def was to use a lot of 1 back 3 wide receiver formations (or 11 per: 1 RB 1 TE) in order to create mis matches and force the Bears into having to take one of their All Pro LBs off the field and replacing him with a Nickel DB. If the Bears defense didn’t match the Raiders offensive per by substituting a Nickel DB for Singletary then the Raiders knew that Bears were bringing a Blitz and the Raiders had 6 or 7 one word audible checks or nuggets that were designed to score TDs. A couple plays were screens to Marcus. They had one where Marcus was going to Fake Block and then when the LB green dogged Blitzed Marcus was going to release on a swing pass where he would be uncovered and on a different one he was going to fake pass block and then release down the middle uncovered. The Raiders also planned to use a lot of 21 per (2 RB 1 TE) which was by far the most common offensive per group used by every single offense in the NFL. The Raiders wanted be in 21 per in order to make sure that the Bears kept all 3 of their LBs on the field along with Doug Plank at SS and Gary Fencik at FS. With 21 personnel on the field, Frank Hawkins was going to move from FB to HB and Marcus was going to shift or motion from the Backfield out to WR position creating a 1 Back 1 TE (11 per formation look with 21 per people in the game. This would create a huge matchup problem and for the 2nd time that season, Buddy Ryan would have been caught with his pants down on National TV for the entire world to see. Marcus Allen was guaranteed to be covered by a slower white player with with average athletic ability. But it gets even worse for the Bears … It guarantees that a LB has to cover Todd Christensen instead of the SS who has to cover Marcus Allen. The Raiders were underdogs in SB XVIII to Washington but dominated the the game 38-9 and nobody saw it coming. I think the same thing could have happened to the Bears in SB XX vs the Raiders. But it wasn’t to be as the Raiders got caught looking ahead and fumbled away a playoff game to NE.

      @@randyhanson4973 In the interests of brevity, I'll just point out that (1) one difference-maker in the Miami game was Marino's quick release to beat the Bears' blitz, something neither Wilson nor Plunkett had - I reference the '84 game between the two teams re: Wilson's performance against the Bears' 46, where he struggled (7-19, 0 TDs, 2 INTs) and (2) the 46 wasn't an entirely new concept in '85 - Buddy had been running variations of it for a while even by '84 - so the Super-Bowl-champion Raiders knew what was coming, had every opportunity to utilize the game plan you recommend in that '84 game, and actually *did* try a lot of what you suggest...with little success, mainly b/c the Raiders OL was completely dominated by the Bears DL - again, 9 sacks, and Allen only had 2.8 YPC on 15 carries - which wrecked any maneuverings the Raiders attempted or may have had planned. In the end, while what-ifs are fun to talk about and you've obviously put some thought into yours, actual head-to-head game play always weighs more heavily than any hypotheticals, and the '84 game is what we have to judge by.

    • @TomG1555
      @TomG1555  Год назад

      @@randyhanson4973 also: Todd Bell took over at SS for the Bears back in '82, with Fencik moving over to FS - Bell subsequently made the Pro Bowl in '84, then held out in '85...and was replaced by Dave Duerson, who was a Pro Bowler from '85-'88. They were both significant upgrades over Plank in speed and coverage ability, and among the best safeties in the league in the mid-'80s (though Bell's holdout for all of '85 both derailed his career & ensured he'd miss the Super Bowl win). So, having a plan designed to keep both of the Bears' safeties on the field probably wouldn't have worked nearly as well as one expecting to exploit Plank's limited athleticism.

    • @randyhanson4973
      @randyhanson4973 Год назад

      @@TomG1555 Correct regarding Todd Bell. Did you know that the 46 Defense was named after Doug Plank who wore #46. As the story goes, Plank wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed. As a result, he often mis aligned and blew his run fit and pass coverage responsibilities. In the 46 Defensive the SS aligned down inside the box at LB depth in WLB position to the opposite of the TE. Generally when the SS aligns down in the box it’s almost always to the side of the TE. Originally the Defense had a different name and whenever Buddy Ryan Defensive Call was that name, Doug Plank couldn’t remember where to line up. It finally got to the point where Buddy scrapped the original name call and changed it to 46 with the hope of triggering a response in Plank’s brain to where it would remind him of where to line up correctly. It worked immediately at a 100% success rate. Buddy Ryan, along with a very high % of Football coaches in general, are better teachers than 90% of the current college university professors with tenure.

      Per Wikipedia, he went into politics after his playing career is over. He actually played 9 years for KC, which is a pretty good career for a guy who was originally a 12 round pick (by MIA); unfortunately the Chiefs only made the playoffs one year out of those, so those aren't particularly well-remembered teams. He fought off '83 1st round pick Todd Blackledge to keep the starting job throughout, which is fairly impressive since teams usually don't draft guys that high without intentions for them to take over at some point.
