Hi, I've missed your videos! I was wondering, can you please make a video on how to train to pick an ace card out of other options, shake their head no, and nod yes? I noticed that you had videos that showed your birds doing that, but not a tutorial. Thanks, and I always enjoy your videos!!!
Wow I've missed you! I love your videos. I love how patiently you work with your birds. You're awesome. I've learned so much from you. Thank you for sharing! If it's possible I would love to see more videos more often. Thanks again💙💜❤
A tip: wet the birds nail and then file it and it will be so easier! I know I am sooooo late but can I use a nail file instead on a clipper, bc I am scared to use a clipper! And go slowlyy and file their footsie while giving treats?
Could you do a video on how to bird proof a room or your favourite toys? I'm currently setting up a new cage for my new bird and I only see what NOT to buy. It's hard to find toys that match every standard. Love your videos! Please do more
CeramicKangaroo Get a variety of toys like Grace said. I had bought a variety of toys for my birds and noticed that they like the shreddable ones. So that's what I get them now. Some like the plastic, some wood or some like all varieties so it depends on what your bird likes. And also be very careful what you put in the cage. Some things there feet, beak or nails can get caught on or can strangle themselves. I check their toys in the cage every other day to make sure they're aren't broken pieces or loose. If they are I take them out. If you need more help I don't know if you know there's bird groups on facebook and are very helpful. You can post pics of your bird or birds and ask questions if you need help.. I hope everything works out. And yes this young lady's videos are awesome! She's very good & patient
Thank you so much for making these videos!! I am adopting a Parrotlet in a couple weeks, and I am so happy to have this amazing resource. I feel so much more educated on how to care for him properly. Your birds are so beautiful, and I can tell they have such an amazing home with you! Thank you for everything you do to get this great information out to the rest of us!
Wow! You've got a lot more patience than me. I just keep Coco on his back and file one of his claws before he starts to protest. Great use of positive reinforcement, as usually in your videos!
For trimming claws, I don’t use any treats. I just hug and kiss him after the procedure. I can do that because we have a strong bond and trust each other. For flying on command I use bits of pellets and small seeds like hemp, sunflower hearts, lentils, etc. Also bits of apple. I try to vary the reward.
Hes just too cute. I am binchwatching your videos so I can be the best caregiver to a baby when I finally get one. Learning SO much from you! Thank you!
Even as a human I'm terrified of nail clippers, it must be way worse with birds... You did a great job, bless you. 🙏 What I'm wondering is how it works in the nature. Will their nails just use themselves up because the birds are much more active in the wild?
I trimmed my birds nail and nicked the quick in order to collect DNA. If you’re doing this you want to just nick the quick. In the case that your bird does bleed, purposely or accidentally, have some flour on hand. Birds blood clots very slowly so always have some flour on hand. Cornstarch works as well, some ppl have used soap.
Nice to hear from you again :) i love your videos soo much and accually managed to teach my bird a few tricks from your tutorials. So thanks for that i love you :)
Wow, what a very detailed video thanks. I am a first time new bird owner. I have a cockatiel with pink feet/nails and I would have used human nail clippers. I had no idea that it could cause micro fractures. Until now I take him to someone who groomes birds with the towel method.
My previous bird didnt need nail clipping. My current bird does and really needed a good advice on it. What a crappy advice has been around... especially the towel, letting the bird lay on his back. Hell no. I tried it my bird doesnt like it. I had the feeling it was going to ruin my bond. So grateful for this video. I will train for this now! Thanks :3
This tutorial is brilliant, my conures nail do keep the toes raised slightly, but the last time I had them clipped it took him weeks before he could grip again! He would fly to my shoulder and fall off, or try to land on the curtains and fall off!
what do you do if your bird's quick is all the way to the tip of their nail?? i tried trimming my birds nail, just the very tip, and he ended up bleeding and i felt awful cause i hurt him.
Great video, trimming our green cheek's nails has always been a horrible experience for all. Today I ordered a clicker and a good small animal nail clipper. Like and sub for you today. Thanks for sharing!
So I have taken my bird to 3 different avian vets in the city and all of them have cut into the quick and made each of his nails bleed. They relied on stypic powder to stop the bleeding and it really upset me to see them do this. His nails were far too short. I resorted to using a dremel on him myself (my husband just holds him in his hands and he doesn't bite us), but it is still very stressful for him and it would be nice to get him to be more willing to let me do it without having to hold him, or even use a nail file. Not all vets are knowledgeable as it turns out. Ours are still feeding their parrots seed and not giving them any enrichment :(.
Hey I've had this lovebird for like 2 months and she's still a baby but her beek seems to be chipped and I've looked out on the internet and it seems that it's because she lacks of calcium... Problem is she's afraid of EVERYTHING by everything I mean EVERYTHING especially white things such as her calcium rock... Any advices on how to get her to get the calcium she needs + how to help her not to be afraid of everything :c thnx!
Hello, is there a way how to grab a bird without stressing him too much ? When you want to take it out of cage (at vet, nail trimming, etc.) My lovebird is scared as hell whenever I try to grab him. It would be very helpful. He's not scared of hand or interaction, he just hates when I try to grab him and take him out of cage. Thanks.
Heyyy! So I have a question.. A while ago (like a year or two) I was on a plane coming from Houston TX (I think, I might have been going) and I saw a girl that looked very much like you, I got way too shy to go up to you if it was even you, was it? (Sorry I have the memory of a goldfish)
Hello. I got myself 2 lovebirds. But they are very affraid of me. I try to take them out of the cage by catching them in the cage. When i am sitting next to the cage they are very happy and make lots of sound. How do i get them to come on there own out of the cage? Do i still catch them by hand out of the cage? Thanks
michaela2b don’t catch them with your hands, that will make them loose trust in you, open there cage door and let them come out on there own terms. Keep em in a area where there will generally be people so they get used to the sound and people. Btw how are they it’s been 2 years?
My birds quick has grown out very far, his nails aren't over grown but if you cut them they bleed and I'm talking the tiniest bit. We have to file them to keep them from getting sharp
Can you do a video on how to pick a good UVB light for a bird, how long a day to leave it on, where to put it in relation to the bird/cage ect. ? I enjoy your videos!
Is using nail files a safe alternative to this? I'm a relatively new bird owner and want to start cutting my own conure's nails (my bird store decided to clip his wings recently despite me telling them not to) but I'm not comfortable with the idea that I could hurt him while doing so.
Nail files are totally fine, I would aim for one that’s a finer grain so it’s less likely to cause damage to the nail. I just start training trimming with clippers because it’s less steps, one quick snip vs having to adjust to long hold time, vibrations, and lots of movement.
lol, I am wearing my "no one knows I'm trans" shirt while watching this XD Also this is a great video! I've been using a lot of tips from this channel and they're all great! I bought a feather bright light bulb for my budgie after seeing them recommended in one of these videos and the before and after on his beak is incredible! His beak used to look so dried out but now it's smooth and shiny and he even seems to have an extra boost in energy for an already very energetic little bird.
I have a cockateil named cookie her nails are really sharp i really wanna do this but shes a baby shes 1-2months old and i really dont wanna hurt her, can someone give me tips?
a quick question for you: I am gonna buy some budgies but I have heard you can't train budgies if you buy more than one at a time ... I wanted to buy two budgies and I also want to teach them to do tricks ( like yours ) so do you have any suggestions on this +++ can you do a vid on how to buy a bird 🐦, how to pick a good bird ( healthy) ... thx
Spirit Wolf I thought of it but a video on RUclips discouraged me to potty train them .... It said " if you use a command to potty train them then they won't go potty till you give them the command which may result in them holding it in for too long causing injury to their tiny intestines " .... So what I basically want is them to know where to go potty and where not to go for example like they are allowed to go in their cage and not on the sofa .... Thx BTW Edit : this is the video ruclips.net/video/wPoWy_kw488/видео.html
Was about to trim my gcc nails, but I better have ver do it once or twice first. I'm really afraid of hurting her. Thank you for the advice. P.S. I KNOW
Samira Schramm sand paper perches can cause little cuts on their feet, try and get some toys or perches that are a textured wood or material that they dig at or chew and like to sit and walk around on it, I don’t know what else though, I’m sorry :(
I got too excited when I saw "Flock Talk" on my notifications!!! 🐦💕

Kizerrain I don’t think soap is a good option, I just worry about it getting into the blood stream or causing irritation
I’ve heard people use cayenne powder? But it’s spicy, so it would hurt right?

Critical oversight. You MUST have corn starch or kwik-stop readily at hand to apply with wet Qtips if bleeding does occur.

Samira Schramm sand paper perches can cause little cuts on their feet, try and get some toys or perches that are a textured wood or material that they dig at or chew and like to sit and walk around on it, I don’t know what else though, I’m sorry :(
Hey, I looked into it a bit more and I think you could use a grapevine perch :)
How often do we cut them
Once a week should be good to keep them in shape, or you can trim them whenever the toe starts to lift off of a flat surface. It's up to you
What treats do you use for bird training?
