Hi I’m Rick Shiels, welcome to my channel! This RUclips channel is designed to help you play better golf, also to help you enjoy your golf more!
I specialise in golf equipment reviews, golf instruction & I play against some of the best golfers in the world!
I also want to make you play better golf by providing coaching video on all topics about golf, how to fix your slice, fix your hook, help you drive the golf ball longer, hit your irons more pure, hit your irons closer to the hole and help you draw and fade your golf shots.
I will also help you lower your score by chipping better by stopping you duff and thin chips, pitch the ball closer and also create backspin. Also I will provide you help to putt better and hole more putts!
Rick, your on-course talk is really positive here despite everything, less disaster chat and staying practical. Good vibes.
Rick, to start with, i think you're great and i love the channel. However....
That 3rd hole was such a good example of your game management. Whenever you get into a little bit of trouble (often off the tee), you chase a par or better when it is actually the correct play to accept a single dropped shot on that hole then move on... As soon as you were in the trees off the tee i knew that hole was going to end up being a big score. The right play there was always a little 20-25 yard dinky shot out sideways, away from any of the interferance.
You say these big scores come "out of nowhere" but if that is the case, how could i have possibly predicted a double or worse, from your position off the tee when i saw your lie and position. I knew you'd take the riskier shot on.
Edited.. Same for the 4th hole.
Worst still, that big score on one hole affects your mood and confidence. And you are a confidence player, i see it in your matchplay games. When you're hot, you're hot. These lapses of game management, i believe, end up costing you even more shots on the round, eventually...
Again, said with love and respect.. Cheers.
He needs to adopt the way of the playa.
It's quite complicated comment, but I just saw 3rd hole and it's true he hit the tree, but he didn't actually end in a terrible position. He was on a wrong fairway, but he could easily play from there and he would probably end in a similar position playing safe...
But you were right with 4th hole - the attempt through trees was completely unnecessary.
The 4th hole was even more frustarting to watch for me. After getting a double he tries to blast one through a tree instead of chipping out? Could have easily hit a wedge and have a chance for par. So strange lol
It’s such a painful pattern to watch.
Rick starts the back 9 by saying that he MUST shoot under par, and then tries to drive the green on a par 4 where the green is surrounded by a hazard.
RUclipsrs go for hero shots in videos. Off of the course they may think about decade or some other course management concepts but that would be "boring" golf. This is why my favorite type of video is when RUclips golfers play in actual stroke play tournaments. I guess I like boring golf.
What a difference a positive mental attitude makes. Even when playing less than your best, you’re attitude made it a great vid to watch.
Watch some of the previous ones. Guy is practically on suicide watch
@@xbe1971 oh I know!
I love the fact that he shows us the good and the bad, you know so many content creators would just not show the really bad games. It showes he is human like the rest of us and golf is hard. Thanks rick🎉
True some content creators just redo their shots lol
I’m sitting here judging while also knowing you are better at golf than I will ever be.
Do enjoy watching you Rick
Love how he was concerned about the tees not being far enough back at the start.
This video needs to be saved in the archives so future generations can know the horrors of not taking course management seriously.
Par 5, 220 yard 2nd shot, into the wind, impossible pin position, let's go for it. Oops, flubbed into bunker. "What happened!?"
35:38 “now’s the time to hit a good golf shot!” Tops it into a bunker 😂😂 this actually killed me because it’s so relatable. Smile through the pain Rick
time to go back to the fat grips
I recently changed my grips to a fat grip. My lord what a positive difference.
@@Djjr62777 100% agree with Rick’s opinion on his video though; it can go either way depending on how handsy your game is
He won’t ever do that
@@Djjr62777 i just got a full set of maltby irons with midsized grips and im excited to use them
If Rick refuses to use something which improves his game (fatter grips), I can't reward him by supporting his channel(s). When you find something works, USE IT!
Takes a big man to upload a video like this, shows great strength of character, honesty about your game and humility. Anyone engaging with this video with anything apart from sympathy and understanding is a disgrace to both the game of golf and the values, ethics and morality humanity should stand for.
Calm down mate
Every upload makes him money, strength of character has little to do with it. He plays bad a lot and it's enjoyable content, uploading it is an absolute no brainer, no need to do so much boot licking
So if anyone has any emotion apart from sympathy and understanding is a disgrace to the game of golf. Wow, to the golfing Oracle we must listen 😂
That kilnerdyne dude has some rather serious mental issues. I hope he gets the support he needs.
Thanks for replying to this comment and boosting Rick's Audience engagement. See you in the next one!
Rick - "What's the worst that could happen?"
Water - "Let's play a game."
Hahah ouch
And sand😂
Tree branch, "hold my beer"
I love that the video starts with rick missing the green and his comment is “the green got smaller”🤣
Haha they were!! Honest 😂
I believe you! Still enjoyed the video! 👍
3rd hole drives it into trees then hits tree
Rick "double bogey out of nowhere 😂"
Wow Rick since you switched to the Cobra driver your driving has deteriorated I think you should go back to playing the Ping driver.
And that’s golf. When you go in with a pre-determined expectation of a score golf shows you who’s the boss.
When you have zero expectations and just flow you score your best round.
that 12th hole is why we all play golf Rick, total score aside, to get par on a tough 193 yd par 3 like that, be under a tree branch, then knock down long putt, brilliant! Well done Mr. Shiels
Your Driver is never on ‘a piece of string’😅😅 for those of us who’ve watched long enough. The Open qualifier for example
It is on a piece of string. Unfortunately it's usually tied to a tree...
@@Eat-MyGoal hahaha what is he talking about?? He’s always hitting out of the rough. First hole royal county down 😆
He is the most delusional golfer ever
The old question, how long is a piece of string?
Answer, usually a couple of fairways 😅
You have to love Rick. He understands his audience. People don't want to see lights out birdie golf. They want to see the famous last words, the calamities, the catastrophe's. Too many content golf creators either give the impression they retake poor shots or its not golf that the average golfer can relate to. If people want to see great golf, then they watch the professionals. Fair play to Rick. He seems to understand we can all do with a good laugh at a terrible pitch or tee shot. It's what we do every weekend.
Good comment. When he actually plays these other “better golfers” he competes
Yeah he's playing bad on purpose, deluded.
Payback Fridays round the Brabazon with Rick ❤️ make sure to visit Marston Lakes when you come back up for the Trilogy 🤣
That par on 12 by the way 🤣 GOLF 🤷🏼♂️
Love the positive mentality even when it’s not your day! Keep going Rick!
An old pro once told me... "Everyone hits bad shots. The trick is to not follow up a bad shot with a BAD DECISION." ;)
What I appreciate about Rick is his honesty. It shows just how hard the game is even for a pro!! Keep the content coming and know that we all appreciate everything you show us the good and bad!!
Thank you my friend!

honesty? cant even respond to the comment about the Titleist video being took down, PRO? r u Guy in disguise? (brown nose)
He makes it harder on himself. He’s good enough to layup and put a wedge close.

Maybe you need another Titleist Driver Fitting 😂
Acts shocked “A double bogey from nowhere”
Followed by another double 😂😂
I much prefer my doubles to come in brown, liquid form!! 😆
Last year? I'd sit down, all 126kg of me, with a beautiful chicken dhansak and a naan bread bigger than the earth itself from the best local takeaway in my town, and settle in for an evening watching you go through trials and tribulations, sometimes liking golf, sometimes hating it, as you tried desperately to break that magical 75. This year, sitting here, still a woolly mammoth at 111kg (but only been doing anything about it since June haha), but no curry in sight, watching you back at the Belfry, clearly - within the first few minutes - loving playing the game of golf. [Edit at 12mins: erm, yeah, about that...] It felt like you wanted that moment last year to be your turning point, a kind of 'oh crikey, I'm not on the best path here, let's change that around right now, get back to basics again and start from scratch'. I use my example to say, I know that feeling! And as much as it's a fantastic feeling to know you're improving every day, it's even more awesome to see someone else doing the same. Thanks for everything you do Rick!
And the most snoozefest of a comment goes to
I love watching Rick’s course vlogs. It makes me feel so much better about my game😂
10:31 - Rick sounds like he’s Going on a Bear Hunt!!
I thought exactly the same #parents! Terrible decision making…
😅
Watching this is exactly why we love golf. It is the definition of ‘love hate relationship’ that one perfect shot in the bunch of horrendous others keeps us coming back.
Play on! 💪🏽
Keep Smiling Rick, you’re amazing, no one can say any different - look at what you have done for Golf, for YT and for all of us smashing the like and watching every minute. I wish I was in your position, 17 over or level par. Doesn’t matter. ❤
A few months ago a bad round of Ricks would have been hard work to watch. Obviously has taken the feedback on board and even though the score wasn't great it was still fun to watch. Fair play Rick.
Thank you Shielsy for being real with us. This is just the video I needed right now, I have had some great highs to my game this year but recently some apocalypses even when I'm well practiced and feeling it going in. We've seen you play some awesome golf this year and it can even happen to you, helps me keep up hope and realize the game will come back.
Rick - "Let draw it off the crane into the fairway"
Crane - "annnnd... its gone"
Loving all the long tough courses. Would like to see Rick playing some shorted club courses or white tees
A brilliant video would be James being ricks caddie for a full 18 and seeing what ricks score would be. Im convinced ricks course management is the main thing which lets him down
The par on 12 might be the funniest and best par we’ve seen from Rick
Being real is what makes watching Rick so good. Don't edit to make it false. Brilliant.
Love a Friday watching Rick
Ooof, that top on 15 is SO relatable. Like a dagger in the heart just to see it. Good on yah for keeping it together and keeping it real!
"I promised myself I would NEVER do this!"
Did you put the Titleist fitting video back online????
Can't see it...
What is with the obsession of the titlest video? It is his channel, he deleted a video, end of the story.
@@victorchen8484 it's a running joke at the point. Stuff of legends.
One of the first useful lessons I learned from watching Rick Shiels videos was not to go for the "hero shot."
You cant convince me Ricks game isn't better with those jumbo M grips. It just takes away the left miss. That being said great job keeping your head on straight this round.
Kind of amazing this channels as big as it is and has been going for as long as it has and they still haven’t figured out how to get the mic to stop picking up Rick’s deep breathing
i live for that RS breath. in high end horse competition jumping they put microphone so you can hear the horse effort and it's amazing.
Yet again you fill your video with positive energy and you carry on displaying your golf game on a hard course which likes to bite you when you’re slightly off target hats off Rick 👍👍
his course management is something else.... but i love all his videos. RICK dont stop being you ever! loving these videos
Interesting to watch Shielsy have the same course management strategies as myself....(this is my second year playing) Love ya Rick!
A two way miss off the tee is like visiting a large knuckled proctologist, you can get through the experience but its painful. Keep swinging Rick.
Feel bad for you Rick! I must say though I have officially shot my first under 80 score this morning :) 78
Congratulations, I’m back at golf (last 2 years) after 12 years away. Got lessons and working hard at my swing. Never knew half the stuff I know now, anyway I’m hoping to shoot under 80 soon, I’m currently averaging 87 for 18.
Congratulations! Excellent day!
What a hole the 12th was.Keep going Rick- your round had everything that our golf has!
One of my favorite videos! Golf is hard and most people with negative comments would shoot much worse haha.
Love how genuine you are Ricky!
If you played for par ever hole you will naturally make some birdies but when you play for birdies every hold you get yourself into trouble and scores like this happen.
Rick on hole 1: "Keep disaster scores of the card"
Rick on hole 4: "Let's try to hit it through a tree"
You really are your own worst enemy 😉
I knew you were in trouble when you punched the flag on 2. You need to make some serious penitence to the Golfing Gods.
You motivate us all. We have all had tough days on the golf course. Makes me want to play more. Thank you 🎉
Seems odd a 10 HCP golfer would promise themselves to never hit over 80 again?
Rick this was a great video, love to see more video with tree lined fairways, this is a typical course I play.
Not sure how many of our comments Rick reads, I’m just a huge fan, and he’s mega successful and I watch all of his videos. I went back recently and watched his vid with Charly Hull. He was so much better with the Ping driver and the ER putter, especially on lag puts. And his recent hit channel review of the Mizuno Hot Metal irons was really good. There’s no shame in our game progression in playing golf with equipment aimed at where you are currently in your game. He only hit one fairway in this vid with the Cobra driver and the irons punished him considerably. I’d bet $$$ with the Ping driver, the ER putter and the Mizuno’s he would have played better here. Kind of hard to figure out here why he keeps using that driver that ever since he ditched the Ping has been uncontrollable. No troll here, just a fan. Golf is hard enough, why make it harder.
First video I’ve enjoyed for a while Rick, the good vibes are much more fun to watch! I know it’s hard to keep positive I struggle with it all the time. Yeah you didn’t play your best at times but still made an entertaining video and it looks a really tough course!
loving the new rick .. keeping happy and positive .. hes living the dream playing golf for a living and its nice to see that he remembers it when hes playing golf . long may it continue
Thanks Sir Shiels to share your bad round of golf! It's helps to give confidence, if a good player as you face the same issues as my usual golf round. Trees, pond, penalty drop, 3 puts...Merci 🙏 ❤
“Do I deserve to be this punished?”
Yes. Yes you do. Especially when you bottle using a driver and constantly putt off the green
Rick, you have to address your two-way miss off the tee. Nobody can score that way. Pick a shape and commit to grooving it. You can’t be standing on the tee thinking it could go either way … especially when you’re swinging the driver 110 mph. It’s brain poison.
I think Rick has been experiencing a lot of stress, of late. His voice is telling, a tad higher than normal. I think of the old adage, "Expectations lead to disappointments", as Rick is more focused on how the hole is supposed to end, like often wanting a birdie. We all like to think that way, but the only thing that matters is getting that club face to where it's supposed to be. A lot of golfers get way too far ahead of themselves, instead of focusing on their routine. Golf is a humbling game, especially when we have high expectations and the game's really not there, particularly the mental and emotional sides. Keep going, Rick!!
I agree, and I also feel like he is at a crossroads with content at the moment. There is no real direction to his content, its just him playing courses and trying to break a score with the occasional collab. Whereas other channels seem to have a focus on an outcome. It's hard to root for someone where there is no intended outcome. For me the break 75 episodes are dry and I find myself watching them less and less now. Maybe youtube golf has hit its plateau in general, I don't know.
keep up the good work! love watching the golf videos. time to get those jumbo grips on the main clubs lol!
The thing Rick doesn’t get enough credit for. Every video is a different course. If you’re playing your local over and over. Rick would shoot under par most rounds. You know every break on every green. You know where to position every tee shot. Rick is abit of a birdie machine in my book
Love the video Rick, we all have those days, cudos for still posting the video for some laughs!
Shot selection is mental 😂
I would love to see a round or two where Rick hits all stock shots. No rifling a 6 iron, muscling a 7 iron, ripping a 3 iron, just stock shots.
@@Chris54321hahah that terminology is spot on
The games been looking so good recently Rick - your head never went down here though and it makes for an excellent vid despite the frustrating score - shows your heads in a much better space - well played!
I loved this video 😂 Rick when you play and have fun you’re like rly funny. PLEASE HAVE FUN MORE
So it's not just me then.......and there's always tomorrow, as you rightly say. Loving the positive vibes, it makes for more engaging viewing. Thanks for posting (Rick & team), and for sharing all of your great content.
Rick’s golf is definitely trending well. Just a bad day at the office. The Brabazon is relentless.
Would be awesome to get an overlay of the club used for each stroke.
Rick, I enjoy your videos especially your "Break 75" series. In this case, if one were to offer an observation, I feel that you were "pressing" to get that good score (under 80) on a course of greater difficulty. Best to avoid trying to make the "hero" shot and more on course management: better shot selection to avoid trouble and get the par or occasional birdie. People watching this video could hear you exerting yourself on shots, a sign that you were out of your comfort zone. Dialing it back and making sensible shot selections would serve you better. Instead of searching for redemption on this particular course, keep expectations to just solid play. I sense that you want to make the video interesting but not at the expense of your game.
Who else knew 100% he was going in the water at 10? Lol, that green was crazy difficult. Very entertaining, Rick!
Consider doing a "what's in the Bag" you have access to so many different clubs. Where is the LAB putter you did so well with?
Put your ego aside and go back to the bigger grips. You hit better shots. You just have to get over the idea of needing 'jumbo' grips.
As bad as it sounds, really glad you've put this up. Had a stinker myself this week and could've chucked my bag in the lake, so I take solace in the fact its just one of those things that happens. Cheers for the content man as always.
I know I often mock Rick for his Drives right and Irons left but that looked like a tough course to break. Well done on the birdie on the last, well deserved!
Rick has some course management issues, no doubt. But he makes just enough good putts that i think he blinds himself to how poorly his greenside short game is. I didn't keep count, but i started noticing about halfway through that he was accumulating a lot of shots near the green that he didn't get up and down. And a couple that he actually DID get up and down, but had to have terrific putts to get it done. Without replaying and keeping count, i'd guess he was going at about a 10%-20% up-and-down rate during that round. If he gets that up to 50%-60%, and then doesn't do dumb stuff that costs him two penalty strokes, he's in the mid 70's on his off days (like he was today, obviously, and it happens to us all).
And to add to this, i don't think i've EVER seen so many putts that caught the lip during 18 holes that actually went in! It's usually the opposite (lip-outs all over the place). I know Rick didn't putt too well from distance, but overall i believe if he was on Arccos, the stats would show he had an incredibly great putting round here.
Tough round but what a course. Have you thought about a “Break 75” but you can’t use any woods? Would be interesting to see because amateurs do struggle with woods and in the desperation for length, I do wonder what us novices give up in accuracy. Love the channel. Thanks Rick, you’re a legend.
Great entertainment, I was literally crying with laughter on the 15th, brilliant!
Caddied for my pal who played in the English open there in 1982, good player but shot 82, 83 to obviously miss the cut. Needed 4 at 18 in 2nd round for 79 but actually nobbled one off the tee and took 8 for 83! I played off 4 at the time but remember thinking how bloody hard it looked!!
Rick must be applying for a job at Tim Hortons … making double-doubles.
"I'm just going to go for it, what's the worst that could happen?"
*Camera pans out to show the water*
Only just at the 2nd hole, even after a bogey , smile beaming ready to go and a birdie, Cmon Rick!
It is nice to see just Rick and his pull cart having a round I can relate too. I like all the break 70, or 50 videos, but nice to watch a video that feel more like a round I would play, thanks for keeping yourself humble @rickshilsgolf.
What everyone seems to forget is that the man plays from tees further back than what most of us would on these courses. Would love to see a break 75 from the shortest possible tees. At least just for a comparison.
Clean up those 3-4 footers extremely well!
Thanks for your great videos. It encourages me not to get down on myself and makes me see the positives in my play, even if it's just a nice walk on the course.
I have a theory. I think Him upstairs just looks down in between running the rest of the universe and decides it's time to press a golfer's buttons - "here Rick, take this tree hit, a top and run and now just add water!". Then sprinkle in a birdie just to titillate!😂😂
Rick,
Still enjoying the round even though you didn’t hit your best, because you didn’t lose your mind. Respect the effort to control your demeanor.
All The Best
Tom A
I knew the round was over the minute he smacked that flag on hole 2. Can't disrespect the course like that and expect to get away with it, especially with 16 holes to go
Hey Rick. Long time follower. Love your content. Happy to see you playing well. Keep on brother.
Rick, I love watching the videos, but with the massive warehouse of clubs you own, would you consider either an update about what you're using either in the video or in the description?
I play off 16 and had a 115 last weekend. Played the same course today and shot 85. We all have our bad days, but there are good days waiting just around the corner. And let's not forget; golf is hard!
Golf is the only game where your riding the lightning and then 15 minutes later your second guessing why you ever picked up a club 😅🙃
