    Need some of your famous shower curtains to keep the grinding dust off your other machines. “Nothing made too strong ever brakes” is the best quote ever thanks Tom. Thanks for sharing.

    I certainly don't need a surface grinder. But that doesn't mean I don't want one. Thanks so much for all this practical advice on bringing a used surface grinder into the fold!

    Nice and thanks Lee. You will enjoy using this machine, seems like yours is in excellent condition. I came across one last fall and couldn't pass it up. Did some TLC maintenance and had the table and z axis off the machine (took photos) - cable, lube lines, pump etc. held +- 1 tenth over the mag chuck regrind. Your gonna love yours. Mike

    Just a suggestion folks. If doing this use rated slings, hooks etc. Aim for a safety factor of 4 or 5 - for a 800 lb lift they need to be rated for 4,000 lbs if single, half that if doubled. Don't ever get in the 'gravity shadow'. Have a mobile phone on you if working alone. BobUK

    I wanted to take a moment and thank you for this video. I have a Covel 10PH surface grinder that had to be moved to AZ from VA. At 2400 lbs, it was going to be a job. The thing was I always wanted a Harig 612 so I bit the bullet and bought a beautiful machine and then had to load it into the trailer going to AZ (Along with the Bridgeport, Enco lathe, 2 drill presses and everything else). I followed your video to the letter to move this from the truck to the trailer without any problems. One difference is that my base has a Haring dust collector in it so it was a little heavier. I ordered the VFD you recommended and look forward to setting everything up in northern AZ. So again, thanks for this great video, and all the others you do. Looking for someone who wants a Covel.

    Lee I like your approach to over sizing the VFD. Later down the road you may want to use it on something larger. I would say that was $30 well invested in the future. I also always love looking at how clean and well painted your shop is. Thanks for displaying our flag as well.

    When I picked up my bench top grinder it was on a pallet and was loaded into my truck by a forklift. We put the block of wood between the spindle and the chuck. That prevented the table from moving in addition to stabilizing the spindle. Enjoy the new grinder.

    Very similar to my Boyer Schultz.
    I repurposed my original drum switches for on-off via the VFD. Nice walk-through on the VFD. I had a lot of angst until I did one. Now I see it as super simple and logical.

    Hello Lee, from Ipswich in Queensland Australia. You were a great help in explaining the earth on your VFD as I was at a loss as to where to put the 3 phase earth on my VFD... I will try again in the morning and see if I can have success. There are too many things to change in the setup and gets very confusing. I wish they had a basic default setting to use. Kind Regards, John

    lee my harig has a oil pump thats tied via the switch that oils the ways and the column, its in the back at the base behind a cover just above the resevoir. the sight glass at the top of the spinle column gets stained over time, if its brown its empty, if its black its full, the pump usually takes a min to get the oil to the top. basically turn the machine on and wait for the opil to circulate. mind you the spindle is permanently lubed but the ways are not and rely on the pump.
    if your bypassing the switch by direct connecting the motor then the pump is not running..
    they came in two flavors 110 and 220
    thats my understanding of them anyway....is this something you handled differently? if so how?

  • @sblack48
    @sblack48 2 года назад

    When you picked up the machine to move it down the highway did you do anything to protect the X ways from bumping up and down? I understand that they run on ball bearings and hardened ways so you can damage both when you hit bumps in the road.

    Congratulations on your new grinder. Nice addition to the shop. You're going to love it. One thing I am curious about, is the VFD, besides being a phase converter it must also be a 110v to 220 transformer, is that correct?

    • @MrPragmaticLee
      @MrPragmaticLee  6 лет назад

      Phillip Yannone that is correct. The input is 110 vac & the output is 220 vac 3 phase. Pure magic in that little box. 😀 The part number is in the video description.

      Irony, I just discovered your video after getting an almost identical harig 6-18 two days ago. I ‘m near Statesville NC. It came with a fixed capacitor style converter which looses one of the coils and therefore cuts hp by 1/3 or now a 220v 2/3 hp motor. Does the vfd give you full hp? I had to spend 134 bucks for a mobile base that could handle the 1350 lbs with magnet. I watch to learn. Thanks
      The information I am getting says I need 133 to 150 others say 300 % of the rated fla to have full hp at full speed, or double the price. Hope 2/3 hp is enough.

  • @rogboak

    What did you do about your oil pump? Did you just take the end off your cord and run it straight to your VFD or did you run the VFD to your spindle and your oil pump to a separate 220 source?

    Nice looking grinder Lee. I have the same one Harig Super Six, I think it was mfg. in early 50's. Wish mine had the fine adjustment, sure would make it easier and faster to use. I noticed the way you have yours oriented in relation to your mill, you might want to consider a shower curtain or something between your grinder and your mill. Mine has the same deflector on the end but it doesnt stop all the grinding dust.

    • @MrPragmaticLee
      @MrPragmaticLee  6 лет назад

      Sandia According to my serial number (9502), mine was manufactured in the latter part of '77. The paperwork that came with the machine has the final inspection report that is dated September 7, 1977. I do, in fact, already have a shower curtain between the mill & surface grinder. I originally installed it to keep the mist & chips from the mill away from the shelves that used to be where the SG is now. Thanks for stopping by.

      I'm second guessing the date on mine, I know I called some guy that works on them and sales parts and he gave me the date. I am going to check when I get back in my shop this afternoon.

      @MrPragmaticLee  6 лет назад

      Sandia A friend on Facebook put me in touch with a rep of Harig. I sent my serial # to him & he's the one that said "late '77”. After finding the dated Final Inspection Report with the serial number on it, I'm convinced he knew what he was talking about. The sn is on the very top of the machine. Mine was under 41 years of grease & grim. 😀

    • @19441978

      OK Lee, I was wrong. The serial number on mine is 13843, mfg. in 1981.

    You can usually connect the machines buttons to the vfd, and use them to control the vfd. I did this on my lathe and mill, so the green start button on the machine panel starts the motor, the stop button and emergency stop buttons both work as normal. If you do this, you can put the vfd out of the way, in the electrical cabinet on the machine for instance, somewhere dust, especially metallic dust won't get on it. Most electronic devices do not like it and it takes years off their lifespan.
    I hope to use a vfd like yours when i pick up a jones and shipman 540 surface grinder soon.

    • @MrPragmaticLee
      @MrPragmaticLee  6 лет назад

      ro eng The switch on my surface grinder makes/breaks all 3 phase legs and it has a 110v tap on it for the oil pump. I do plan through to move the VFD to a dust free environment with a remote switch. I had considered adding a speed potentiometer as well until I realized the oil pump was being fed by a leg of the 3 phase. If I want to vary the SG speed, I'll need to supply external power to the pump - no big deal, just a project for later. Thanks for stopping by.

    • @oneoffmotors4886
      @oneoffmotors4886 5 лет назад

      Could anyone draw a wiring diagram for having the oil pump hooked up correctly with the VFD? I bought the same VFD as you, because of this video. I must say that I am somewhat baffled as to how I'm going to make this oil pump work. Thank you so much for your videos! you have at least got me started on this VFD install. very informative, any more knowledge about the oil pump would be a blessing at this point! thanks Again Mr. Pragmatic Lee!!

    • @oneoffmotors4886
      @oneoffmotors4886 5 лет назад

      Kentuckyken, if you have any wiring diagrams that would help immensely! I have determined what I need to do to get the spindle ramped up, warmed up, and running, but I am baffled on how the oil pump circuit works. 'Fake' 3phase power from the VFD goes into the machine, but there must be some kind of stepdown transformer to operate the oil pump? I really wish I had a wiring diagram, and I really wish I could use the start/stop button on the Harig Super 612 as well as the VFD. Thank you gentleman, I hope I hear something soon!!
