As a Norwegian I am deeply disappointed with the Nobel peace price. They seem to just give it to people they like. Not people that actually work for peace. If there are no good candidates, no-one should get the price.
When people talk about or use emojis, I feel old and confused. My inner dialog, every time: "You damn whippersnappers with you fancy graphical images. Back in my day, we only had text to communicate our thoughts."
*hangs head in shame* Yeah sorry about that. I meant CGP Grey. Just cause there is a debate on his Wikipedia page on what order the descriptors should be in. Is he Podcaster first, RUclipsr second or vice versa? I mean, Grey uploads podcasts with greater frequency than videos. I'm curious if this being uploaded here first is a nod to that. Unless Brady does it....than my hypothesis goes out the window.
*Then From what I know, CGP does the editing and uploading of videos, so you're probably right, though I am unsure if he would care enough about it.. xD
For 140 to 280, they just switched from UTF-16 to UTF-8. Doubles length for many western languages without increasing it for eastern and doesn't change storage length. Twitter just finally discovered the inventors of UTF-8 weren't morons.
I work at a 150 year old news organization and I can tell you that very little thought goes into stuff like what you are talking about. Maybe some places are better at it than here but it is chaotic here most of the time. The fact anything actually works and gets done is almost amazing. If someone said something about and upsetting ad we would likely try and make a change as fast as possible but if no one said anything than no one would ever think about it. We are also in a time where a lot of news media is struggling to survive. And while news was always kind about selling ads (it was just less obvious) what revenue news organizations get from ads today is more important than ever to keep them going.
The ending of the podcast reminded me of when I'm ending a call with an old friend who I don't want to stop talking to: "Ok I'm really hanging up now..."
You can use loaned plurals (not: pluralia) for flair, which is fine as long as you don't fall for the claim that they're the correct forms. As soon as you use _emoji_ or _sushi_ or _cactus_ in an English sentence, it's an English word with an English pronunciation and accentuation, an English syllable structure, English semantics, taking an English syntax (e.g. an English article; also _cactus_ does not have a grammatical gender like its Latin and Greek equivalents) and of course an English morphology (cactus - cactuses). When you take _sushi_ as your plural, it's either (1) not actually a plural: a tray full of sushi, a bucket full of water; or (2) an analogy to a scheme *already existing in English* like _deer_ - _deer_ or _fish_ - _fish_ (this might work for _sushi_ but it's definitely incorrect for _tsunami_ and _Pokémon_ and whatnot); or (3) ungrammatical but used for flair. So it's ad hoc to say that there is no rule. The English plural ending _-s_ is always correct. I should add that this is not about language evolving. It's literally the case the moment you use a loanword in an English sentence. It's not like _emojis_ is ungrammatical for some time and then it suddenly or gradually becomes the correct plural. Daniel Scholten talks at length about this in his podcast (it's in German, sorry..): www.belleslettres.eu/content/deklination/genus-essen.php and www.belleslettres.eu/content/sprache/anglizismus.php
in a interview the ceo was asked about the inspiration for twitter. He said it was the user status on instant messenger. That short little header was better at communicating how a person was feeling at the moment then asking them in casual conversation. He said more of his interaction on instant messenger was influenced by that status than anything. He instinctively knew sending that short deliberate message was more than enough information.
Can we get a shout out to the video updates to this not as audio-friendly podcast. not that I don't like following along on the linked pages, but an editors timing shows another beauty
A key problem with the frog emoji - there's no set standard for what frog they're modelling the emoji after. You've got your average green frogs from the swamp mixed in with rainforest tree frogs. The variance in colour, head shape, eye shape, makes for very poor consistency.
On the note of using someone's video/photo etc. of an event most news organizations will reach out to the person it originates from and ask permission to use. But a lot of places will get some of their news from aggregates like Reuters, so if you see the same video/photo over and over again it is like the origin source is and aggregate. Which I would also assume asked permission to us the materials.
My dictionary, The Concise Oxford from some decades ago, states that there is a "spelling rule" in English that says foreign words are pluralized with "s". (Note the Oxford z there.) Given that the best authority for English is the full O.E.D., ...
U.K. Halloween is a negative feedback loop of being a disappointment so no one is excited so no one puts the effort in which leads to disappointment etc
The room is quiet, the orchestra is in the middle of the fifth movement, when suddenly, everything stop. Mumbles of ".. couldn't we do this after ..." is heard backstage. When suddenly, the screen falls, the power point is up, and the conductor announces in such a tone : "Have you ever needed a shave?". Boos are heard from the audience, the entire crowd proceeds to file out.
as a Dane (country that made Lego) I can attest that Brady is saying it more right, it's a combination of two words "leg" (to play, pronounced lai) and "godt" (well, pronounced got)
Modern Lego sets aren't made up of as many special pieces as you think they are, while there are many such pieces, they can be easily re purposed as other things. I don't think that there can be a Lego piece that is truly specialised for one specific purpose. I would recommend having a quick look at some custom creations that adult Lego fans build to see how many of the special parts can be put to good use outside of what was originally intended for them by the designers.
The fact that the news runs ads during any piece of news (as apposed to infotainment) is absurd. In the early days of television, the networks paid for the news hour with the ads played during the rest of the day. It was understood that the hour of news would be for informing the public as a public service. But not in the world today.
It should be possible to give it to a Corporation, but it should be really really rare: Once in a year across all the different disciplines would be too often.
Depends on the channel, but in my country we have a tv channel with no commercials at all, that is payed for by the government. And no it's not full of propaganda. It's mostly comedy, news, kids shows, entertainment programs, information shows(discovery channel ish, just more colloquial) some sports...
Emoji(s) are not for professional situations, Brady. They are EMOJI(S). They are supposed to get across their meaning in a silly, non-serious way, because they are used as replacement for actual words. The cuter, the less serious, the BETTER!
I agree with pretty much every point for the proposal that the Nobel prize should be awarded to institutions instead of individuals. But a part of my brain keeps making me wonder whether this means that it would end up being a prize always awarded to the wealthiest institutions that have the most money to spend on research, rather than being given to people or research teams that have done extraordinary work. On the other hand, isn't it already the case that to do the best and most innovative research you need a big bucks business making it rain $100 bills in your lab? It's unfortunate, but a lot of research has become either a PR platform for the funding organizations, or a quest to develop the next invention that can generate a lot of profit.
I think that if the tragedy is local, absolutely no ads. At that point, people will be turning on the news to find out what they nees to be doing. If the tragedy isn't local, run ads and cover it a little bit.
Emoji is a japanese word so it is Emoji it even has kanji 絵文字 (lit: picture word) we don't say samurais or sakes or more we shouldn't japanese words don't have plurals

i really appreciate the effort put into showing the emojis in the video when they are talked about

Grey's sudden innocent tangent into an Eggo commercial and Brady's lack of understanding of any of it killed me
'The only time we ever talk about crocodiles ... is whenever another tourist has been eaten.'
We in Finland really appreciate those long tweets
"Järjestelmällistyttämättömyydelläänsäkäänköhän" isn't even a compound word.
Google translate doesn't know what to make of that word...so do I...
Microsoft Translate says "The system of Unsystematic"
One might translate it as "perhaps due to him/her also not arranging the organizing of [something]"

Thanks for including the emoji images in that portion of the podcast- 'twas exponentially funnier with the visuals.
56:58 Never.... have I felt so connected to someone... as I felt connected to CGPGrey at this moment... love you guys!!
CGP Grave is better then RIP Grey IMO
F
It's been 5 years but I agree maxresdefault
I've come to not expect it, but I really like when the youtube video changes in relevant ways. Bonza.
Oh, ok. It gets uploaded to RUclips first.
Lol I kinda like it, wonder it's a subtle nod to him being a RUclipsr before being a podcaster?
Him? Them*

Lol. Well played *SgtAlex Green* I'm rushing my answers because I'm suppose to be working, not commenting on RUclips. XD
That ending was awesome x'D . Great podcast as always!

language evolves. It is emojis
also first ad ends at 34:42
the second ad ends at 1:01:03
the third ad ends at 1:54:20
and i like the end
what about emoja
Language evolves. It is emoji now.
ops your right. My bad. I was listening to it at work yesterday and I am constantly up and down. So I forgot about that one.
that aggressiveness was unnecessary, @bigfatcock
Jordan Le Your life is unnecessary.
Hehe, the Danes did LEGO instructions and the Swedes did IKEA instructions. Damned Scandinavians

Welcome to the "Too Many Special Bricks" bandwagon this ride has been running for at least 20 years glad you made it.
i love how they talk about emojis so seriously... i could listen to them talk about it all day 😂
but sushi is like sand.
It's always plural. You don't eat a sushi.
But there is a tsunami.
sushi isn't coarse or rough, and it certainly doesn't get everywhere.
But I don't eat sand?
“I don’t like the sand. It’s coarse and rough and irritating"
-Anakin Skywalker
Chocl well rice certanly does
Obviously you don't eat A sushi, who can stop at just one sushi? Such small morsel cannot be consumed in singular quantities.
Love the frequency of these podcasts
Can confirm. The Expanse is AMAZING. Just got to the third book, show watchers are in for quite a ride next season!
I like the mostly still images for the youtube version of the podcast. It drains less battery

Love that you show what you talk about in the video, keep it up!
'You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here.' That's all i could think of during that ending.
the google crocodile reminds me of schnappi
Haha
now i got that effing song stuck in my head. thanks a lot, Inez -.-
Ohh the images are in the video this time. I like it! Well now that you've done it once, I expect it to be done every time.
Oh boy, here we go again!
I dont know why, but this new ending made me tear up a bit. But I was smiling. Now I am confused but comforted. Thanks?
The old android ones are the best. Beauty in simplicity.
I'm American and I always called it lay-go. You're not alone Brady.
That ad is start up is ridiculous, hahaha 1:52:16

56:00 My exact feeling with Minecraft nowadays. The original few blocks were enough to build anything!
oh my, RIP grey is perfect. So is the podcast title, congrats Brady!
Liking, commenting & telling my friends just because I love the ending on this one. :D
of course the day after the podcat goes up grey uploads a new video
My dictionary, The Concise Oxford from some decades ago, states that there is a "spelling rule" in English that says foreign words are pluralized with "s". (Note the Oxford z there.) Given that the best authority for English is the full O.E.D., ...
Yeah, I plural is from Latin as well as some other plurals. Like the plural of stadium is technically stadia and the singular of data is datum.
ey I was just listening to you guys and then this popped up in my feed
neat!
I love how their solution for the Nobel Prize (in Physics) is to turn them all into the Nobel Prize in Literature.
... What's up with this episode? It wasn't announced anywhere but Patreon
VpzomTrrfrt I got a mailing list email, actually
Haha the twitter crocodile looks like a green dog!
You could probably make a plugin that automatically removes anything following "SPOILER ALERT:"
The ending was superb! :)
As a Dane, Brady's initial pronunciation of the word LEGO is far more correct than the british one.
uh dear.. an iPlural? Are Apple trying to own our words too?
U.K. Halloween is a negative feedback loop of being a disappointment so no one is excited so no one puts the effort in which leads to disappointment etc

How did I just realised that H.I stand for Hello internet...
Why is it always on RUclips before RSS feeds. You said yourself it was the worst way to listen. Why do you do this to us?
he said if they pass 100k then he'll upload to youtube first
It's pretty good if you have RUclips Red
I would if I could. Red is somehow still not available in the UK.
People listen to the podcast on RUclips because it's not on their podcast RSS feed when they get Patreon notification.
protoCJ it's only got 16 views at this point lol

that thumbnail is unnerving
So HI on RUclips has become a slideshow? :D
I'm weirded about by the ending
Other countries has commercials in the middle of the News?????
Vibe J wait, where are you that dosn't? Yes, the Americas have ads everywhere for most everything
Depends on the channel, but in my country we have a tv channel with no commercials at all, that is payed for by the government.

I am watching a lot of youtube but i almost never see any adds. I am watching from germany.
The Old google Turtle emoji, is adorable; why did they replace it.
the facebook emojis are fantastic, at least fb is good for something, and it's pretty emoji design
Emoji(s) are not for professional situations, Brady. They are EMOJI(S). They are supposed to get across their meaning in a silly, non-serious way, because they are used as replacement for actual words. The cuter, the less serious, the BETTER!
Messenger frog. IT'S A FROG WEEGIE
Years ago, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the plural of Elvis is Elvi, not Elvis'.
Mark S Just what is the 9th circuit court of appeals?
In Georgian the plural of emoji is ემოჯები (emojebi)

1:24:00 Casey Neistat publicly stated prior to demonetization that he was going to donate all of the money from the ads to the charity. :/
I wanted it to be called the big friendly rocket
I do like this ending

The rise of the proletariat is upon us! Lead on comrade Grey!
WHAT IS UP WITH THESE FREQUENT UPLOADS, I AM STILL NOT PREPARED FOR THIS!
Makkovar SPOILER ALERT - this episode is great
I see what you did there
🐊
I live in Las Vegas and I can that the #VEGASSTRONG is everywhere
The first thing I was concerned about with this whole rocket flight thing was pollution - how much fuel do you need for a 30 min flight to NY?
I like the Fallout reference.
Oh, 10 episodes left till episode 100? Knowing them, they will deliberately avoid talking about it at all on episode 99.😂
Did hello internet start the adpocalypse?
Another problem of giving the prize to an institution is: who are you going to invite to the ceremony?
Emoji is a japanese word so it is Emoji
it even has kanji 絵文字 (lit: picture word)
we don't say samurais
or sakes
or more we shouldn't
japanese words don't have plurals
also to follow up on my point. The reason Moose doesn't conjugate is because it is a loan word from a native language. Loan words aren't conjugated.
tsunamis though?
I get the e-mail, I check Overcast then nothing...
Raj Patel maybe it's got lost in the wind, wait for the next low pressure system.
singular of emoji is emojus
Pumpkin pressure is real in non-anglo countries. Companies try to push it and kids come begging for candy. I hope it doesn't catch on.
Anyone else play video games while listening to this?
LEGO is pronounced with a long E, but no ey. LÉGÒ short for LEG GODT
everyone else pronounces LEGO with a short E
then everyone else pronounces it wrong.
19:47 Comrade Grey?
CNN floods their airtime with probably double their ads during tragedy. This has always off-putting to me because it's clear they're cashing in on the extra viewership.
remember that news organization are the protector of truth or something but they are mainly about making money
I am one with the blob, the blob is with me. ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ The original google emoji are adorable.
