Hard to believe ...Grandpa was on a hospital ship ( 11-11-1918 ) coming back to the states after he both of his legs were blow full of holes 103 years ago. He made back to Missouri and farmed for another 55 years . I still have his unform, dough boy helmet and gas mask.

You will be surprised, these rifles are more popular now than ever. They used to be dirt cheap because everyone thought they were old junk. Now everyone thinks they are cool as fuck. I have 6 milsurps and every time I bring one out it turns heads. I own a m1917, and this particular rifle turns the most heads since many people have no clue what it is most of the time.

Thanks to all Veterans out there. I own a nice Remington M1917 and last June was able to take it out to 500 yards for the first time. My results weren't as good as yours because I had no dope for it. It was a 20 round steel silhouette match so 5 shots at 200, 300, 400, and 500. The 1917s are great rifles, but they don't have the following that the 1903 has. I wish I could find a new production military stock for mine because the current original stock is beat to hell. (It's 103 years old so what do you expect) Great video and keep them coming!

Fantastic video enjoyed it very much. I have the pleasure of owning a 1916 Eddystone P14. having been made as part of the British order its in .303 calibre. The British placed an order in the USA with three USA manufactures these were, Eddystone Remington Arms, Remington & Winchester. My P14 is not only a dream to shoot its also remains extremely accurate. During WWI from 1916 on, the P14 was the preferred rifle for British snipers, however the Winchester made ones were preferred for they were considered the most accurate.

Hi Rob i love the m1917, i now have a few of them my very first one was a Remington , the stock looks like it has been beating rocks all its life, it is known at my club as the ugly, but it shoots like a national match rifle, it has won many 250 yard 10 inch plate shoots, if i bring it to a shoot at my club people start whispering oh no the ugly is here, after the match, people will walk up and ask George can i please take a few shots with the ugly ill say ok take 3, after they shoot it, all you here is wow. i have parkinsons now but i still show up to the matches with the ugly and loan it out to a friend it still takes 1st 2nd or 3rd, they say it shoots like it has eyes, all i say yes it does, thanks Rob for your videos

Both of my Grandfathers went to France. One was in the Infantry and got gassed and wounded, the other was with an engineering unit ... both came home safe. Both of them were very short ... just over 5 foot tall and both were amazed with the length of the M1917. With the bayonet, it was taller than each of them. I have an Eddystone as well ... great shooter! I have a Scottish Terrier that I named after Gen. John J. Pershing, aka Black Jack! You are right about the military leadership at the time. The Russians REALLY got slammed ... and that shxthead Italian General Cadorna, my dog could have done a better job then him.

Excellent video! I must nitpick a little, though. The 1903 and 1917 were largely issued by division. The "regulars" in Divisions 1-6 were issued the 1903, along with the first few National Guard units to make it to the front. The remaining NG divisions and all of the conscript divisions were issued the M1917.
As a tangent from that, there were a few other rifles that US soldiers served with as well. Some of the first rail engineers sent over still had Krags. The African American units serving with the French had Berthiers and probably some Lebels. There was one division under British command issued the SMLE. US troops sent to Russia had the Mosin. There was also a single infantry regiment sent to the Italian Front, but I am unsure if they kept their rifles or switched to Carcanos. But anyway, now I'm just rambling...

I got to shoot the Eddystone (belonging to my dad's coworker) in High School, and my 03-A3 I bought from the Director of Civilian Marksmanship for ten bucks. The Eddystone had a bad reputation for the heat treatment of the receivers, and articles in Sports Afield would say the action tended to crack under continuous firing. Shooting it was still more comfortable than the Springfield, with far less felt recoil. God, I miss those days.

Just how robust was the M1917 rifle? Consider this fun historical fact: Today, they are still in use, here in the 21st century, by the elite Danish Sirius Sledge Patrol, whose duty it is to patrol the vast wilderness of Greenland, which is a protectorate of the nation/kingdom of Denmark. The patrol personnel - who are all members of the Danish Navy - are selected according to a very difficult and arduous process on par with the best special ops units in the world. Only the most-fit, intelligent and self-reliant men are selected, as they are expected to be able to function for weeks - even months - at a time with minimal or no human contact while on patrol, save from their sled dogs and their patrol partner. These men function as a combination of special ops soldier, medic, and park ranger. They are experts in wilderness survival, first aid, and have a law enforcement as well as military function.
Their sidearms are 10mm semi-auto pistols, Glocks if memory serves, and their rifles are vintage 30-06 M1917 Enfields. Their preferred polar bear medicine is M2 Ball AP. How cool is that - that the M1917 is still in use??

Love your videos. You are putting life into shooting history. You can synchronize faster with Ulla by saying “Shooter ready”, and she replies “Camera ready” or “Camera hold”.

I had a Winchester 1917 some years ago, but ended up selling it. The bore was a little dark, so it didn't shoot quite as well as the one you demonstrated in the video. Also, it had the common problem of a broken ejector (which is a common failure of the M1917). If I could find one in as good shape as the one you have, I would buy it.

@@VintageRiflesShootersClub Bummer. We have a 24" plate at 2,235 I tried to hit last year with it, but the wind was 20-40mph. Got within a few feet of it though...That's what we get for camping in the desert in February...

Pretty fancy shooting with open sights. I can no longer see targets that far without my scope. Nice job.

Hi Rob,thanks for another awesome video! Just a quick FYI for you: If you ever find yourself in the far-western suburbs of Chicago, consider visiting the "First Division Museum At Cantigny Park," located on the grounds of the former estate of Robert McCormick, the long-time publisher and editor of the Chicago Tribune. McCormick, who served in the 1st Infantry Division "The Big Red One," in the Great War, and rose to the rank of colonel, endowed the museum and it remains today at his old homestead. I've been and if you are at all interested in the history of the U.S. Army, the Great War, or anything like that - and I know you are! - it is well-worth the time. Cantigny Park is in the town of Wheaton, IL, by the way.
